Spags and Favre’s shoulder

December
30

The news just keeps breaking here.

Giants defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo has been granted permission to speak to the Jets and will that meeting will take place on Saturday.

An the front of Brett Favre’s achey shoulder, ESPN is reporting that sources say he can avoid surgery in the offseason or have a torn bicep tendon treated with arthroscopic surgery. That same source said the Jets have encouraged Favre to take as much time off as possible.

In the last two weeks, Favre has sounded like he’s ready to pack it in. Woody Johnson and Mike Tannenbaum obviously want Favre to stay, and must be hoping that his time off will have the effect it always has had—make the future Hall of Fame quarterback want another year in the game.

Update 4:44: Eric Mangini will interview for the head coaching vacancy in Cleveland on Tuesday in the New York area, a source told the Associated Press. Mangini was a public relations person with the Browns in 1994, and would buy pizza for the writers there every time he returned with the Jets. The Browns just fired Romeo Crennel.

In unrelated news, the NFL announced the 2010 Pro Bowl will be in Dolphin Stadium the week before the Super Bowl.

Hi…I’m Back. Can’t believe my computor went down when it did. Dec 23rd POOF. I missed all the good stuff. Hey Josey, I was against the Favre move from the beginning. Afterall, I just bought a Chad jersey and FATHEAD for my sports room. I will admit I kinda believed that maybe he wasn’t what I thought after he beat NE & Tenn. But alas he proved me right. I said he wasn’t in shape because he hadn’t attended any off season conditioning programs and no training camp. I wanted Mangini out and I push for Cowher. This team was built for Chad in the offseason. Why bring in a QB who throws the ball under durress and didn’t have a WR who can get open downfield. The only burner the JETS had was Clowney. And they didn’t use him. Mangini was a pro Bowl chewer of gum and that was about it. I said Favre would have about 25 TDs and 20 INTs before the season started. Oh yeah, Chad had 7 INTs. If we are looking for a new QB for next season, one guy who should be a target is Carson Palmer. Forget about Cassell. The Pats will either franchise him or trade him out of the conference. No way will Bellechick let him fall to the JETS. Cowher is the only answer and it may take him a few seasons to make this team winners.

Welcome back, Joe…good observations. Cowher is the one guy who I think might even be able to keep them competitive in his first year at the helm…that is if he can solve the Quarterback conundrum.

joe b and David ,do both of you have something wrong with your memory.Chad was so bad last year he was lucky to be picked up.He hasn’t won anything so just relax.I would bet my home that his season will end next week.As for Cassell he
will not make it as a regular starter. If Brett was not here I believe we would of had a bad year again. If Brett stays which I hope he does, give him a good coach and your in the playoffs. Before you blame Brett, look at the pass rush from the Jets, not good at all.Look at all the protection Brett
got the last five games”Piss Poor” at best.We had great kicking LOL a joke. The best of all was Mangini? I’ve never seen any coach in the Nfl as bad as him.He made mistakes after mistakes.Players couldn’t stand him and he showed no emotion and spirit at all.Favre is a winner so give the guy a break. The bottom line is the team got a hell of alot better, but they were not ready.Next year it will be much better.

    Hey Joe B.
I see that Brett has a torn bicep according to ESPN. I still feel that had Brett had a capable O-Line to give him more than a blink of an eye to throw, he would have been more productive. The shoulder injury was probably festering for sometime, considering the man played 17 straight seasons without missing a start, or much of a game.

Excuses for Brett? No. However, I do believe that he gave it his all for the Jets, and had he been there for all of training camps then perhaps the injury would not have occurred ( unless, as I said, he has been hurt since last year already).

I do believe, that if Brett commits, comes to ALL the mini camps and works out during the offseason, AND the Jets get a coach like Cowher, shore up the OLine ect…it still could be a good fit for the Jets for next season. They came further this year being 9-7 from last being 4-12. I think Brett had a lot to do with the attitude and believing in themselves for the team.

By the way, I am a Packer fan, although this year was very different for most of us. I still love the Pack but they need to rid themselves of Ted Thompson & Mike McCarthy, which will not happen this time around. Ray Rhodes coached for the Pack, took us to 8-8 and was fired. McCarthy went 13-3 last season with Brett, locked him out of the stadium, ripped out his locker and mailed it to him and then went 6-10 this season.

But I will always be a Favre fan, and I loved watching him play for the Jets. Good with the bad you learn to take with Brett. I felt your pain with each INT though. It was great fun watching and cheering for two teams that were no threat to each other unless they met in the SB.

I will be watching to see the outcome of the Jets coaching/QB search.

    Miss Josey

Look, there is nothing wrong with my memory, Dan. Pennington was hurt last year, soldiered on when he shouldn’t have been playing and got thrown under the bus, just prior to the start of the season. I’m not saying he has ever been the equivalent of Favre in his prime, but he showed this year that he would have been fully equipped to lead a team that was built to run. This year’s Jets were built to run and with all due respect to Brett, we couldn’t have finished any worse off with him at quarterback and maybe would have eaked out that playoff spot. The same conditions you use to excuse Brett are the same conditions that almost got Pennington killed last year. In fact it was much worse last year.

The fact is, any way you cut it, they are left with a big question mark at QB going into next year. Brett’s had a remarkable career, but at his age and wear and tear, I think it’s foolish to bank on him.

  6. Alex

Clemens is underrated. He says he’s ready, and I believe him. As I said earlier, consider how long Pennington carried a clipboard (and looked terrible in the few games he got to play in) before he was throwing TD passes in a playoff-game shutout. Give Clemens a real chance with a decent line (I say “decent” because it is better than last year’s turnstile line).

And I agree with David about Pennington last year. I was sorry to see him go, just when things were set up for him to succeed.

I don’t care what issues this tean had, Favre does not get out of this looking good. He made terrible decisions at times. People have to stop acting like favre fans and more like objective Jet fans.

    Dan

It has been 40 years from when the Jets won anything , And that was only because JohnnyU was playing with one arm.

SAME OLD JETS HAS BEEN THE CHANT FOR 40 YEARS AND WILL BE SO FOR 40 MORE.

But Dan Take heart that draft pick they got for Miami signing THE LEAGUE MVP Chad will be used to get a Top quarterback to replace Brett now that he also has one arm. Oh wait they cut him and wont get one . And what is worst New England ( A REAL TEAM) will not cut Cassell. And Dan Cassell won more games than the Jets did and with Brady not coming back next year he will win more.

Dan..In case you haven’t noticed he won the AFC East Title. Last year he didn’t have the OL that Favre had this year, plus he played hurt. Also last year we played a second place schedule. While this year Favre played a 3rd place schedule and lost to Oak, SF, Seattle, Denver, Miami and a NE team starting a QB who hadn’t started a game since high school. When Chad was healthy he played well. Plus Brett is 39 and looks 50. Brett should have stayed retired. He was an excellent QB in his time. But his time has past. PS Does anybody know which Draft Choice we lose for Favre and which ones we get for Vilma and Robertson.

  10. Erik Sec.309

I think Vilma is a 2nd or 3rd….depending on his performance.
