Favre and away

December
29

Two notable absences from media availability today at Florham Park—Brett Favre and Eric Mangini. Both were here for player meetings but ducked the press. Favre refused all interviews, and Mangini will issue a statement later which is in keeping with his less-is-more media policy.

As for the shoulder, Favre said Sunday night that he had an MRI planned for today. The Jets will not confirm or deny that. Team owner Woody Johnson was asked why the team didn’t have Favre’s shoulder examined during the 1-4 slide to end the season, and had a somewhat unbelievable explanation.

“I think it’s up to Brett whether he wanted an MRI or not,” Johnson said.

Certainly a team has the right to ensure the safety of a $12 million throwing shoulder, which Favre said hurt down the back, side and sometimes to his neck. A Jets spokesperson said there would be no information on the injury from the club, but Favre expressed doubts last night that he would want to come back from a potential surgery.

Update 5:08: The Jets get the 17th pick in the 2009 draft.

Jets opponents for 2009: Home — New England, Miami, Buffalo, Jacksonville, Tennessee, Atlanta, Carolina and Cincinnati. Away — New England, Miami, Buffalo, Houston, Indianapolis, New Orleans, Tampa Bay, Oakland.

With 9 pro bowlers he should have done a lot better. He needs to get on these players…way to soft

I didn’t realize it was up to the player to get am MRI…..didn’t the Jets invest their money in him. Hell no, it’s not up to the player. If your player is feeling hurt, it is in the best interest of the franchise to get the man checked out. I really don’t understand the Jets logic in this one.

9 int. and 2tds in the last 5 games = please retire

Erik: Woody and Tanny are idiots. Instead of accepting any blame, they blame Favre for not getting an MRI earlier.

That is complete and utter bullcrap. The players belong to the team. If they have a question about his health, they send him off and have him checked out.

This is why Woody and Tanny cant be trusted. They dont do the right thing for the team, instead do what’s right for making money.

Why do we ALWAYS have to go to *&$%#@ Oakland? This has to be some kind of sinister plot! Remember Herm, knowing the hot-dog vendors by first name at Oakland?!

    Alex:

The Jets dont like riff-raff like Raider fans at the Meadowlands. Its a family atmosphere… :-)

First of all, It is impossible that its up to the player to get the examination.. Just impossible.
The player has signed a contract and at the time of signing must clear a physical, so it make sense that the team can force them to get evaluated at any time.

Secondly, how could anyone argue that Brett was a net positive for the team, when Chad finished with a higher record then the Jets, and the Dolphins have a roster of nobody’s.

What will it take for Mikey Tannenbaum to lose his job? Does he get another 5 top 1st rounders to sit on the bench, ala Vernon the friendly Ghoulston??

What other team has top 10 selection inactive for its final 5 games??? Does this show improvement from anyone? he was drafted to be the pass rush, what happened?

  7. Bob

Jack Sprat – its “ONLY” 7 pro-bowlers…and if Brett Favre is a pro-bowler, you know it means nothing, I would say there were few QB’s ranked lower than Favre.

HERE HERE,The Jets had a good, great and terrible season.
Without Brett last year Jets season was just terrible. So shut up and move on.Jane you are a reporter that jumps on and
off the wagon as if you were having sex.Brett brought this team so high this year that many fans were thinking Super Bowl.Chad had us thinking toilet bowl for so many years.Chad will be knocked out next game,so the circus show will be over.Chad will not make playoffs next year.Jets got the best players available this year, one mistake Mangini.Jets will find much better and move on.So do not blame Brett for the year end flop.It was the whole team, and the coach could not handle pressure,so good bye.

    Dan,

You must have been out of the room when Favre made some of the decisions that he did. No one is saying that we would be better with Chad. We just expected a better result with favre.

I’m torn on this….maybe it’s time for him to go. Maybe he’ll be better if he goes through mini-camp and Summer sessions. Cothery was right when he said (more or less), “Don’t come back unless you are willing to out in the time. Don’t come back if you’re not putting your all into this.”

  10. Dan

I was in the room when I watched Brett getting hit every
play.Mangini made so many bad calls during the final stretch
it tore the team apart. At Giant stadium, even when we won fans showed dislike toward the coach. If the fans can figure out
that he is not sure of himself, imagine how the players felt?
His calls in Seattle were the nails in his coffin.Brett was
hailed as Super Man after week eleven. To put the blame on Favre is wrong. All year players and fans were saying how is leadership pulled this team together.Brett had us thinking Super Bowl,Chad had us thinking toilet bowl.I didn’t think Brett would bring us a champioship in one year.He did a great job, give the guy a break.Mangini on the other hand
was the cancer of this team.Bottom line Favre, and a offensive minded coach with the same team the sky is the limit. The whole team must take some blame that is why
    they are called a team.

  11. Erik Sec. 309

People shouldn’t have hailed Favre as a Superman…..There were a lot of plays in which he simply threw into coverage. Sure sometimes he was being bull rushed. A novel idea in those cases would be to throw the ball away.

No one is saying it is all his fault. But please let’s stop all the hero worship. He holds a good amount of blame.

I agree with you 99%, he is my hero!
