The Favre Effect

March
31

When Jets general manager Mike Tannenbaum was asked if the one-year Brett Favre experiment could be termed a failure, he said no and added that the Jets would benefit from Favre’s presence on the roster for years to come.

At the time, the Jets were still in the wake of (get out your hankies) the Interception Era, five horrible games to end a season that had seemed destined for the playoffs. Tannenbaum’s words seemed like spin designed to put the best light on Favre’s tenure here.

With the passage of a few months however, and the Jets appearing to be seriously considering the in house candidates Brett Rattliff, Kellen Clemens and to a much lesser extent Erik Ainge, maybe there was something to what Tannenbaum said after all.

Each of the three quarterbacks contending to take his starting job say they got something out of Favre’s time in New York. Ainge said he’d always thought things came naturally to Favre, but hadn’t realized how hard he actually had to work to give off the easy-going appearance.

Ratliff said that the biggest thing he learned was how to have fun, and that Favre was, 17 years his senior, a bigger kid than the younger quarterback.

Clemens said he had spoken to Favre recently, as well as former Jets quarterback Chad Pennington. He said that being able to watch Favre last season is something that will make him a better quarterback.

“I’ve now had an opportunity to sit back and watch one the greatest to ever play the game last year go through everything that he had to go through,” Clemens said. “It was a very unique opportunity I tried to make the most of.”

[...] McManus (who is having runaway success with her Rangers blog) has some great audio clips from the team’s three QBs from the media day last [...]

  2. Alex

Cutler is available. I’m praying the jets don’t bite.

  3. David

Watch out for the words “due diligence”, Alex. This could start to get expensive…

  4. David

I just read Cimini speculating that, in addition to whatever else they would give up, David Harris would make good trade bait. That would be absolutely obscene to consider, because Harris and Scott together is one of the more appealing aspects of the year ahead. If they were to give up anything other than draft picks, it would be very hard for me to swallow.

  5. Alex

Ditto. I just watched the NFL Replay of the Jets vs. Cardinals last week, and memorably enjoyed watching Harris plant a running back on his ass. I want him on our team, rather than a QB who IS an ass.

To me, Cutler is like T.O., but with the rocket arm instead of the TD pass-catching ability. Translation: head case.

Once again there’s a “QB” conflict in the Jet camp???? Jeeezzee!!!

  7. joe b

Pro Bowl QBs do not become available very often. Our corp of QBs only threw about 10 passes all of last season. I would be very upset if we at least didn’t try to get him. Head case or not, he is very productive with a gun. And this J*E*T team is being built for now. Plus he will sell PSLs. But not mine!!!!!!!

  8. Alex

Remember, Joe, that head cases come with a price to pay. See what T.O. did for Philadelphia and Dallas. Not a whole lot, tho’ he too is a talented athlete and a pro-bowler.

You and I both know that what we think doesn’t matter to the Jets’ brass. We can maybe just agree to disagree and just see what happens over the next few days?

And I just thought: even if Cutler ends up with the Jets, who is he going to throw to? We need a receiver out of the draft, don’t we? Our #17 pick is gone if Cutler joins the team.

Comparing Cutler to T.O. is downright crazy. Cutler is acting like a baby, but c’mon, T.O!.....That being said, I don’t know about getting rid of the cornerstones of our defense for him….....At least it leads to some interesting conversation for once.

In all honesty, I would be surprised if the Jets decide not to pursue him.

  10. Bob

    Let’s go get Cutler baby.
Who else is going to run this team? Kellen Klemens?
he’s going to sell about negative 10 PSL’s.

now all we need is a wide receiver

  11. Alex

    Erik,

A head case is a head case. He’s beyond crybaby status. Maybe he’s not a top marquee head case like T.O., but he’s weird enough where I don’t want to see him on the team. He’s a trash-talking asshole.

    Not so crazy.

And Clemens will get the job done. Fans know so little about him that they can’t even spell his name right, yet they are ready to throw the second-round pick on the scrap heap. Too bad.

  12. David

Cutler has three years under his belt and his stats show a good, but not yet great QB. He certainly hasn’t established himself as a winning QB, yet. He’s had three years in the driver’s seat, so how long does it take for a great prospect to show he will be a great QB? He might yet be a great QB, but he hasn’t shown himself to be any more of lock coming into a brand new sytem, then the guys who have been in the system.

If you think this team is built to win now, then it might be better to work with the guys who can hit the ground running at full speed…whatever speed that might be. We really won’t know until we see.

This is so much like last year, when my gut screamed know. I don’t want to be right about that two years in a row.

  13. Colour1

JANE wake up!!! I just read on Yahoo sports that Jay Cutler is on Rex most wanted list!!! over 400 comments and it only 7am???? Sattle up guys and gals this ride is about to begin!!

  14. David

Hold on to your hats…the sign on the door says “gone fishin’” and Tanny is off diving for toilet trout.

  15. David

by the way…my gut may know, but it screams no ;)

  16. Alex

    David,

Your self-correction just put a smile on my face on this foggy upstate morning! My gut is shouting the same thing, as if you couldn’t tell.

  17. joe b

You have to get Cutler at any cost. Two(2) #1s plus if necessary. Every year somebody comes available who could be a game changer and unless he is Mr. Perfect we always frown on it. Joey Porter, we dont want him!!! Randy Moss, we don’t want him!!! T.O. we dont want him!!!! However the other 3 teams, all in our Division jumped on them. Forget about the character issue because nobody else cares about that anymore. Win Baby Win at any cost. Even the Giants are willing to take another chance on Plex. I’m tired of losing. I didn’t want Favre because I felt he was too old and not in game shape when he came to the J*E*T*S. But if we can get Cutler I am all for it no matter what the cost. He is a top 10 QB and we really don’t have a clue as to what our 3 guys can do. Use your head not your heart on this one. Get Cutler

  18. David

I am using my head, Joe. Getting him at any cost is exactly what scares me. Getting him at the right price might be one thing, but I guarantee you that whoever gets him is going to have to overpay for him in a big way. Ditka trading all his draft picks for Herschel Walker didn’t work out so well for him way back when and I doubt it would work out for us either. QB is an important position, but it’s still a team game and one guy alone won’t take us there, if it costs us three or four others in return. That’s what my head tells me ;)

  19. joe b

David..Ditka traded all his picks for Ricky Williams. Remember the dreads!!!

  20. David

Ha…thanks, Joe. You are absolutely right…my mind is going fuzzy on me.

  21. Colour1

To late!!! Bears got him!! to bad too!! wasted talent there with a running team???
