Jane McManus of The Journal News on the Jets.

Updated: It’s official

Jets GM Mike Tannenbaum was on the call and Bart Scott is signed, and they are close on re-signing Brandon Moore… Did I hear that right? Yes… Moore will be the Jets new right guard.

To paraphrase Tannenbaum, some times you know when people leave they might not come back, but other times you’re cautiously optimistic you’ll see them back. Apparently that’s how they feel about Moore.

With Scott, the terms are six years and $48 million for the 28-year-old linebacker. Of those dollars, $27 million are in the first three years and $22 are guaranteed. Scott wanted to return to Jets coach Rex Ryan, who was Scott’s defensive coordinator in Baltimore. When things got tense this afternoon, Ryan, Scott and defensive coordinator Mike Pettine went shopping at Short Hills mall.

“I’m hoping to get a discount now that I’m mentioning it,” Ryan joked.

If the deal had taken longer, they were going to watch an ultimate fighting DVD.

By the way on Scott, his agent Harold Lewis is a native of Rockland County and used to deliver The Journal News.

Tannenbaum wouldn’t comment on the interest in a trade for Lito Sheppard with the Eagles.

He would say he was excited to see what David Clowney can do this season. “David’s a personal favorite of mine,” Tannenbaum said. “He’s earned the opportunity for more playing time.”

I asked if the Jets D would be Baltimore North and Ryan said, “I think it will in production.”

Update: On the delay between agreeing to terms in the morning and not finalizing the Scott deal until late this afternoon, Lewis said the only holdup was a locked-door meeting he had on behalf of another client, Jason Brown, who went from the Ravens to the Rams today.

Lewis said they did not take the offer back to the Ravens to drive the price up, and at no point was Scott looking to walk away from the deal. Scott wanted to be a Jet to be close to the New York media market with an eye toward his post-football career, and a family visit two weeks ago convinced him the New York area was a place they could call home.

And lastly, the time stamp issue was fixed on the 5:36 post. So I’m accurate until we spring forward.

    OK that’s great,now if the Ranger’s get Sean Avery….

    David,

We can give our stomach-acid-scorched throats a rest now. Things are starting to look pretty good. Let’s see what else is in store; there’s a lot going on.

  3. ACDAVIDDC

Jets just got Lito Sheppard from Eagles

  4. David

They were making us sweat there, Alex. Getting Moore back at guard is a huge relief. I reverse my earlier declaration that Tannenbaum was supreme moron of the football universe and attribute it all to a case of temporary insanity.

Don’t give up on Tannenbaum being the supreme moron just yet…..it’s early in the process still. WE NEED A LEGIT #1 RECEIVER.

  6. Alex

And who is going to replace Baker? I just can’t figure out why the Jets treated Baker with such disrespect in recent years. Did he throw up on Woody’s shoes or something? (sorry to revisit the puke theme again)

  7. David

He must have, Alex. I never really understood that either. I thought Baker was pretty clutch. Anyway, it’s nice to hear that Coach Tannebaum thinks Clowney has earned more playing time in the upcoming season.

  8. Alex

Am I right in remembering that Clowney’s first-ever regular-season catch was a spectacular one-handed spearing of a poorly-thrown pass? I remember that catch as impressive, but it’s even more impressive if it truly was his first official catch. He makes a great catch and then, more or less, gets benched for the remainder of the season: am I remembering right?

I hope Jane’s asleep right now; she has MORE than earned it!

  9. Alex

    Jane,

Regarding the poll on the right-hand side of the page, can we adjust it so that it has a tight-end category? Linebacker is a done deal now.

You can tell that I’m still unhappy about losing Baker!

Why are people talking about David Clowney like he is an All-Pro WR#17 He has one catch to his career and if Mike Tannebaum thought he had earned more playing time, why didn’t he get it last season. Apparently Chauncey Stuckey beat him out for a spot on the roster. I expect the J*E*T*S to select a WR with the 1st or 2nd round pick. How many players have we seen have great preseasons and not start a regular season game. Brett Ratliff led the NFL in passer rating in the preseason and didn’t see the field. Clowney may be a good option when they go empty backfield. But I don’t know if he can start in the NFL. GB drafted him and let him go. The J*E*T*S actually released him and he went unclaimed. Too too much emphases is being put on him. I agree he made a great catch during this past season and it had nothing to do with his speed. But that is all he has done in his career. Here are his numbers:
    WRHeight: 6’0”
    Weight: 188 lbs
    Age: 23
    Years in NFL: 1
    College: Virginia Tech

Adam Schecter has just reported that the NE Patriots have traded Matt Cassell to the Chiefs

  12. Jane McManus

I hear your point on Clowney, Joe, but with him I think it’s more an issue of potential. He was active only once, and made a spectacular catch in one of the few offensive sets he played. If he can convert an opportunity like that once, who knows what else he can do.

He is not a No. 1 receiver by any stretch, but I’d like to see more of him.

Tannenbaum said if he hadn’t broken the collarbone in the preseason he’d have seen more time. Maybe gotten that touchdown pass from Favre he’d been wanting since being drafted by Green Bay.

    There, my 2c.

  13. David

Clowney is a speed burner with a good set of hands and that’s why there is reason to be excited about him. Name the last one of those we had (and I don’t even want to hear about Santana Moss)? The Jets have had some good looking receivers in training camp the last couple of years and I don’t think it’s fair to count them out, until they get a chance to spend some time on the field in the regular season. By all means, we should be on the lookout for new receiving talent, but I don’t think the existing corps is as bad as everybody seems to think.

  14. Erik Sec.309

As Jane said, Clowney is not a #1. Don’t me wrong, I like him, but we absolutely need a tall, #1 option. We haven’t had one since Keyshawn…...Can Golston play receiver?
