What went wrong?

January
4

Now that the season is in the books, the coaching search is on the front burner. We have an update on that at the end of this post. But first, trying to diagnose the patient that was the 2008 Jets.

Sirius NFL Radio Jets reporter Lisa Zimmerman did some reporting in the wake of Eric Mangini’s firing, and several players and two high-placed Jets staffers told her that after the loss to the Denver Broncos, Mangini panicked.

She reported on air that Mangini tore up the defensive schemes that the team had been using and installed a new set that defensive players weren’t comfortable with. Despite objecting, the players were told they were to learn the new system.

Several pointed to problems in the secondary given the way the Jets rotated defensive backs with S Kerry Rhodes and CB Darrelle Revis. The communication problems, she reported, extended to the offense and even within the coaching staff itself.

The unsuccessful tinkering and internal problems would explain why Mangini was fired immediately after the loss to Miami, when Brett Favre’s interceptions seemed a large part of the problem.

On the coaching front, a reporter the NFL Network is saying that former Ravens Brian Billick will interview with the Jets this week. In a story that could have an impact on the Jets coaching staff, Mike Shanahan told the NFL Network he will coach again. Bill Cowher told the CBS audience for the wild card pregame show that he was going to stay with the network for the final year of his contract.

For those of you scoring at home…
Bill Callahan—in
Brian Schottenheimer—in
Steve Spagnuolo—in
Rex Ryan—TBA
Russ Grimm—not yet official
Jeff Jagodzinski —neither confirmed nor denied to protect recruiting interests
Brian Billick—NFL Network source says this week

Lastly: For all those who thought the Favre vs. Chad Pennington battle was settled the last day of the regular season, Pennington’s four interceptions muddied the water a lot.

Billick would be a very good choice. He is a former HEAD (not a off/def coordinator) Coach. He has won a SB. He has an ego and is a strict coach who is supposed to be a QB Guru. Outside of Weeb and Parcells all our other coaches have been asst/coordinators coaches. Only one had a winning record (Al Grog 9-7) who quit after 1 season. We need somebody who knows how to lead. Billick is a proven leader. Not someone who is going to learn on the fly. Spag is a great def/coordinator. But he has a great defensive team too. People will say look a the 3 first year coaches in the playoffs Atl, Miami, Balt. All 3 took over 4th place teams that played a last place schedule. Just like Manginis’ first year. Lets see what they do next year when they play a playoff schedule. Billick will be a wise choice.

  2. bob

I’d take Billick, but can favre coexist?

is he a 3-4 type of coach?

  3. Erik Sec.309

The only thing Favre needs to co-exist with is his couch and remote control in Hattiesberg, MS. I think his comments really make it clear that he’s not coming back – at least not to the Jets.

  4. Dan

That was some game today for Chad? Some things never change!

  5. jonathan Swift

And what was Brett Favre doing while Chad was playing a play-off game? probably skinning a squirrel that he shot in Mississippi, hhhmmmm a little garlic….tasty.

My favorite piece of Billick history is this snipit from wikipedia:
Prior to reaching the playoffs, Billick forbade his players from using either the term “playoffs” or the term “Super Bowl,” with the idea of keeping them focused on winning each game instead of on their more distant prize. Billick felt this approach would help them reach that prize, and went so far as to fine Tony Siragusa for violating this rule. In response, the players borrowed the term “Festivus” from the television series Seinfeld for the playoffs, and the term Festivus Maximus for the Super Bowl.

  6. joe b

WOW with those 4 ints chad actually threw half the amount Brett threw, and in one extra game. And actually Brett has thrown more ints than anyone else in football. He is the only player in NFL history with more than 300 ints. Dan DA DA DA

  7. Erik Sec.309

Chad had a better year than Brett – everyone knows this. That being said, the Jets wouldn’t have done any better with Chad. They still have the same stinkin’ playbook with the same stinkin’ coaches as they had in the past.

Brett is most likely eating catfish and grits in the “dirty south. The Jet franchise and us (the fans), have to move on.

  8. Dan

    joe b

I did tell you what the out come would be.You said no no Chad doesn’t give up the ball.Sometimes joe it is better to
listen to people that know the game.Today Chad threw his longest TD pass in his career only problem it was to the wrong team!It doesn’t matter he is not a Jet.Eight years here the brass had seen enough.

  9. joe b

Dan.. I can accept it, Chad had a bad game. I think we all accept it.So what! Get over it. Do you know the Brett holds the record for the most playoff losses and the most playoff ints. The most career ints. 29 in one season. Where have you been since Jan 1. I missed you and you feeble comments. Chad stunk today OK. Brett would not have done any better against Baltimores defense. And I said I didn’t expect them to win. Now put on your cheesehead and relax. Hope to hear from you real soon. Please comment.

  10. Josey

Eric, Joe & Jonathan you three are the ones who cannot let go of Favre. You brought him up yet again in a thread that has absolutely nothing to do with Brett. Taking cheap shots at his hometown and sterotyping those who live in Mississippi is tacky, immature and low. You guys must live a very shallow life if at the end of today, the only intelligent thing you can come up with here are potshots at Brett Favre. Whatever will you do once he is retired?

I feel for the next QB for the Jets if he doesn’t perform up to your expectations. Let’s wait and see if he can have a better WINNING record for you than you had this season.

The fact that Chad had such a horrific day with his 4 INT’s and multiple sacks gives you 3 nothing to sing his praises about, so you stoop to a level of bashing Brett Favre.

Now I suppose you could argue ( in fact one of you geniuses did) that while Chad was stinking up the field today, Brett was at home. Well, so were many, many, many other QB’s. So I guess that little dig at Brett fell flat.

Perhaps Brett would or wouldn’t have done better today. But the fact is, Brett wasn’t the one on National t.v. showing how it shouldn’t be done. Also, his title of Come Back Player of the Year was a bit premature, hmm?

  11. Josey

“Dan.. I can accept it, Chad had a bad game. I think we all accept it.So what! Get over it. Do you know the Brett holds the record for the most playoff losses and the most playoff ints.”

Joe b, let me throw your words back at you. Brett Favre had a bad game against Miami. I think we all accept it. So what! Get over it.

And what was Chad & the Jets doing when Brett was playing in all of those playoff games? Sitting at home. As far as those INT’s, well yeah that is the beauty of Brett. Take the Great with the Bad. But like one said on here – At least Brett & the Packers were IN playoff games, SuperBowls ( 1-1) and winning his 3x MVP.

So along with his INT record, look at all of his other Records he holds. I don’t see a SuperBowl ring or appearance on too many Jets. How many Playoff games has Chad ( or the Jets for that matter ) played in?

So if you want to put his INT record under the microscope and continue to beat that horse, then you better be prepared to have respect for all of his other records in the NFL as well.

    ~josey

  12. Josey

Forgive me for posting three times in a row here, but I would like to add that I wasn’t going to comment on Chad’s horrible game & 4 INT’s.

I came on here last night and thought about it, but then I thought I would let it go, as I figure you all know how bad he did.

Then I see where those few of you who cannot seem to move on from tearing Brett apart, even when he hasn’t played this weekend and most likely is on his way out. So I guess I felt the need to defend my QB as much as you like to defend yours.

    Peace,
    josey

  13. matt frm manhattan

Rex Ryan makes the most sense… he has a strong record with the Baltimore defense… a 3-4 that fits the Jets talent… maintained top 6 in the league each year even when the offense was dreadful and their record was bad.

  14. Alex

What’s the down side for Billick? He has a big ego, but the NY (NJ) stage is big enough for it. I agree with Joe B about the upside. So what problems does he present?

If any one out there is seriously opposed to Billick, please let me know what reservations you have.

He seems like a good fit to me.

  15. Dorothy

We can debate all the offseason on who the coach should be. To me it’s just like the President…who cares..it’s who you elect to congress that matters. So that being said. no matter who the head coach is..let’s see who he brings in to be the assistants….the teachers. To me the head coach is the organizer, the decision maker during the game and meets with the media….does he really know the plays or names of the schemes? The assistants are actually the ones that make or break the team. So that being said..why are they interviewing Jets assistants. Whoever the coach is…I’d like to see Mariucci come back as Offensive Coordinator/QB coach…great teacher.

  16. IRA

    Jane,

The Billick name is now interesting. I think that it will be either him or Brian Schottenheimer. As for a QB how about McNabb?

  17. RickyB

Cy Young has the most losses of any pitcher in history. So? Brettt Favre is an all-time god of football. He’s also done, and his experiment at the Jets has failed. We move on.

  18. Dan

Prior to the first game.If we were asked if a 9-7 season
would be satasfactory for Jets fans, with a new QB learning a
new offense and new players.I would say 90% of us would of said yes.Now that mark has been achieved many fans blame
the season as a failure due to one player.Any other QB would be given a green light for 2009 with this record. So why not keep and move forward with what we have?

  19. joe b

Josey and Dorothy…Nothing was said about Brett until Dans’( who last posted on Jan 1) remark about Chad. Don’t blame the Jet fans, blame Dan. He’s the one that can’t let it go. And the remarks were directed at him. Not the two of you. And if you think these O/D coordinators are the answer. Look at some of the past can’t miss guys. Romeo Crennell, Marinelli, Mangini, Herm the worm, and in college Charlie Weisse of Notre Dame. Last year he was a hot prospect. Would you want any of them coaching yout team. Get someone with head coaching experience.

  20. sumo71

“Billick would be a very good choice. He is a former HEAD (not a off/def coordinator) Coach.”

he was an assistant with the vikings before going to baltimore

  21. Dan

I think MVP should be selected just prior to SupeBowl game.
    SuperBowl MVP is fine.

  22. joe b

Danny Boy..I didn’t say the dolphins would win on Sunday like you stated here is my comment..joe b
    December 31st, 2008 at 8:27 pm
Dan.. You are full of s*%t. Copy and paste one of my comments praising Favre or knocking Chad and I will never post again. If you can’t than you stay off for good. Is that a deal? I don’t expect the Dolphins to win this weekend. But they won last weekend. You are a real prognosticater. Everybody in sports is picking the Ravens. Do we have a deal?

Because you dont look at a season as a whole, you look at it from week to week to see whether the team is heading in the right direction or not. Having an 8-3 record and finishing 9-7 is terrible/awful/pathetic/unacceptable. Only looking at records and trying to draw conclusions from that prevent you from seeing what is wrong with the team.

heck, according to his record, Herm Edwards was a great coach. In reality, he sucked.

  24. Jason W

    Jane:

You really surprised that something negative about Mangini came out? After the beating the Jets have taken recently, they needed to do whatever it takes to stop making Mangini look like the victim and place a bunch of blame on him.

Its sad people dont see through this pathetic attempt at taking the fire off the Jets FO and absent owner Woody.

One question you can ask Woody: If the Jets were hosting a playoff game this past weekend, would Woody have canceled his vacation plans?

  25. joe b

Sumo71. You are right he was an asst. coach at one time. Everybody starts as an asst coach. But very few have success. The Jets have hired 12 hot prospect ass.t coach. All have flopped. Maybe it’s time to hire a former head coach. Who would you like them to hire? Do you know how many hot prospect coaches have come & gone in the past 5 or 6 years.

  26. Dan

    Jason W

Do you honestly believe Mangini is a great coach?
The decisions he made in the last two years have been piss poor.He called many game decisions as if we had a great great defense. Our defense was so so at best.In the home stretch it was evident thet the entire team was lost. How can you change your defense play book deep into the season
when you are still in the drivers seat of taking first place in your division. In this day and age of football you must have passion with your players.Shaking ones head as your team comes off field to me is not passion. His leadership skills are lacking and many deisions were just outright foolish.

  27. Frustration mounting

I hope Mangini gets the job in Cleveland, and he goes 12-4
just to show Woody that he has absolutely no idea what he’s doing, and neither does tannenbaum

  28. Ann D

This was a different team after the titans game. I’ve said all along that something happened in the Denver game to cause the collaspe. While I agree that Brett did not play well in the last 5 games, neither did anyone else. you can’t put the way this team played only on Brett. The rb didn’t run, the receivers didn’t catch, the db’s didn’t cover and the tackles didn’t tackle. the problem seemed to be that not only couldn’t the receivers get any separation but the coaches never adjusted to anything the opposing defenses were doing to help out the receivers. On top of that they never adjusted to Brett’s injury, they just kept throwing down the field. Brett could have just handed the ball off to jones, (who only ran for 23yds in the last game) and he wouldn’t have had the int’s but the jets still would have lost. The problem on the jets was not just brett played badly down the stretch.

  29. Jason W

    Dan:

Did I say anywhere Mangini was a good coach or didnt deserve to get fired? Nope.

  30. Dan

    Jason W

You did not. I misread your blog.I at times have bad eyes
    and a big mouth.

  31. Erik Sec.309

    Josey,

Wow…you are clueless. I was responding to a question of whether or not Favre could co-exist with Bilick. Yeah I was making a joke. I’m trying to make light of the entire Favre sitaution and add some humor to it.

Your right, I must have a shallow life. You on the other hand must have such a rich life. You are obsessed with a man to level that equals 13 year olds to the Jonas Brothers. Your blind adoration for this man is pathetic and quite crazy. I bet if you ever got within 100 feet of Brett you would collapse into wild convulsions.

You and the other Brett (not Jet)fans, should blog somewhere else. Try the Favre fan club, which most likely you are the President of. This is a Jet fan sight. We are fans of the entire team – not just Favre.

  32. Dan

    Erik Sec.309

Your blog”We are fans of the entire team-not just Favre.
Farve must be the only plyer on this team cause he is the only player you put down.

  33. Erik Sec.309

    Dan,

You must be the V.P. of his fan club. Please pack up your snow plow and move back to Green Bay.

If you actually read blogs throughout the season, you would know that I have spoken about many of the players and coaches. I have even stated at nauseum that the collapse wasn’t just his fault, but he played a major role in it. I just feel that I must respond when people act as if Favre can do no wrong.

    Multiple – Choice Question:

If Dan were to meet Brett Favre, what would be his most likely reaction?

    A) He would collapse on the ground and convulse next to Josey.
    B) He would try to jump on Favre, but end up being knocked out by his idol and arrested for stalking.
    C) He would jump around and scream like he used to do at all of the Back Street Boy concerts.
    D) All of the above are equally likely.

  34. Dan

I’m glad to be a Brett Favre fan win or loose. It just great
to hear fans like Josey admit Brett’s mistakes but will stand up for him during tough times. He has earned this respect and he will get this respect from his many many fans.

  35. Dan

I really think Josey and I are used to being on the winning
side with Brett, that its hard to become negative all the time like many Jets fans.GO JETS GO

  36. joe b

Dan. What was your thinking on Brett when he threw the Int against the Giants last year. “Way to go Brett. I still love you. You just made me proud. You are still my IDOL!!!!!

  37. Dan

Terrible is how I felt, then common sense set in and I was
proud of the Packers for making it a great season.

  38. Erik Sec.309

Brett, blah, blah, blah….......next subject please. Dan, I thought I told you to leave the Jet blog.

  39. Dan

    Erik

If I ever want to be stupid I would like to be like you.
    Dumb Bastard

  40. Erik Sec.309

    Dan,

Great Comeback….By the way, the answer to the multiple choice question was D. Now go back to the Packer site. See you later smart guy. – Dumb Bastard
