Jones calls out Favre, and more

A few things for a snowy day.
Bill Callahan and Brian Schottenheimer are slated to interview for Eric Mangini’s former job on Friday, and Steve Spagnuolo is coming in Saturday. Bill Cowher is out, and some outlets are reporting that’s because Woody Johnson insists on having quarterback Brett Favre back if he decides to come back.
However, the Jets are willing to negotiate on Favre depending on what a new coach wants. Last night, a Jets spokesperson said negotiations never got that far with the former Steelers coach.
Notably absent from the interview schedule right now, fired coach Mike Shanahan, Jets defensive coordinator Bob Sutton and popular special teams coach Mike Westhoff.
On to running back Thomas Jones. Mr Cee on Hot 97 got a better, more honest reponse out of Jones than anything extracted in the Jets locker room. Jones said the three interceptions against Miami—and Favre’s interceptions in general—were a game-killer.
“When someone’s not playing well, you come out of the game,” Jones said.
He also said that the interceptions made players “pissed off.”
To be fair, Jones didn’t have a great game against Miami with 10 carries for 23 yards. But he did set a bunch of records for the Jets with 15 touchdowns and led the AFC in rushing this season.
And he has a fair point. Favre’s interceptions undermined the effort of every player on that team. But Mangini and staff never took Favre out of the game for cause. No matter what the decisions were made by the quarterback, even when he fell on his own shoulder trying to tackle after the first interception last Sunday, Kellen Clemens warmed up briefly before halftime but Favre started the third quarter.
Lastly, get out the tissues, Jets fans. The AP just named Chad Pennington comeback player of the year. And Patriots draft pick Jerod Mayo defensive player of the year. The linebacker was taken three spots after the Jets picked Vernon Gholston.
Update 3:12 p.m.: Oh, and Justin Miller KR, now with the Raiders, was one of the AFC’s players of the month for December.

Jane McManus

Wow, I believe that’s twice in three years for Chad getting comeback player of the year. I wonder if that’s ever happened before.
Unfortunately the season is over along with all our hopes an expectations. Mangini is gone and Favre should not be far behind. Most fans fell for the Favre HYPE and gave him a free ride for most of the season. Always saying things like he was not in game shape yet or didn’t have time to absorb the playbook. Management should have taken that into consideration before they made the trade that will cost us a #3 pick in the draft. Now TJ states that the players were peeved at all the INTs. Usually after an int you would see the QB and WR discussing what went wrong. In this case Brett was always by himself. You never saw any of the players talking to him about what went wrong or what to do next. If the Jets bring him back it will be like Vinnies last season, to old and too slow. On Favres long passes down field after game 3 or 4 there was no zip and most of them were thrown after he scrambled out of the pocket and the DBs were downfield waiting for the pick. I think if the Jets don’t feel that Clemens is the answer they should try to trade for someone like Carson Palmer, Derek Anderson or Matt Leinart. There are only about 12 or 13 real QBs in this league anyway. So lets sit back relax watch the playoff and signing of our new Coach and get ready for the DRAFT and Next Season. “SPEND WOODY SPEND”
Its crazy to for anyone to blame the collaspe of this team on one player. Yes Favre played badly the last 5 games but so did the rest of the team. The DB’s couldn’t cover anyone, the dline couldn’t tackle, the oline couldn’t block, the rb couldn’t run and the receivers couldn’t catch. If the receivers had gotten any separation at all on any of his passes, there wouldn’t have been all those int’s. The fact that Brett was hurt and the coaches didn’t adjust the game plan to have him throw less is astounding. Something happened in or after the broncos game to change this team. The defense and the offense totally fell apart. When I hear players say opposing teams caught up with them and they failed to adjust, that tells me why Mangini was fired. As for Jones, before he starts calling out teammates he should take a look at his performance over the last 5 games, including the several balls he dropped and his diffuculty running during the losing streak.
Favre – Goodbye….You tried. We thank you for coming and giving it your best shot.
IF WE DON’T GET COWHER DUE TO FAVRE, WOODY SHOULD SELL THE TEAM TO SOMEONE WHO CARES ABOUT MORE THAN PSL’S….I’m hoping this isn’t actually case.
Jane – ho is this Gholston character you speak about?
Okay, you guys loved Favre when he brought the winning spirit to this team, the leadership, the winning attitude and let’s see, what am I forgetting? Oh yes! The WINS. You were 4-12 last season. Suddenly you were winning games. Beating TN & NE back to back. Everyone was singing Brett’s ( and your Coaches) praises.
Then you began to lose some. And now you all hate Brett. Wish him to just go away. How shamefully fickle you are. You don’t deserve Favre. He came in and learned a system and put NY Jets on the map. Got you noticed. Now you are throwing him under the bus.
As far as those players who are just NOW speaking out against BFavre – well let’s just say I didn’t see TJ making any big runs to help win vs Miami. He was what, 10 carries for 23 yards?
Pathetic.
Speaking for myself, I really don’t think I’ve been fickle at all when it comes to Brett.
The team’s overall improvement was as much a result of overhaul from top to bottom, as it was due to Brett. Again, I respect the man immensely, but some people keep talking about all the bad breaks he got or how he’s being thrown under a bus. The same defenders either seem to forget, or completely fail to understand, that all this stuff happened to Pennington during the previous year. Nobody gave him the benefit of the doubt either, but that’s just the life of a QB. Too much credit in victory and too much blame in defeat.
Too many folks are blinded by the love-dust to view the situation objectively.
Pennington has never won anything, so don’t mention him in the same sentence with the only three time MVP and SuperBowl
champion Brett Favre. It would be the same as comparing
big mouth Jones to Barry Saunders.Jones should keep quiet
after 23 yards rushing. Is Chads award a good thing? it could also tell you which Chad is showing up this year.I wouldn’t put mt money in his bank.Second time Chad wins this award.LOL Watch out next year 4-12 again. You can’t trust him.
Dan.. Sports are about “what have you done for me lately” And your 3X MVP and 1X Super Bowl Champion did nothing for us lately. Chad has his team in the playoffs. Do you think Brett would have done the same for the Dolphins. Apparantly anything anybody says about Favre offends you. I haven’t heard much direct praise for Farve from his teamates. That was 1X SB champ in 19 seasons which means he didn’t win the big game but once. He’s no Montana, Bradshaw, Elway, Brady, Starr, Aikman, or even Bob Greise. They all won multiple SB in much shorter careers. Your man is not GOD. And I for one never wanted him. I repeat never!!!!!!
Hey Dan,
The bottom line is this; Pennington had a better season than Favre. If they switched teams, I think Pennington would still have had a better season than Favre, so sue me. By the way, for the record what is Favre’s head to head record against Chad now?
Ooh, that’s three sentences with both players referenced in the same sentence. You’ll have to write me a ticket for the violation.
Dan..This was after 7 games

The old vs the new (well still old, but new). Brett Favre was traded to NY for a conditional 3rd to 1st round draft pick. Chad Pennington the old QB was deported to sunny Miami. The rusult? Lets see who’s been better thus far. Is it the gunslinger, or the game manager that no one wanted in NY anymore?
Pennington is 5th in the NFL with a 100.5 passer rating, Favre is 13th with an 89.5. Advantage: Pennington
Pennington has completed 140 of 202 passes for 69.3 % completion ratio. Favre has completed 161 of 235 for 68.5% completion ratio. Advantage: Pennington (close)
Pennington has thrown for 1,710 yards. Favre has thrown for 1,611. Pennington has 100 more yards passing despite throwing the ball 33 less times. Advantage: Pennington
Pennington has thrown 7 TD’s. Favre has thrown 15. Advantage: Favre
Pennington has thrown 3 INT’s with 1 fumble, which was recovred. Favre has thrown 11 INT’s with 6 fumbles, with 4 recovred. Pennington 3 total turnovers, Favre 13 total turnovers. Advantage: Pennington
Pennington has been sacked 11 times. Favre has been sacked 16 times. Advantage: Pennington
Pennington has had 1 poor game this season in a loss to the Cardinals. Favre has had 3 poor games this season in the past three games with passer ratings of 73, 47, and 76. Advantage: Pennington
Through 7 games Pennington’s longest pass has been an 80 yard TD, Favres has been 56. Advantage: Pennington
Pennington has 20 pass plays of 20 yards or more. Favre has 17. Pennington has 5completions of 40 yards or more, Favre has 4. Advantage: Pennington
Pennington is 3-4 with the rebuilding Miami Dolphins. Favre is 4-3 with the rebuilt NY Jets. Advantage: Pennington (close)
Who’s the better quarterback? Pennington leads Favre in 9 out of 10 major statistical categories. The numbers through both QB’s first 7 games have shown that Pennington has done more with less. He has passed for more yards with less pass attempts to receivers like Greg Camarillo, Fasano, and Ted Ginn. He has not turned the ball over and has given his team a chance to win every week. In short, he has done more, with a less talented team. Althought Favre has thrown 8 more touchdowns, he has 10 more turnovers than Pennington which produced 8 more scoring drives. Favre has turned the ball over and has repeatedly put his team in position to lose games rather than win them, this includes the “gimme games”.
The arm strength that was questioned in Pennington now sees Pennington leading in every major passing category, including downfield completions. I will admit that I am biased, but this is hard evidence that when you put two quarterbacks in brand new offenses, same amount of time to learn the playbook, one has clearly outshined the other.
In my opinion, this team wasted a draft pick and millions of dollars to put some #4 jerseys in the seats in Giant stadium. Maybe it’s about money and publicity, but Pennington has clearly been the better QB of the two at this stage in their careers.
joe b
You say Favre lost the game, then you say Chad won the game.
I’m not from the NY area but I do go to the odd game at Giant Stadium.Last year all I heard was get rid of Chad get rid of Chad, Take Mangini with you, your no good. All this was also true they were no good. You flip a coin you can’t call heads then say I meant tails.I’ve read you posts all year long, you change your view like the wind maybe north maybe south you think you know everything as long it is after the fact.I stick up for Favre cause he is a winner .17
years of winning seasons and never has he put the blame on his teammates except on himself.Easy for you to say get rid of him,it is apparent that Brett in one year has brought
more hope and MONEY to the Jets than Chad would bring to this team in a career.Your statement says it all you never wanted Favre.I think I’ll stick with Brett who hasn’t once made me feel like a looser. If Brett thinks he could do it again next year I’ll be here to cheer him on.A team must stick together, not like Jones and you putting blame on the man who got you there.Jones should bight his tongue and leave the football operations to the Brass.By the way Chad will go down this week end. Then I will ask you what has he done lately.Go Jets Go GO BRETT GO
Dan.. You are full of s*%t. Copy and paste one of my comments praising Favre or knocking Chad and I will never post again. If you can’t than you stay off for good. Is that a deal? I don’t expect the Dolphins to win this weekend. But they won last weekend. You are a real prognosticater. Everybody in sports is picking the Ravens. Do we have a deal?
Jones here is the facts:
In 9 years 48 TDS
Last year 1 TD in the whole year. You must of made a lot of people pissed off.To be honest Jones ran like a little girl.
Year 2000; 2 TDS 3 fumbles lost Boy were you hot!
Year 2002: 2 TDS 2 fumbles lost Surprise no Pro Bowl!
Year 2003: 3 TDS 2 fumbles lost Great offensive explosion!
Next 4 years 17 TDS No hall of Fame yet
Last year 1 TD and this year 13 TD funny Brett was with you this year.Jones is very lucky to still be in the NFL,so he should shut his mouth when he talks about his leader that just happens to have over five hundred TDS in his career.By the way that was some great running in the last game 23 yards, boy now I know why you were pissed off at Favre.By the way has Jones ever won anything?
Dan Put up or shut up. Still waiting for your answer
Fellas,
Lets be clear:
Favre was a good quaterback..in his previous years he threw for a ton of yards, and won a ton of games. But unfortunately, one could say the same thing about Evander holyfield, he won a ton of fights. Would I want him to be in the ring fighting for me today?
No.
Favre is done. Unfortunately the Jets are built to win now, so who ever is the next coach will see the writing on the wall.
But wait. Joe Flacco & Matt Ryan are rookies, and in the play-offs?Clearly a team can win with someone with under 17 years experience at QB – Why do we need Favre? to sell PSL’s? Jersey’s???
This is all moot as Favre will not want to come back to this situation. I hope Brett RAtliff gets a look..
You guys are the best. This is almost as vigorous a debate as my cheerleading post. But I need you both on the blog, so try to see eye to eye for a moment.
Vernon who??
its sad, but even we develop award winning defensive players, we send them away..
(i.e. Jon Vilma..Abraham…etc.) only to be successful in other towns.
Who was the last player who came to NY and became a better talent???
I guess Thomas Jones…but after that, I can’t think of anyone who was made better
having been tutored by the NY Jets braintrust
Dan…Even Modells is selling all Brett Favre wear at 50% OFF. By April it will be on the $10.00 rack
joe b
You and Chad should buy one each at that good price. Then we could call you dumb and dumber!Favre is done??In November he was the MVP of the league.Give the fellow a little slack.
The game against Miami didn’t turn out to be very important
to the Jets in the end anyways.Brett was probably happy for Chad after the game, maybe he even gave him a free ticket to the Pro Bowl.Joe you get me all choked up on how you think Chad is in same class as Favre!
Dan..Never said he was in the same class as Brett. All I said was this team was built for Chad and I wasn’t happy about getting Favre at this time in his career. If you can honestly say that Brett was better than Chad this year you weren’t watching too many games. He had his moments. However in the games they won the Defense stepped up. Against Arizona they turned over the ball to Brett 5 times, and when the defense went into the crapper in the second half of that game so did Brett five 3 & Outs. They shut down Tenn. They recovered a fumble against Buff in the final 1:30 Chad turned a 1 win team into a division champ. Brett turned a 3rd place team into a 3rd place team. His time is up. He would be foolish to come back. It will only diminish his legendary stature more.
Jane the best thing I like about this blog is that I won’t have
to talk to joe b till next year!!I like to wish you and all Jets fans a Happy New Year. Go Jets Go Go Brett Go
Dan.. Does that mean you couldn’t find a post where I was happy about Favre and Knocked Chad. Now lets see if you can keep your word. Also I wouldn’t waste my money on a Brett jersey. And there is no way he should be going to the Pro Bowl over Chad. Or even Phillip Rivers. Chads stats 7.67 ypc & 97.4 rating 19 TDs and 7 INTs. Brett 6.65 ypc 81.0 rating 22 TDs and 22 INTs. Popularity contest, that is all it is.
Dan – Brett is currently not in the same class as Chad.
One is an over the hill Hall of Fame QB, and the other is a mid-career QB who has finally
found a team that has produced an offense to fully utilize his potential. In his prime, surrounded by very good teams, Brett won ONE superbowl. not 2 or 4.
What could we expect from another season of Brett except more INT’s.
His last pass last year was an INT, and his last pass this year was also a pick.
I’m tired of him talking about lost opportunities, when he throws the ball directly at opposing players.
Now this team will have to wait for this washed up media darling to make his decision.
The guy admits he hates to practice, and now we can see the result of that.Is he the future of this team? NO.
If you look closely at the Jets comments, I think Brett has lost the locker room as much as Mangini did
To say that Favre was soley responsible for the early success of the team is crazy. Josey, I thought we spoke about this…TO SAY THAT favre was not at least half responsible for half of the collapse is naive…..This is not Green Bay – we don’t blindely love Bett.
So who’s waiting in the wings? Tom Brady? Joe Montana? Let’s be honest there is just a bunch of JP Losmans out there to choose from. Favre was and is the best QB by far for this team. It was the team that threw Favre under the bus not the other way around. The defense couldn’t stop anyone. They were all a bunch of losers with a losers mentality until Brett came in an gave them some confidence. If the defense could have stopped Denver, San Fransisco, the Raiders, or Seattle it would all be a different story. And there wouldn’t have been the need to throw all the passes. And where was Mr. Jones in those games?Unless Jones wants to talk about all his fumbles and inability to run when it counted he should keep his mouth shut.
The only reason Miami is in the playoffs is because of there defense…...just compare the games which the teams played the same opponent. The Jets scored as many or more in those games (except Seattle)...but still ended up 9-7. So to say Chad would be better…..nooooooo way. Take a notice that there are 3 or 4 QB’s in the playoffs with quarterback rating less or equal to Bretts. Why they made the playoffs…..defense, no when to mix run with pass and yes receivers who can catch the ball in traffic and crucial situations. Brett had 18 drops this year and I didn’t see all the games (viewing area) but I believe in the 5 games I saw 4 were dropped for TD resulting in field goals. And…how many times did Brett bring us back in the lead after an INT…Miami 17-14 then in 5 plays Miami takes over again. or like LC doesn’t even leave the line of scrimmage or drops ball off foot for INT or drops ball in Seattle 4th quarter for a TD drive or Keller dropping TD pass in Miami game… Jones come on..you looked like crap the last 4 games…you have nothing to bitch about. You just mad Brett couldn’t save your sorry ass….like the rest of you Jets. He did the best he could with what he had…bring me Driver and Jenning and you see the difference. You fans and reporters are fickle..always blame the QB for the losses but say he’s not the reason you win. Can’t have it both ways. How many times did you hear BRett blame is teammates for they being the reason for INT, fumbles, lack of defense etc….....0.
I agree with Miloslav, when he mentions his hope tht Brett Ratliff gets a long look next year. It may have only been pre-season, but he looked like a natural.
Finally hearing some real Jet fans!Brett gave us all a rush that the Jets with Chad could never of done.Chad had a good year so what.At no time during the year did I hear Miami
is in a position to go to SuperBowl or anything close to that. The season will end this week.Even joe b knows that and he changes his mind from day to day! With Chad this Jets team stunk. Now you have Brett who had the Jets finally going in the right direction. It didn’t end up great but it is in the right direction. The Jets must take all the good from this season and move on and let Brett with a new coach
(finally Magini gone)and another year of playing with his teammates bring us to the champioship, instead of hearing of
not a clue Jet fans like joe b and Eric Sec.309 who would
rather talk about a team that was going nowhere for the last forty yaers with players like Pennington.Be a true fan
and stick with a team that is going in the right direction…
Dorothy…For your info Brett had 22 ints. And Miami is in the playoffs because they won 2 more games than the JETS and the Division Title by beating the JETS on the final day of the season.. And on Sunday the JET D did not lose this game. They gave up the same number of points as the Dolphin D did. Those 2 great passes for ints in the 4th quarter sealed the fate of the JETS. Both led to TDs. Nobody is saying Brett wasn’t a great QB in his day. But his day has passed. It happens to all the great one. They don’t know when to hang it up. Brett is no exception …................................................Rider..You are right about the JP Losmans. However if Brett could have put up some points against Denver, San Fransisco, the Raiders, or Seattle it would all be a different story. So use your words correctly. “Unless Jones wants to talk about all his fumbles and inability to run when it counted he should keep his mouth shut”. Late in the season everyone knew Brett had a tired arm and crowded the box. That is why TJs numbers were down. Nobody feared the arm of Favre. TJ & Leon had 24 tds. Leon saved Bretts butt at least twice during the season.
Dan..”Even joe b knows that and he changes his mind from day to day”! I thought you were out of here. Copy & paste my comments where I change my mind from day to day. I want to see them myself. By the way where were you all season when your boy was playing fairly well. Never heard from you than. PUT UP OR SHUT..DAN
joe b
You hate to hear that you are Wrong and you babble about
copy and paste my comments as if you talk at times as a fool
(which is becoming more often than not).Try to use the little thing in your head which is called a brain when you
talk football.Chad Pennington is gone from the Jets”Thank God”his years will be remembered as a failure with the Jets.
Now try to think positive and move on with your Hall of Famer QB who will probably bring us a CHAMPIOSHIP.Instead of wasting time with stats about Pennington who is no longer a Jet and who was a failure as a Jet.Maybe you should become a Miami fan who haven’t won anything since 1972 and watch Chad in two years get another award for come back player of the year.Chad is a proven LOOSER and you seem to dwell on that???
I’ve been a true fan of the Jets for more years then I care to admit…ignorance doesn’t have to be part of the job description. The oldest Superbowl QB was Elway, at age 38 and I honestly don’t see Favre breaking that mark. As wise men once said “Man is real, not made of steel”...this remains true even old gunslingers like Favre.
Dan..If brains were dynamite, you wouldn’t have enough to blow your nose. That was my last comment directed directly at you. You talk through your a*s. This was a “this season” issue and you are trying to use stats from the past. I think the JET organization is one of the worst in all of football. If they bring Favre back they are crazy. So you and you pea size brain are off my radar for this season. Have a happy & healthy New Year. and it is spelled years, not yaers.
David
This wise man is saying that Brett will give us the best
chance to win the big one compared to any QB available out there!Think positive or maybe better THINK before you talk??
Comparing Chad and Brett is not like comparing apples and oranges; it’s like comparing apples and orangutans!
Offensive lines have to be compared, not only from team to team but from year to year! The comparisons that bloggers are making are a waste of energy. How would Brett have done if he’d had last year’s Jets’ offensive line? There’s just no way to argue what can only be imagined.
Also, the name-calling has got to stop. I thought that this blog was for grownups (of any age). Disagreement does not have to be this bitter. We all (except for that bizarre Giants’ fan) love this team, we’re all nuts, and we’re all passionate about it. There’s no need for the venom. Sad to see its sudden increase; makes this blog look like the others, which seem inhabited by spoiled, angry, whining children.
Lastly, am I the only one (besides Clemens himself) who thinks Clemens deserves a chance with the “new” Jets’ offensive line? Ratliff does indeed deserve a close look, and I would welcome that, but don’t toss Clemens onto the scrap heap just yet.
Happy New Year to all, even to that Giants’ fan, who seems to enjoy observing first-class, loyal misery.
David,
My last post was not aimed at your last one, which appeared while I was composing mine. Your name-calling stems from exasperation. It’s not your usual style, and I think we (almost) all know that.
Thanks Alex. No worries…you’re the voice of reason. As Jets, fans we’re basically an exasperated breed. I’m not going to beat this dead horse any longer. At least we have something to hold our attention now that team is through playing football. What would we do without offseason soap opera?
Happy New Year!
Favre threw a number of back breaking passes directly into the arms of the opposing
players.
The offensive coordinators could not control him, and provide enough guidance to Brett so that his task was made more simple
Chad had the same time(or less) to learn the Miami system than Brett did to learn the Jets system. The difference was Chad is a 32 year old team player; Brett is an ancient 39 year old loner.
Turn the freaking page! The only reason, THE ONLY REASON to keep him is to sell jersey’s and PSL’s
All of this infighting has to stop!!! Let us direct our hatred at the Giant fans who infiltrate our blog!
Favre, Favre, Favre – I’m sick of it!
On a more serious note – Thank the Lord that I am a yankee fan. I need something to help me recover from this disaster.
