The Oracle of Hattiesburg speaks

January
8

ESPN’s Ed Werder pinned Brett Favre down as he gets away from football in Mississippi. Favre says he’s got another three to four weeks before the quarterback decides if he’s retiring, and there won’t be another farewell presser when/if he decides to retire again.

“I’m an emotional guy, and I’m sure people are tired of seeing me get emotional,” he said. “People would probably say, ‘Oh, here he goes again.’ I think it would just be better for me to just thank the Jets, and I sincerely mean that. It was well worth what I invested. But I’m going to just quietly step away if that’s what happens.”

  1. frustration maximized

Every year Chad was healthy for the Jets, they got to the Play-offs.
The one year Brett comes to the team. With a far better group of team mates,
    Brett can’t do it.

    Turn the freakin page!

  2. Ann D

Brett wasn’t healthy this year and with as many hits as he took, if Chad was the qb he would have been out for most of the year. You can just blame the qb but this was a total team collaspe. Brett had a part in the collapse but he wasn’t the only problem. The biggest problem on this team was the coaching and play calling.

  3. Dan

We seen what Chad has done when he finally gets to playoffs. Thanks but no thanks.

  4. David

It’s all moot, at this point. Let nature take it’s course. If I had a king’s ransom, I be willing to bet that Brett won’t be back with the Jets next year anyway.

  5. Ann D

I wouldn’t be too quick to bet on retirement. Brett sounds like he always does at the end of a rough season. He was battered and hit more than any other year in his career and hurt most of the season but once he is healed and rested, his decision could go either way.

  6. bob

There are plenty of reasons to have Brett Back next year..
    Kellon Clemens, Brett RAtliff…David Carr..
    Matt Lienert.

If the options are to go with unproven no name back ups, then I guess we should stick with the guy who can at least sell jersey’s. We should then hire Marty Shottenheimer as coach, get jerry Rice to play Wide Receiver, and ask if Tony Dorsett is available… It would be a great all star team from the 80’s

  7. Alex

Clemens is good and he’s ready. Let’s give him a chance. No one would have had good stats throwing from behind last year’s thoroughly offensive offensive line. And recall that McCareins dropped a number of important passes, including TDs.

  8. bob

    Hmmm.
    Offensive line..offensive?
    Alan Faneca – Pro Bowl
    Nick Mangold – Pro Bowl
Damian Woody – Free Agent all-pro
    D’Brick Ferguson? – 1st round draft pick

    yep – they’re terrible.
    Could it be the…um COACHING?

But then again, they had to protect one of the most immobile geriatrics to ever play QB.

How is it that they created so many holes for Jones? but were so poor at protecting Brett Star?

  9. David

I hear what you’re saying, Ann, but those prior years were an awful lot different than this one. Coming back to an organization that is going through a coaching overhaul, at this stage, just seems very unlikely to me. I wouldn’t be completely shocked, but I wouldn’t be inclined to bet on it….

    Bob,

By “last year’s” line I meant 2007’s line. They were terrible, as I’m sure you’ll recall. And McCareins had hands of stone, no matter who threw him the ball, but he victimized Clemens most memorably. I do keep forgetting that “last year’s line” now means 2008’s. They were, of course, much better than 2007’s, but Clemens has never had a chance to throw from behind the pro-bowlers you cite.

Let Clemens have a real chance to lead this team.

  11. Bob

Clemens is the Browning Nagle of his age..of COURSE he deserves a chance to prove how bad he is.
If only there were minor leagues, imagine how easy it would be? If Clemens couldn’t get passed double A football?
Clemens set records at Oregon as a soph. He then got worse as a junior, hen broke his anke as a senior…..therefore, he has had 1 year of success, and that was 7 years ago. Against Buffalo last year, Chad was pulled, Clemens put in. He proceeded to throw 2 back to back INT’s.

    WE NEED HIM!!!!

  12. Erik Sec.309

How does antone know that Clemens will be a bust if he works with the 1st unit in the Summer and has an improved line in front of him? Plus it is curious that this line could run block much better that they could pass protect, but next year they should be much better.

  13. Alex

    Bob,

No one could have done well behind the line that the Jets fielded that year, so such comparisons are unfair. Given the stats you provide, Bob, I can see why you’re pessimistic, as most of us here are most of the time about almost everything Jets related. But Erik makes my point exactly. Give Clemens a REAL chance. He’s a smart guy who works and studies hard and whose time, in my opinion, has come. You can’t argue about arm strength. Also, his record at Oregon may not have been stellar, but check out Flacco’s record prior to this year—only one winning season, and that was in high-school, I think I heard. Seriously.

  14. Bob

    Alex,
Sorry to correct you, but Flacco was very efficient in his senior year:

The 2007 season proved to be his most successful. Flacco led his team to an 8-3 regular season record while compiling over 3,300 yards, 18 touchdowns and only 5 interceptions. He was considered one of college footballs most accurate passers in 2007. Arguably his best game came against Division 1-A Navy where he threw for 434 yards and four touchdowns. Flacco showed another solid performance in the first-ever meeting against the Delaware State University Hornets in the first round of the playoffs. Behind Cuff’s record-setting day, Flacco threw efficiently for 189 yards and a touchdown, leading the Blue Hens to an easy 44-7 victory. Flacco continued UD’s playoff run by upsetting the Northern Iowa Panthers 39-27 in the FCS quarterfinals and upsetting the Southern Illinois Salukis 20-17 the next weekend in the semifinals. Flacco threw for over 200 yards and 2 touchdowns against both the Panthers and Salukis,[1] but went on to lose in the championship game to the Appalachian State University Mountaineers 49-21.

  15. Erik Sec.309

We simply don’t know enough about Clemens to dismiss him. Maybe Vernon Golston can throw as well.

  16. Alex

    Bob,

I must have mis-heard or misinterpreted what the announcers said about Flacco today. They said that this was only his second winning season at any level in his career. At least that’s what I THOUGHT they said!

Sorry if I misrepresented what they said. Was his senior year perhaps the year to which they were referring?
