Coach search in turmoil?

January
6

Jets owner Woody Johnson met with Brian Schottenheimer and will meet with Bill Callahan tomorrow to complete their interview process. On Thursday, Johnson and GM Mike Tannenbaum will fly to Arizona to meet with Cards assistant Russ Grimm. Schottenheimer would be a very difficult sell to Jets fans given his youth and inexperience. But there’s a bigger picture question here, what the heck is the overarching philosophy of the coaching search?

Prospective (and very long shot) candidate Bill Cowher said on WFAN today that he never got a call from Tannenbaum or Johnson. Really? A day after firing head coach Eric Mangini, no one was at the wheel? Turns out the owner was out of the country. The Jets say he was very involved in all that was going on, but then pick up the phone and call Cowher. Firing Mangini without a plan is one thing, but then go full-court press when you see a guy you like.

Add to that the crazy drama fest that is the possible interview of Boston College coach Jeff Jagodzinski. The Jets won’t say whether they are hiring him because his AD has threatened to fire him if he talks to the Jets. He doesn’t appear to be a frontrunner, which makes you wonder why Jagodzinski would risk it.

No word yet on Brian Billick, and Rex Ryan hasn’t been officially scheduled yet.

  1. frustration maximized

This group is reminding me of the Dolan clan, and the way the Knicks coaching job is handled.

Complete lack of understanding of how to build a franchise….LETS GO GET MARBURY, he’ll sell jersey’s…

    still waiting..

Maybe the Jets can dump some salary and wait for Lebron james to decide to play football?

    Billick.

Coach search in turmoil is not the question. The question is does the reporters really know anything more than the average fan.He said she said close to team source is not
good reporting it is fiction. On this blog on December 30
it was reported that Cowher will talk to Jets then on December 31 it was reported Cowher back out as being interested in coaching Jets. Now six days later it is reported that Cowher was never even called by Jets.90% percent of all sports reporters reports are made up between reporters to make a story for the day and to fill space
and get fans talking for nothing. After saying all this it
sounds likes Erik and joe b kind of job….

The Jets had agreed to a meeting through Cowher’s agent, and released that information. But then Cowher called it off later that night. Both stories were true at the time they were reported.

These stories are hard to report because so much is based on innuendo and rumor. And what is true at one moment—like Cowher—is not true 10 minutes later.

Jane I thank you for your reply. This is why fans like Josey and myself who have followed Brett’s entire career will
stand up and defend him as if he was family. The articles that come out are so bad at times. To put down a player that has given so much to hurricane, medical, and to so many different projects to make the world a better place not to mention his career as a football player in which he never
would put blame on any teammate in his long career. The reports that have come out to make him look like a selfish
son of a bitch that has no personal relatinship with his teammates is the exact opposite what Favre stands for.
It is terrible to be able to tarnish a players whole career
in a couple of made up reports.Brett is far away of becoming a saint but I’ve haven’t wasted twenty years of watching a career of a idiot,I may have wasted twenty years
of watching and cheering a great football player. It will be something I will never regret.

    Dan,
Now that is a well thought out, well written post.

    Bravo my friend.

    Dan,

If you have a problem with the way the NY media has dealt with your hero, then just leave the blog. All true fans of the team are sick of you fake one year fans. You know what, If I had known that your secret man crush was going to bring people like you to the stadium, the blogs, and the airwaves, I would’ve wanted him to stay retired.

Do you realize how pathetic it is for an adult to worship one person as much as you and your posse worship Favre? Seriously, I would bet that you have books, posters, jerseys, and fatheads of #4 all over your house. You guys sound like stalkers. Brett would most likely run for the hills if he ever met one of you.

We the real fans are very aware that this franchise has sucked for years. While you say this year was such an improvement, in the long run, it meant nothing.

When it comes down to it, a combination of bad coaching, poor defense, and awful decisions by the QB led to the demise of this team. The Favre era in NY is most likely over. JET FANS are prepared to move on without him.

What will you do when Favre actually retires? What will you do with yourself?

    Leave this blog.

  8. Dan

    Erik

A Jet fan you may be.A pain in the ass is more accurate.
To you I may sound pathetic, but to me to stand up for any player who has played within the rules and played the game
at a level where so few have is easy and I believe I owe it to the game I’ve enjoyed my entire life.I may be a fool but I am sure Erik when you were born the doctor smacked your mother….......

  9. Alex

Yeesh! And now mothers are being brought into the conversation? New low threshold.

  10. David

Alex, I’m intrigued by the Billick possibility now also.

It concerns me that the Jets are seriously entertaining the notion of Brian Schottenheimer as head coach. I’m longing for an offense with some kind of identity. I like variety, but Schottenheimer crosses the line into Schizophrenic.

Please get off the Bill Cowher bandwagon. He was not going to coach in 2009. Cowher has said this several times. It didn’t matter that Johnson was out of the country. If Johnson was at the interview, Cowher would have met with him and told him in person, “no thanks” just like he did in Cleveland. Out of respect for the owner he would have met them in person to say no. He wasn’t going to coach so move on. I don’t see the search in turmoil, what I see is the jets trying to talk to as many candidates as possible to make sure they don’t overlook a possible good candidate.
As far as Brett goes, I know the qb always gets more blame and more of the glory but the over the top articles are ridiculous. This team fell apart. The whole team. It didn’t matter what happened in the Miami game, they weren’t going to the playoffs. Best quote so far I’ve read was from Kerry Rhodes who when asked if he wanted Brett back answered, ” of course who wouldn’t. You should also be
asking Brett Does he want us back?” The whole team performed badly the last 5 games, you can’t put the collaspe on one person. Had the defense been able to stop someone and the rb been able to run, Brett wouldn’t have felt so desperarate to make a play.

  12. Erik Sec.309

    Dan,

I thought only us Jet fan sank to the low forms of cheap shots (ask Josey – she said it). Dude – you’re not even a Packer fan, you’re a Brett fan. PATHETIC.

I’m sure your 2 dads are very proud of you.

  13. Erik Sec.309

Joe was right…There will be no more responses to Brett fans. This is a football blog. I will only respond to people that are fans of actual teams.

  14. Erik Sec.309

Ann – You realize we had the leading rusher in the AFC don’t you? It’s not that the rb couldn’t run (we actually averaged almost 5 yds./carry against Seattle and S.F.), the coaches, for some unknown reason decided to abandon the run. They changed the personality of the team. They should have seen that the O-line were better run blockers than pass blockers and that the QB refused to ever throw it away. Instead, they changed the identity of the team and the receivers, and especially the QB weren’t up to the task.

  15. Erik Sec.309

Sorry to ramble, but I forgot one thing. Ann stated that Rhodes said the he wanted Brett back, but she missed the most important part of what he said. He stated something to the fact that he should only come back if he is really committed and does mini-camp and summer camp. I think Rhodes made a really valid point.

  16. IRA

    Jane,

This whole Cowher story is wierd. If Cowher reallt wanted to comeback and coach the Jets would have reached out to him. Why waste everybodys time? I still think it comes down to Schotty or Ryan. I just have a bad feel about Spags. Is he a product of the talent he has? I guess we will find out.

  17. Ann D

Brett missed training camp and ota’s because he hadn’t been traded yet. If he doesn’t retire, he’ll be there. As far as Jones running for 5yds per carry against seattle, I agree with you. the coaches abandoned the running game which I didn’t understand because your qb was hurt. the game plans the jets had were the worst I’d ever seen with the exception of the NE game and the Titans game. After those games the plans were horrible. There were some sporatic drives that were good but not whole games. Look at the buffalo game. the opening drive was brilliant. The 2nd drive started out good and then the pass that bounced off LC’s hands and foot for an int. After that the jets couldn’t adjust and seemed out of sync. What happened. Did Mangini panic as was suggested here? did his panic filter down to the offensive coaches. It would seem it did with the lack of adjustments the jets were able to make and the lack of any cohesive game plan. My point is that no one did their job well after the titans game. Not the players, not the coaches. When your team isn’t ready to play and can’t execute and can’t adjust, there is a serious coaching problem. Too much talent on this team for it to have fallen apart this way.

  18. Ann D

one more observation- even though I don’t think the jets should have abandoned the run, I understand why they did. Our defense couldn’t stop anyone. they made seneca wallace and sean hill look like hall of fame qb’s. When you play from behind and the defense can’t get off the field teams will abandon the run. Although jones had 5yds per carry in seattle, he couldn’t convert on 3down when he had the opportunity. I’m not knocking Jones, just like I’m not knocking Favre, the whole team needs to take responsibility along with the coaches

  19. Erik Sec.309

They abdonded the run when they were only down 10 – 3 to Seattle. Seattle kept muffing opportunities. The Jets weren’t out of it until real late in the 4th. There is no way you leave the only thing that was working…..But that is the past. Let us look toward the future.

  20. Ann D

    Erik
The qb would have been up to the task had he not been constantly sacked or hit and had the receivers been able to get even a step on the defense. Please give me one receiver that can adjust to a throw. Jones ran well at times and at other times didn’t just like Favre threw well at times and at other times didn’t. Part of that was he was hurt, part was the lack of protection. You seem to just want to put all the blame on the Qb rather than on the whole team which is were it should be.

  21. Ann D

    Erik
As I said the game plans were the worst I’d ever seen. That is what worries me about Shotty getting the HC job. Were the game plans and play calling him or did mangini influence it? If it were him, it would be scary to have shotty as head coach. Why couldn’t the offense adjust to what the defenses were doing in the 2nd half of games. Again was this shotty or mangine?

  22. Erik Sec.309

Both – Mangini had the final call on all schemes/play calls.

  23. Erik Sec.309

Ann – It’s hard to adjust to the ball when it is thrown directly at a defender or into double or triple coverage. I’ve already said it’s not all his fault, but let’s not say that it was just due to the line and his injury that he stunk down the stretch. He made some awful decisions…...That being said, I agree with you that we need another receiver. Ideally we need a faster guy with some height to him.

  24. Ann D

    Erik
I agree with you. Brett made some bad throws. He will do that when he feels he has to make a play and everyone is not playing well. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn’t. My point was that Brett shouldn’t get all the blame. The interceptions are not the reason the jets didn’t make the playoffs. This was a total team collaspe. I really believe the coaching had a bigger part in the collaspe than any of the players. The coaches should have been able to design some routes to help out the receivers. It appeared that they were all double covered all the time while the opposing offense seemed to have all their receivers wide open all the time. At the very least call a balanced game plan. There were times when I could guess what the next play was going to be. Never a good sign when fans can guess the next play.

  25. Erik Sec.309

good point about the game planning. No one is solely blaming the QB.
