Fladell fails physical

July
2

The Rutgers guard the Jets picked up off waivers from the Giants, Mike Fladell, failed his physical and will not be joining the team for training camp when it opens Jul 31 in Cortland.

I’ve been talking to a few of the players about what this time of year is like for them. Technically they are off, but new coach Rex Ryan gave them a lot of time between minicamp and the start of training camp, and players like Dustin Keller and Bart Scott are ramping up their training so that they arrive in terrific shape.

Imagine you have a month vacation but you’re working 8-hour days. That’s kind of what it’s like. More on that later.

One Response to “Fladell fails physical”

via Dustin Keller’s Twitter… apparently he’s the #11 ranked Tight End in fantasy right now! I think a few extra summer workouts are in order if he is to live up to that standard next year.

When I hear stories like the one Peter King mentioned last week about Roy Williams never having a workout regimen in Detroit, it just makes me scratch my head… these NFL players are already so susceptible to injury, and face such tough competition every week during the season that one would think extra preparation during the off-season/summer will undoubtedly pay dividends in one way or another—a higher level of individual (& team) success on the field, a lengthier career and larger contracts all come to mind as potential benefits. With all the resources these players have, it just makes you wonder what the heck they’re thinking sometimes…

In Roy Williams’s case, I’ll never understand why an off-season workout plan of SOME sort wasn’t a REQUIREMENT by the Lions. And personally, of course, he should have realized the upside to the extra work. With a training/lifting regimen, Williams would likely be a better football player—period.

It is great to hear guys like Keller & Scott are taking their time off seriously and using the time to properly prepare for camp. Any extra edge will be welcome this season as the AFC East appears to be shaping up to be an even stronger division than last year.
