Negotiations and picks

April
12

Leon Washington and his agent are still negotiating with the Jets for a bump in his contract. Going into his fourth year, Washington scored eight touchdowns last season (two caught) and between his running back and kick return duties was one of the top yardage getters in the AFC.

“If I can touch it 10 to 15 times, I’m going to try to score 10 to 15 times,” Washington said about getting the ball more.

He will reportedly be trying to get an extension worth $4 million a year. Between that and the contract holdout of Thomas Jones, are the Jets doing everything it can to bring back a running game that was one of the few reliable pieces on the field last season?

“We both want to get something done, and the Jets they have been expressive about wanting to get something done that’s a definite positive,” Washington said. “I don’t want to get into details but I believe things will work out for the best. Like I said, the Jets have done the right thing traditionally with Jerricho (Cotchery), Kerry Rhodes, with guys who have played well for the organization that  have done the right thing. I’m just looking for, all the things I saved up in the past, I wish I could make that withdrawal.”

Here’s an audio clip of Washington (above in an AP photo), where he talks about the negotiations and wanting to get back to Florida this season.

Jets general manager Mike Tannenbaum is concentrating on the draft right now, which is probably a good idea since the Jets don’t to take want another late bloomer like Vernon Gholston two straight years.

TE Dustin Keller (48 receptions for 535 yards and three TDs) was a good late first-round pick last season and CB Dwight Lowery (4th) had 64 tackles his rookie season, but WR Marcus Henry (6th), QB Erik Ainge (5th) and OT Nate Garner were quiet or absent.

    Dear Ms. McManus,
I still hold out a lot of hope for Dwight Lowery—even with all the CB ‘imports’...

Even for a ‘student of the game’, as Lowery has been revealed, the rook was hit by an awful lot in ‘08…the least of which was targeting by teams leery of the other guy (Darrelle).

    What ever happened to Garner…?

Resign both of those guys asap…...draft a receiver. easy. pay me to do the GM job.

Jane, Happy Holiday. Lowery will be just fine and he did match Revis’PD #’s i believe they were 16 which was excellent since he probably had a 3-1 ratio compared to Revis with passes thrown his way. But with all that said i do believe he will be see time at safety this year. Leon will get done you can take that to the bank. Ainge i will not give up on and might just turn out to be a nice backup. He played well vs the Eagles and i would like to see more of him this summer. Everybody is caught up in WR’s and DE’s but lets not forget they need to draft or sign a UFA punter to improve in that part of their game. Since defense and field position will be a great part of their success this year they must have a good punter.

Tannenbaum is once again putting his job on the line based upon the dealing (or lack thereof) of the QB position. He better hope that one of the young guys steps up and gets us past the wild card round.
