Sutton stays as Ryan sets staff

Rex Ryan is getting his staff together, and the Jets made some changes official. Former defensive coordinator Bob Sutton will remain
part of the Jets staff, at defensive assistant for linebackers. Other adds are wide receivers coach Henry Ellard, running backs coach Anthony Lynn, assistant secondary coach Doug Plank and secondary coach Dennis Thurman.
That means Jimmy Raye is out as running backs coach, and he is being interviewed by San Francisco. Even though Eric Mangini didn’t let us within a country mile of Raye, the players had a lot of respect for him.
So, to recap, Brian Schottenheimer will remain offensive coordinator, former Baltimore defensive assistant Mike Pettine is now defensive coordinator and Mike Westhoff remains on special teams. Although Kevin O’Dea officially held the special teams title even after Westhoff returned last year, I wouldn’t expect him to return.
How do you like your staff?
Schotty should have a lot of sway here, considering he is the strongest holdover from last year and the fact that Rex Ryan is a defensive guy. The Jets must see something that many of the fans haven’t. The adjustments in game were a real problem for the offense, but interceptions can drive a stake through the best schemes. And Mangini (another defensive guy) really controlled all three phases. This year should reveal how much the botched calls were a function of the former head coach.

It looks like a good mix of new and old. I don’t mind Sutton as a linebacker coach, I just couldn’t stand him as defensive coordinator. Then again, maybe he was partly victimized by Mangini’s meddling. I guess we will find out about that on the offensive side of the ball this year.
Jane,
Nice point to close your entry. Whether Mangini should have been the one receiving the criticisms piled on his coordinators is something I’m looking forward to discovering.
Why is shotty here? By allowing him to stay, Woody et al, are suggesting that the offense was not a problem.
How can they even consider that?
The question is what the offense will be? Will it be Favre running amuck, or will it be Kellen Klemens handign the ball to T. jones and little energizer(Leon) all game.
Shotty should have been shown the door. Why is Sutton here?
Did the linebackers do great things under his tuteledge?(sp??)
What a confused, nonsensical bunch of re-hires.
Wipe the slate clean!!!!! Let Rex bring in his own guys
silly.
They should have cleaned house. Schotty and Sutton sucked. If they couldnt get the head coach to believe in their gameplan, they dont deserve to remain on staff. They are weak.
The only weak link is Shotty. Sutton is linebackers coach – ha!
Sutton was always respected as a linebackers coach and I think his work there has been supported by the linebacking play, during the time he was in that cappacity. His problems began when they moved him up the food chain. He’ll be fine as an LB coach. I’m not going to break my back defending Schotty. His record speaks for itself…I’m just hoping that things will be different under a new watch and there are benefits to maintaining continuity in the system with the players they have. It’s the gameday decision making that has to change.
capacity….I really do know how to spell.
JANE…I guess the only important position missing now is a QB coach. I think most people were happy with the choice of Ryan as HC. However there are now complaints about the choices he has made about some assistants. Out of all the asst. coaches available at the time I thought he was probably the best choice. However I still stick to my boots that they should have hired a former head coach. Only time will tell. With that said I am signing off until the F/A signing period starts. I think you did a fabulous job after taking over this blog. I was a little uneasy with choice at first, but you made me a believer. See you in a couple of weeks
