Favre and Mangini

December
30

A few final thoughts on a two-day whirlwind.

Most of the players didn’t want to say anything negative about Eric Mangini on the day of his firing. That said, a few privately said that Brett Favre’s relationship with Mangini was strained, and that when the powers that be had to decide between the two, Favre ultimately won the vote of confidence.

Right tackle Damien Woody said he thought Favre could be competitive next season despite the 22 interceptions—and nine in the final five games of the season—that led to the Jets’ reversal of fortune.

“I think he just wore down. I think just the fact that he came late, came in training camp. It’s a big deal when you’re not here in the offseason, you’re not in the minicamp. All those things are building blocks to help you build toward the season. When he got here we had to change everything. We were just doing things on the fly for a long time. In the end I think it caught up with us.”

And Kerry Rhodes: “If he’s dedicated and wants to come back and do this thing the right way and come here and be here when we’re here in training camp and minicamps then I’m fine with it. But don’t come here if it’s going to be half hearted or he doesn’t want to put the time in with us.”

Favre has not sounded like he wanted to return, no matter how much general manager Mike Tannenbaum and team owner Woody Johnson want him back. My thought, given that Favre’s locker was pretty well cleaned out before the media availability (except for some weird shrine with a signed helmet and football wrapped in plastic), was that Favre is on a strongly encouraged media timeout.

Favre does no good to management as a lure or bargaining chip with a future coach if he is already talking like he is out the door.

A few players are up for negotiation this year prominently including Favre, Mike Nugent, Eric Barton, Bubba Franks, Tony Richardson and Chris Baker—who hit incentive markers on his summer compromise after sitting out of OTAs.

    hahahahahahaha

the jets went hook line and sinker for favre and he tanks the season, so what do the geniuses who run the jets do? the fire the coach hoping to keep favre.

now they will have to wait for favre to make his retire or dont decision BEFORE they can hire a coach. good luck with that, green bay can give you some tips here.

now you need basically a one year hire coach who will keep the offensive coordinator and offensive scheme to accomidate favre, so forget about any of the big names, think fassel.

    then he may retire anyway.

and if he doesnt retire, you can expect his play to deteriorate next season similar to the way it deteriorated from last year to this.

then after he ruins next season, he retires and the jets need to rebuild and probably start looking for another coach.

    J-E-T-S, what-a-joke!

    G-Men,

You’re a joke…..Get off of the JET blog. With all of the talking you do, you better hope the Giants win again this year.

I would like to think that Jet fans have more class than you. We wouldn’t go on to another team’s blog and talk smack just because our team was doing well. Hopefully we would care more about our team doing well than another team doing poorly.

I don’t even hate the Giants…...But obnoxious fans like you make it harder for me to root for them to do well when the Jets get knocked out.

    G-Men,

We’re like family on this blog…..Don’t hold back, you can tell us. Was your last boyfriend that dumped you a Jet fan? Is that why you’re so bitter?

Don’t worry about G-Men, he might not be laughing so hard if the Jets take away his defensive coordinator.

Personally, I think the quarterback position, with or without Favre, is the biggest potential headache for any incoming new coach. Nobody has seen enough of Clemens or Ratliff to really know what they hold for the future and Favre is like an elephant in a rowboat…whichever way he leans, the rest is sure to follow.

Favre has put Jets back to respectable team.Last year at this time, the team was a joke.Mangini is finally gone.Favre
hopefully will stay and the Jets will be in the hunt again
next year. Now 17 years with winning season. You can’t go wrong with Brett as your leader.Brett didn’t win back to back road games against the Pats and Tenn. without talent.
He will lead again next year!

    David,

Sorry we lost out on Cowher, whom I know you wanted (as did I and many others; you were just more public about it). It was that GM thing, I’m sure. Sound familiar, a la Big Bill B.?

Let’s hope we give that Giants’ fan something else to worry about, as you suggest.

And, yes, Erik, we are like family on this blog. This is such a quality site. Thank you, Jane. It makes the losing and dumb mistakes and general mayhem somehow infinitely more tolerable.

Hey Alex, I know I’m acting like Linus, waiting for the Great Pumpkin to arrive, but I don’t think the Cowher possibility is DOA, just yet:

Sure the odds seem a bit long, but maybe, just maybe….

Cowher, Cowher, Cowher…..Lets do whatever it takes!

The latest reports are all looking very, very good. Fingers crossed. And Cowher has seemed supportive of the Jets most of the season in his job as NFL pregame analyst. I think he sees the talent that might tempt him to take the job as head coach.
