Jane McManus of The Journal News on the Jets.

(Jay Cutler)

So the Jets are holding an open locker today and the mood is pretty similar to the middle of training camp last season, when a very organized quarterback competition got much more interesting.

“I feel like I’m stuck in the Matrix or something, everything’s the same,” Damien Woody said.

Jay Cutler isn’t exactly Brett Favre, but he is on the trading block after some apparently contentious back and forth with Denver. Which is why it is odd that last night he told Fox’s Jay Glazer that he didn’t want to be traded. All of it has the makings of a good soap opera.

Both quarterback candidates Kellen Clemens and Brett Ratliff said they tried not to worry about what they can’t control. (Erik Ainge did not appear at his locker before the football class the players filed into, binders in hand.)

Clemens said he hadn’t spoken to Mike Tannenbaum or Rex Ryan about Cutler:

Ratliff said he doesn’t watch anything on TV that might be about the whole drama.

Darelle Revis said if you want another guy, get him, but do it quickly so he can become a real part of the team.

“The situation with Brett (Favre) was, he came late,” Revis said. “I think it was too much of high expectation when he came in, of us being a championship caliber team. If you have somebody coming in late, he don’t know the system as well, so if it was someone from the outside to come in he would have to be here and learning the system and in training camp… It needs to get done if that’s the choice. If not we need to focus on the guys here.”

Clemens said that would be great, but there is rarely a moment in football that doesn’t involve some kind of intrigue.

“You’d love to have that closure but then it’ll be something else,” Clemens said. “It’ll be the draft, are we going to trade up and get Sanchez or Stafford?”

Finally, LT D’Brickashaw Ferguson said he kind of liked thinking about the different possibilities of who might come in, but admitted it would be different if it were his own position that was being discussed.

You have to get Cutler at any cost. Two(2) #1s plus if necessary. Every year somebody comes available who could be a game changer and unless he is Mr. Perfect we always frown on it. Joey Porter, we dont want him!!! Randy Moss, we don’t want him!!! T.O. we dont want him!!!! However the other 3 teams, all in our Division jumped on them. Forget about the character issue because nobody else cares about that anymore. Win Baby Win at any cost. Even the Giants are willing to take another chance on Plex. I’m tired of losing. I didn’t want Favre because I felt he was too old and not in game shape when he came to the J*E*T*S. But if we can get Cutler I am all for it no matter what the cost. He is a top 10 QB and we really don’t have a clue as to what our 3 guys can do. Use your head not your heart on this one. Get Cutler

Alright Joe, for continuity, I’ll repeat mine also(with your gracious correction of my memory). It’s all good debate:

I am using my head, Joe. Getting him at any cost is exactly what scares me. Getting him at the right price might be one thing, but I guarantee you that whoever gets him is going to have to overpay for him in a big way. Ditka trading all his draft picks for Ricky Williams(thnx Joe) didn’t work out so well for him way back when and I doubt it would work out for us either. QB is an important position, but it’s still a team game and one guy alone won’t take us there, if it costs us three or four others in return. That’s what my head tells me ;)

I’d rather see them keep the picks, and let Clemens and Ratliff duke it ou. Remember, with a good enough defense you can win a Superbowl with Trent Dilfer!

It probably won’t happen. But it does liven up the J*E*T Blog

[...] Apparently, according to Jane McManus’ blog, Damien Woody thinks they just fixed a glitch. [...]
