Ryan gets mad

July
21

Yesterday, Jets WR David Clowney sent out a series of excited tweets.

“I swear Rex Ryan is the Realest Coach alive,” read the first.

Then right on its heels: “All my Teammates, if you haven’t already check your email NOW.”

Turns out the Jets coach didn’t like something he read about the Jets being picked to finish last in the league, and he emailed his players. Ryan used some pretty colorful language to express himself, and it fired up at least one backup wide receiver.

That’s just the kind of coach he is. Ryan leads with emotion, and he wants his players to bring that as well. It’s a contrast to the way Eric Mangini coached players like Clowney, and it seems a good way to remind these guys that vacation is about to be over and it’s time to get to work.

Kerry Rhodes loved the email, but said he didn’t need any extra motivation.

“We are motivated enough and that just validates to me how serious coach is and how it really is going to be with this new coach,” Rhodes said. “It’s not just a front at all!”

Also yesterday, Jets owner Woody Johnson told reporters at the Meadowlands ribbon-cutting that he wasn’t interested in quarterback Michael Vick. Players Jerricho Cotchery and Damien Woody were there as well.

“There is a lot to bringing Michael Vick aboard, especially in these economic times,” Woody told the AP. “You have sponsors and stuff like that, and you always have to take that into consideration.”

So Jets fans, you can count yourselves lucky on two fronts. One, Vick won’t turn the quarterback competition between Kellen Clemens and rookie Mark Sanchez into a quarterback circus. And the other?

Look at what Brett Favre is putting Minnesota fans through right now. I bet most of you are feeling pretty lucky you’re not sweating out the will he or won’t he right about now.

Yes Jane – VERY HAPPY we can concentrate on analyzing and rooting for our own guys. As a 29 yr old Jets fan – I am willing to wait for a franchise QB, because truth be told, it is very hard to win a Super Bowl without one.

While we are on the topic – I don’t get the argument that Sanchez only played one full season of college ball as a negative. He was awesome in that one season – how much better is he going to get than what he did last year in college? If he is that good with that little experience, imagine when he has 4 to 5 years of NFL experience under his hat.

Perhaps it’s Clowney’s other tweets that should be of more concern – particularly his comments last week that he hasn’t had more than 5 hours sleep in some time, even when practicing.

Amusingly when I criticised this apparent lack of professionalism he was a bit non-plussed, but if Rex Ryan were following Clowney’s twitter feed I’d guess he’d be unhappy.

Nice & a different technique too! He’s certainly on top of all things related to his team! I don’t recall him doing stuff like this, when he was with the Ravens. How could you not love this guy?

I love what Rex did by emailing his players. I think theywill all run througha brick wall for him.

Rex Ryan is now a head coach.Maybe he should start acting like one.Leading by emotion is long gone Jane! You must earn the respect of the players among you and the players. Not sending out tweets so the whole world can see what has been said.He is the last person you want on game day playing with emotion.Ryan shouldn’t care who picks who to win or not to win.He has a hell of a challenge in front of him and
I hope he can handle the ups and downs of a long season.By
the way I hope he didn’t drop his bottle while he was sending these tweets!!!!!!!!!!

I get the feeling that coach Ryan is full of himself. And I agree, leading by emotion is NOT good coaching. I think coach Ryan just needs to keep quite and let his football team do the talking this season. Earn the respect of the league.

If you don’t think emotion and fire gets the team to play harder, look at the way the lowely 49ers smacked around the the Jets last season. The Jets looked like the team with nothing to play for. Singletary was smacking his players and showing lots of enthusiasm. mangini had his classic “wanna be Bill” scowl on mug.

as fans we tend to think that professionals shouldn’t need to be motivated to play the game hard. this just isn’t the case with today’s players.

    Erik,

    Well said.

    Dan,

Are you still angry about Favre? Now, you’re taking it out on coach Ryan?...C’mon, get over it.

Angry at Favre? No way!At the end of last season I posted
here that Favre runs the show.He would retire and get a total release and probably end up in Minnisota.Favre’s world. As per coaching emotion is not by sending tweets to your players. If you think thats good, great.I think he is
just getting himself into hot water. If he gets mad about what
someone thinks is going to happen,I think he is in way over his head.I wish Rex the best and Go Jets Go.I might head over now to the Viking’s blog to see what is going on there!

Sorry Dan…..I think there was another big time Favre supporter last year named Dan.

  12. David

I find it ironic that a Favre fan could think emotion isn’t important. I think Favre is a pretty emotional guy and it played a big part in his successes and failures. It takes a combination of smarts and emotion to achieve the level of greatness we are wishing for.

We’ve seen the robotic approach and I’m happy to have some emotion back in the mix. Balancing emotion, discipline and knowledge will be the ultimate key. I’m hoping Rex can achieve that balance in the longhaul and I welcome his enthusiasm and fire in the short haul.
