Mangini out, search begins

Woody Johnson and Mike Tannenbaum addressed a packed press room and announced this morning that Eric Mangini is no longer coach of the Jets. The two made the decision to fire the coach last night after talking about extending Mangini when the team was 8-3.
I asked if he thought Mangini lost the locker room, and Johnson, the team owner, said they had considered that. Both refused to say anything negative about Mangini, and wouldn’t address the specifics that went into the decision. The coordinators, Bob Sutton and Brian Schottenheimer, are also on the line.
“We’ve got a lot of talent in the building, no question about it,” Johnson said. “So that will be part of the process as we roll this forward.”
Both were vague about what kind of a coach they were looking to find, or who would be brought for an interview.
As for Brett Favre, Johnson was adamant about wanting him back. “Brett Favre was a huge net positive for this team,” he said. As general manager, Tannenbaum said he wanted to get a coach in place before deciding on Favre, which contradicts what Favre said he wanted in a timetable last week.
Here is Johnson and then Tannenbaum on whether Mangini lost the locker room.

This firing is the one positive to come out of this disastrous collapse. Mangini had lost this team. It was clear to see that they weren’t playing hard for him. Teams with nothing to play for (Seattle, 49ers, Bills) played with more emotion than a team that at the time was leading the division. Hopefully every other coach except for Westhoff soon follows in Eric’s footsteps.
Do we really want Favre back?
HUUUUURRRAAAHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Favre won’t come back, he must be able to tell that he can’t do it anymore….but Oscar de la Hoya can’t tell either, as is the way with all toasted sports legends..
This firing reminds me of the Willy Randolph 2:30 AM firing by Omar… but that was mid-season, and Mets still fell out of contention.
Woody – please do not go for: Marty Shottenheimer, Romeo Crennel(now released from Browns), the Lions coach…or even Mike Shannan who is rumored to be next on the block.
The idea of talking with Giants Def Co. Spagnolo is interesting, but first convince Cohwer that he doesn’t need to be GM, make him Coach, and head of player personnel or something.
The other question that comes to mind, is who is taking care of the baby powder and Band-aid industry if Woody is spending all his time on something silly like Football?
On a more serious note…I had a long sit down conversation with my 4 month old son. I told him that I wouldn’t get angry if he decided (when he is old enough) to switch teams. He smiled back at me – He must’ve been gassy.
Erik – Maybe the jets will hire “dora the explorer” to help lead the search for the new coach(Swiper..no swiping other coaches until the Superbowl is over!).. he may be happy with that.
The audio clip is very telling because Tannebaum(how old is Tannenbaum..he looks about 29??) is essentially saying that its not the players fault for losing. That despite their hard work, they were ill-directed to win.
It’s an even greater insinuation that the coaches were not able to produce “schemes” and “packages” in the “3 phases” to “take advantage of opportunities” resulting in “failure to
execute”
There I think I have paraphrased every single Mangini press conference for the last 3 years.
[...] Jane asked whether he lost the team. [...]
Mangini was fired for one reason:
He is bad for PSL sales. This is the offseason for PSL sales and Jets fans are pissed. They hate Mangini. They wouldnt buy if he was given another year.
Now they can bring in a name coach that will energize the fans and open their wallets. They will nudge Favre into retirement, and sign another big name QB.
Dont be misled, its all about the PSL money.
Go get Cowher!!!
The first, and most important, of the three wise men may be arriving sooner than I had anticipated. Could Clemens (I’ve long been a supporter of the second-round pick that has never been given a decent chance with a decent line) be the Baby Namath we’ve been looking for? Now, how do we rope in a star?!
I think it’s telling that the Jets did not make Brett get an MRI and would never consider benching him when he was injured. They don’t trust Kellen. personally I would’ve rather seen a healthy Clemens if Brett was truly hurt.
An anymous Jet player stated frustration with Brett’s propensity to throw the ball to the other team. He laso said that the coaches were always conceeding to Brett when they should have been running the ball more. He said the Jets strength was their run game and at times it was abandoned to please Mr. Favre….....Something tells me this mystery man is a grunt on the O-line.
I also think it was very selfish if Brett thought he was hurt and didn’t alert the team until last week. If he was hurt, he could’ve been hurting the team. Did he just do this in order to keep a games played streak intact?
