Coles will be a free agent

Laveranues Coles will be a free agent this time tomorrow night. The Jets will save the $6 million hit on the salary cap this season, and Coles, 31, will try to better his compensation on the free market. There is still a chance that the wide receiver could be with the Jets this season if he doesn’t like the options in free agency and wants to renegotiate with the Jets.
“I have had the pleasure of getting to know Laveranues since he entered the league in 2000,” Jets GM Mike Tannenbaum said. “He is a fierce competitor, a great teammate and a good friend who has always given his best to the New York Jets. I spoke with him today and expressed my appreciation for his contributions both on and off the field. This move will allow Laveranues to explore his options, and we both agreed to keep the lines of communication open.”
From the Jets PR department come these stats:
631 career receptions (tied for 41st all time in NFL history with Raymond Berry) for 8,095 yards (70th all-time) and 44 touchdowns. In 2008, Coles finished with 70 receptions for 850 yards and seven touchdowns.
Those are the facts. It probably explains why Tannenbaum hasn’t been rushing to get WR David Clowney cozy (even though Clowney won’t have the option to test the market unless he is released.) Coles didn’t exactly seem happy with the Jets this year. When long-time friend Chad Pennington went to Miami, Coles refused to speak publically for a month. His chemistry with Brett Favre never seemed to fully develop. Perhaps this is a good move for both, particularly if they can keep it amicable.

This is a smart deal for the Jets. Coles is a warrior, but with the wear and tear he has taken, I would be surprised to see him command an excessive amount on the free agent market. He still might wind up back with the Jets, but if he’s not, then more power to him and better for the Jets that they aren’t the ones to do the overpaying.
JANE…What is the latest on Brandon Moore. Also who will be our Kicker. It looks as if Ryan is cleaning house. We now have Smith, Cotchery, Stuckey and Keller as the only receivers with any experience. We have Jones, Washington and Chattman as our RBs. And Clemens, Ratliff and Ainge at QB. I don’t think this offense strikes fear into anybody. There are a few QBS WRs and DBs who have been released or FAs that may help. I don’t think we can go into the draft and find a immediate fix for these positions. I also don’t think Clowney is the savior everybody thinks he is. By this time next week we may have a clearer picture as to where we stand. It is now time to spend.
Joe, if the Jets release Moore today, as writers continue to speculate, it will prove that the famous Jet curse must run much deeper than anyone could have possibly imagined. I will be beside myself with disgust as never before, because none of it adds up in any way shape or form. God I hope all the writers have this wrong.
Cimini is reporting that the Jets have relased Moore. One can only begin to wonder what kind of stupid pills Tanny has been popping for breakfast. They must be some kind of lead based Chinese multi-vitamins. I hereby annoint Tannenbaum supreme moron of the football universe, until he pulls a major rabbit out of his ass…er hat.
How could he be so unfathomably blind? How much does that guy get paid to make these kinds of mistakes? I’m going to go be sick now.
The Jets are banking on Stucki taking Coles place…..Time to get a tall, stud receiver…...Not that confident about the release of Moore.
How sad that David has to invoke lead-based humor with some regularity. He’s always funny-and always right. Moore was a keeper. Releasing him was a sick move indeed. A sick-inducing move, too. What color is your bucket?!
