Jets loss likely short-circuits season

The Jets lost to Seattle in the snow, 13-3 and are 9-6 with one game left in the regular season. Jets coach Eric Mangini looked disappointed in the post-game presser, and quarterback Brett Favre (below, AP photo) looked disjointed. He seemed utterly confounded by what had just happened, and couldn’t explain what happened to the 8-3 team that beat the Titans.
“If we could play like we did against New England and Tennessee every week, boy, we’d be hard to beat,” Favre said. “But I don’t have all the answers. And after those two games it would be easy to say, ‘Boy, yeah, we’re good’ and all this stuff. We’re the same team. We’re the same guys, the same guys in practice. Believe me, every guy in that locker room is disappointed. If we didn’t know any better, if we were naïve to what we had in our grasp and what we’ve let go, then it really wouldn’t matter. You see players come and go all the time but didn’t realize the opportunity they had. I think this team really does realize it.”
In order to make the playoffs, the 9-6 Jets have to beat 10-5 Miami and 10-5 New England or the Ravens have to lose. Favre said that what made it hurt more was being so acutely aware of what the stakes were at each stage in the game.
“This team is well aware of what opportunities have been in front of us,” Favre said.
That said, Favre could have hardly played worse. He was 18 for 30 with no touchdowns and two interceptions and a 48.7 passer rating. Favre was also sacked four times. He also looked indecisive at times before throwing, needing more time in the pocket that the O Line just couldn’t provide. He has (as Joe B likes to point out) 19 interceptions on the season.
In the last four games, Favre has not looked like a player about to find a second wind.
As for Mangini, he has come out at time steely or angry, but I haven’t seen him look as beaten as he did after the loss to Seattle.
“Like we talked about a few weeks ago, there are no shoo-ins, there is nothing guaranteed,” Mangini said. “The only thing guaranteed is that you have the opportunity to go play good football each week, as we had the opportunity to do.”
He might want to pull down the shades and keep the radio off tomorrow, because he is going to be picked apart for certain calls. The decision to settle for a FG on 4th and 1 in the first drive. Not letting Jay Feely take a second FG attempt after the delay of game. And the decision not to punt late in the game on 4th down.
Mangini said he thought his players had a good week of practice leading up to the game, but this loss makes it 0-4 on the west coast.
“I don’t know that collapse is the right word,” Damien Woody said. “But I just know we didn’t finish the deal. We didn’t finish the deal. That is the easiest way that I can comprehend this thing. It was all right there in front of us, but we didn’t close the book on this thing. All we had to do was take care of our business. Like I said, we don’t have anyone else to blame but ourselves. Now we are in a situation where now we have to wait and see; we still have to win next week. Even if we win, we still have to wait and see what happens. It is frustrating.”
As for this week, the Jets have not yet released their Christmas schedule. The Giants have already given the players and media Christmas Day off, but the Jets are in a holding pattern before they release that information. Green = Grinchy on this one.
Update: The Jets won’t be flexed into prime time this week. Broncos at Chargers got the nod.

The Jets stunk it up as a team, but Mangini had two opportunities to show confidence in his team—and failed miserably.
You invest millions of dollars in the 0-line, have the AFC’s leading rusher and a Hall of Fame QB behind center—and you kick a FG..Against a 3-11 team? On the game’s first drive?? Which ate up 7 1/2 minutes?
And then you PASS UP the FG in the 4th quarter to punt—after Feeley made the previous kick with yards to spare?
MAN-GENIUS? More like MAN-KOTITE
olblu-well put.
This team clearly does not deserve the play-offs. I’m sure the “Pro- bowl” committee is going to use this Jets season as evidence to wait until the season is over to make its selections. SEVEN PRO-BOWLERS???? I can’t point to any impact player in any part of their game?? We’ll never know what Leon Washington can do, because the Mangenious keeps him skillfully under wraps so that he can’t possibly help the team.
The GM should be fired, as well as the entire coaching staff.
The O-line couldn’t push over its own shadow today…
Don’t talk about the weather…the Pats scored 47 in the same conditions
sad.
This is as bitterly disappointing as NY Jets letdown I have lived through…and that is saying something. Lucy Van Pelt lives to forever pull the football from in front of the Charlie Brown faithful. I’ll try to have a better attitude tomorrow, but for now, all I can say is screw Mangini and the rest of the pathetic Jets coaching staff. 7 pro Bowlers and no playoffs? No excuses…. worse yet, while everyone was busy throwing Chad under the bus, I dare say, they would have clinched by now, if they had kept him. Everyone who called him a noodle arm is now exposed as a lead-eating idiot.
Alright…I’m through spewing venom for one night. Happy Holidays!

Alex,
What’s up? This silence has me worried about you!
David,
Do you think it’s a coincidence that Chad is doing great now that he has left? No…if he was here, we would be hovering around the same exact record. He would have the same terrible coaching staff and sub par receivers that Brett has. This is not to say that Brett hasn’t been a colossal dissapointment because he truly has been.
This franchise is what the Red Sox used to be – perrenial losers.
Who is this guy they call Ghoulston?
Alex must be speechless.
This team is like the Island on the show Lost….when players/coaches arrive, they truly become LOST.
When will the parade of Joe Walton – Coslet – Pete Carroll – Kotite
Herm Edwardsnincompoops be ended???Why would the Jets admin build what appears to be a Ferrari, and ask a team of non-drivers to race it ??
Mangini is the second youngest head coach (of all current head coaches), to be hired, after Jon Gruden….He is too inexperienced – FIRED
Brian Shottenheimer(off coordinator) age 35 – previously 4 years QB coach at San Diego – FIRE HIM
Bob Sutton(Def Coordinator – his profile on the Jets site is all about turning Vilma into a stud..WHERE IS VILMA NOW?
Ghoulston? a no show… kris Jenkins?? Pace? Fanaca?? no impact..
Well said Jonathan….The only coach that should survive is Paul Westhoff. And with his age and medical condition, why the hell would he want to stay a part of this miserable franchise?
J-E-T-S!-L-O-L!!!!!!!
BILL COWHER BILL COWHER BILL COWHER BILL COWHER BILL COWHER…Need I say more.
Choking S-O-B’s. Hope all of you fans who rushed out and spent cash on #4 jerseys enjoyed his one lousy season as a choking Jet. FIRE MANGINI
CHOKE.
Can you imagine a conversation between Mangini and Tannenbaum?
It should be the most lengthy Butt-chewing in history.
His ears should be ringing for weeks after the torrent of poor decisions are reviewed
Where was Leon W??? – He’s smart, he was probably calling his agent, with one request:
“Get me out of this pit of losers”
.Remember when…..11/24/08
Remember way back when, when Brett Favre was too old, too washed up, too prone to turnovers, and too attached to Green Bay to make a difference in New York?
Remember all the critics who said that even with Brett Favre, the Jets were, at best, an 8-8 football team?
Well, after only eleven games into his New York Jets career, Favre already has the Jets at eight wins, and certainly isn’t showing his age.
No, the 39 year old gunslinger is still firing rockets, still smiling, and still having fun like only Brett Favre can.
Oh, and he’s still winning football games.
His numbers, while not eye-popping, are better than respectable.
His 20 touchdowns have him ranked third in all of football, while his passer rating of 94.1 is good for seventh.
He’s ninth in passing yards with 2,461, while the most surprising statistic of all might be his completion percentage, a category in which he leads all NFL quarterbacks, completing 70.6% of his passes.
Sure, he’s thrown 13 interceptions, which conveniently also lead the league, but that shouldn’t come as much of a surprise for a guy who is the all-time career leader in both touchdowns and picks.
Of course the most important statistic is one.
One representing first, as in the place in the standings Favre finds his team
What about PSL sales? Any clue if this means the prices will drop? What about proposed ticket price increases next year – any chance they will need to be postponed due to season implosion?
Is this some kind of a JOKE…........................After the Jets loss to Seattle, how does the rest of the season go?
Jets beat Miami, Pats lose and they go to the playoffs.
Jets lose to Miami.
Jets beat Miami, but it’s meaningless because the Pats win.
Who cares? Wake me when the Draft is here.

Yeah, I’m a Packers fan following the Jets out of devotion and gratitude to Favre. So I’m totally biased.
But I think Brett’s season has been much better than his numbers, if that makes sense. Go ahead and complain about the one bad decision he made yesterday. What about that opening drive? And how many times did he get knocked down? Did you see some of the hits he took?
Excuses, excuses, I know. But I think Favre and the entire offense have been done in all year by atrocious play calling. The moment something goes wrong, Mangini’s fears and insecurities are so obvious and his tendencies so easy to predict. Every defensive coordinator in the league has them figured out.
I just called the Jets office a few minutes ago. I asked will PSL prices be revised. I have asked this before and been told—no. Prices posted on the jets site are the prices.
I was told today that they will likely be revised but no one will say until January when the letters go out.
Does anybody in the NFL want to go the playoffs?
In Week 16, six teams approached the prospect of January football like school kids who don’t go out for recess because it’s too cold.
Four teams that controlled their own destinies let that control slip away, though one got it back before Sunday was over. Two other teams that could have clinched playoff spots lost at home.
One team gave up 41 points at home. Another scored three points total. A third fumbled seven times.
The Cowboys, Buccaneers, Eagles, Jets, Vikings and Broncos all laid odious stinkbombs in what became Gutless Choke Week in the NFL….......................................................Gutless Choke = Mangini. Need I say more
Something happened to my TV it switched the “Heidi” movie at mid-streem!!! Great movie great ending!! What the H*ll were you guy’s watching!!!
Yes it’s that bad when you compare the famous Heidi cut in to the train wreck some of you battled to watch!!! As for me? I flipped the the other wreck worth watching Philly vs Skins!!! Thats three teams that will have “heads” to roll by the end of next week!!!
The Heidi movie wasn’t bad after all??? LOL!!! what’da say Jane??
Joe, good question. Seems like I can count all the teams who collectively really want a title on one hand.
See the Giants-Panthers game last night? Those guys want it. The Patriots? They didn’t just take care of business yesterday – they admininistered a brutal beating on a “playoff team,” as if to say to the whole AFC, “You guys better hope we don’t get in.”
The Jets did not adjust over the past few weeks. They used the same pass rush techniques that failed the previous two weeks and their offense was predictable. Goos coaching requires the coaches to anticipate what the opponent will do and choose a game plan that will counter that. The jets did not adjust and lost. I can’t fault the effort of the players.
Word has it that Leon said on WFAN that the team isn’t motivated by the head coach….while he may not mean it to be a dig, that says something. This coach does not get through to his players at all. They are lifeless. They have taken on his persona.
Jane – What are your opinions about Mangini’s future?
Since the team cares about 1/10 the amount the fans do, I think us bloggers could go out there, get our buts kicked like the Jets, but show a hell of a lot more passion than this squad.
These last 4 games were a slap in the face to all JET fans. Going 1-3 with a ultra-lucky win against Buffalo. Do not play Favre on Sunday. Because if Chad beats us against Favre it will be the final straw. Plus we have to see what we have for next year. It was a collosal mistake to bring in Favre this season. The FAs signings were done with Chads game in mind. Nobody expected the JETS to get Favre. The team was built for the running game that was misused with Favre. He came in out of shape, never really was able to grasp the playbook. And by the 10th game of the season was exhausted because he was out of shape. Chad could have completed most of the passes Favre did. Short slants and fades. Favre had a chance to go out a winner and he blew it. He came back to pad his TD numbers. The JETS don’t have many records in the NFL and when Favre gave Micheal Strehan his freebee sack we lost one of the few we had. This organization doesn’t care about anything but money as per PSLs. They didn’t even mention the death of Sammy Baugh. Even though he was the first head coach in this organization (NY Titans)1961 inaugaral season

I’m a Packer fan following Brett. Yes he missed a few receivers, but look at the drops by receivers in crucial situations, penalties, sacks (30 this year). Seemed like he was always needing 7-10 yards on 3rd down. Please for once could a reporter blame someone else besides the QB for a loss or why his stats look like they do. Yes he has 19 INSts….but lets be honest…alot were receivers running wrong routes, stopping their routes, balls thru their hands or the dropped ball that hits off his foot. Besides look at last year when he was 13-3 (15 INT and 28 TD but only 15 sacks)...he is not far off that mark. We are 9-6 and if the defense would have played better in half those losses we wouldn’t be talking about anything…when the offense scores 17-20 points we should be able to win. Look at the Packers this year 5-10 and the same team Brett had last year…explain that.
Dorothy..I feel your pain. I too wish he was still a Packer
Dorothy – You don’t watch close enough.
1) It was Brett who often times does not know the routes and throws it God knows where.
2)It was Brett that underthrew a wide open David Clowney on Sunday.
3) It was Brett that threw away 2 easy passes on 3rd and 4th down which should have lost us the game vs. the Bills.
4) It is Brett that has a rating that is falling faster than our stock portfolios.
.....That being said, Coles did drop his ONE (maybe second) nice pass of the day.
I loved Brett when we got him. He threw great passes to the receivers during summer camp at Hofstra. He looks old, sluggish, and depressed to be here.
Please, enough with blaming these losses on Brett. I have never seen such a pathetic O-line in my life. Not even the great Chad P. would be able to get a decent pass off with the lack of protection that the Jets Offensive line gives to Brett. The man has no time, NO time to throw.
So, instead of pointing your sad little finger at Brett Favre, try looking at your O-Line or lackthereof. Coles? Oh yes, the new T.Owens. Crying that he does not get the passes, and when he does he drops ‘em.
The Jets were a lousy 4-12 last year WITH the great Chad P. They not only will go out with a winning season, but a shot at the playoffs as well this year. And for that, you can thank Brett Favre for giving you those exciting games this season that you otherwise would not have had. Chad P. would not have done any better – he would still have the same pathetic O-line, the same Coaches and the same receivers. In fact, Chad would have the Jets very well at .500 this year at best.
I say “Thank you, Mr. Favre for a memorable season!” and take your seat.
“Thank you, Mr. Favre.????????” Stop holding him up to the level of an icon….that is his past. Josey, to deny that he has been bad is ignorant or just plain dumb. No, it’s not all his fault, but he holds a good amount of blame.
Well Erik Sec. 309, I agree to a point that Favre ( just as everyone on this team) takes some of the heat, no doubt. But does he deserve to be hung out to dry now that the Jets are losing? Nope. You see, the problem I have with all of this finger pointing, is that some fans are fickle when it comes to backing a team or in this case, a player or even a Coach.
One Sunday you all are complaining they don’t let “Favre be Favre” then another, you are calling for Chad again because Favre is throwing INT’s. I have yet to hear much about the receivers or the O-line. Favre is your scapegoat this year, just as most QB’s are.
Take this year for what it is/was. Good with the bad, exciting with the frustrating. Just don’t blame the one person who does go out there, game after game and gives it his all. He does not make excuses, as receivers often do. He does not point fingers, nor does he try and shift the blame.
Love Favre or hate him, he is the most exciting QB to ever play the game. Who else jumps around like a kid on the playground after a TD? Tears of joy, tears of pain after losing his father…Favre is Emotion and that is how he plays. I guess I am saying, Erik is this: I feel fortunate in the this division to have been able to watch him play, just as fans in the NFC would be excited to have the opportunity to watch a few games with Brady, Manning, Montana or Elway play.
Packer fans are loathing their team and their organization right now because they have a QB that they sunk 65 million dollars into after winning 5 games and losing 10. Aarron Rodgers plays without the emotion that Green Bay fans have come to love after 16 years. Let’s be thankful that our Jets are at least in the position they are in right now – yes it could be and SHOULD be a much better position, and yes, Favre has to shoulder some of that. But he is and he does. He doesn’t need bandwagon fans to jump now.
I haven’t seen anywhere near jumping in the stands at the Meadowlands. Truth be told, he looks depressed. I was for getting Favre, but you cannot hide behind the fact that he has faded mightily recently. Some of it is the line’s fault. Some of it coaching. Some of it receivers. Some of it, actually a good amount of the mistakes over the past 3 weeks have been his own fault. I watch the games very closely…..At one big juncture in the previous play, it was 3rd and about 5. Favre locked on one receiver, and threw into double coverage. Had he checked down (which he seemed to do well in GB), he would have seen Brad Smith dragging across the field at about 8 yards – wide open. Face it, it is not the same Brett. He doesn’t hold the iconic status in NY that he did in GB. He doesn’t get mulligans for his mistakes here. Even the great Brett Favre is held accountable in NY.
On another note, you make a fair point about the O line. Know I have to question why the coaching staff inexplicably stopped running the ball when his main rb was going off for 5.1 yds./carry. Maybe there would have been less pressure on Brett if the coaching staff made the stinkin’ Hawks defense stack 8 in the box…...Cowher, Cowher, Cowher!
Erik,
Fair enough. Although in Green Bay too, the past couple of seasons Brett was blasted for his INT’s where this year, Rodgers ( Golden Boy) has thrown many game ending INT’s and not once has McCarthy nor the media pointed the all knowing finger at him.
I agree with you on Brett not being the same, and at 39 he wasn’t going to be. It seems the Coach has stars in his eyes as well when it comes to letting Brett do too much without accountability. He needs to sit him down this week and make him understand in no uncertain terms that come Sunday – he does not throw that long ball into double coverage, play smart and for God’s sakes if it is snowing or freezing cold, run the ball with your RB’s.
Thanks for the civil conversation & Merry Christmas.
Miss Josey
lol Same Ol’ Jets & same ol’ JETS FAN. Erik Sec. 309 is a same ol’ JETS fan. A loser like his team.
You spend $120 Million on your team, get the great Brett Favre who took the youngest team in NFL to a 13-3 record and OT against the Super Bowl Champs last season, have the awesome Leon Washington who you never play, get to 1st place in your division, then choke because you can’t finish the job.
You are outcoached. Simple. You have no Offensive Line. Simple. Favre got sacked 30+ times so far with a game to go. Last year, he got sacked only 15 times. You lose to 5th stringers and your O line gets decimated by losers. You have no Defense. Simple. You make every loser QB in the league look like the second coming of Joe Montana. Tyler Thigpen??? Jamarcus Russell??? Matt Cassell??? J.P. Losman???
Mangini, Schotty or Snotty or however you spell it, and Bob Sutton are horrible coaches. Schotty has some glimpses of decency like the naked bootleg by Favre against Buffalo, but not enough to compete effectively. What idiot runs 3 running plays at the 1 yard line and fails??? Ummm. First. Try a sweep if you can’t run it up the middle. Second. Try mixing it up maybe and try a throw once? And who throws 3 times in a row when all you need is 1 yard??? Maybe try a run in between throws? And who has Leon Washington and doesn’t use him on every play, either alone, with Jones or both??? Just having Washington in the game is a game changer. If you want to open up the passing, put him in and then play action and pass. Simple. Every team in the NFL can do it. Miami can certainly do it. Patriots can do it. Not the Jets.
This years O line is not better than last year’s, contrary to popular opinion. Chad Pennington on this team would do about as well as he did last year for the Jets or worse. The big reason he is doing so much better with Miami than he did with the Jets. Simple.
HE’S WITH FREAKING MIAMI!!!! Dur. Bill the Tuna and Sparano. 1 Legendary coach and turn around King. 1 great Offensive play caller for the Dallas Cowboys. Mangini and crew aren’t worthy of wiping their asses.
Miami has an efficient, noodle armed QB that doesn’t make mistakes, and an O line that doesn’t allow as many sacks. And a mediocre Defense with 1 pass rusher who is awesome, that can manufacture a pass rush occasionally.
The New York Jets. Crappy, inexperienced, timid head coach. O line that can’t play. Defense that can’t pass rush or run stop. Legendary quarterback who can make things happen, but needs protection as his aging legs can’t escape a determined pass rush. Mediocre recieving corp that can’t get any separation and are undersized with only 1 decent receiver in Clowney. Great blocking and running fullback in Richardson who doesn’t get used enough. Great runner and kick returner in Washington, that also doesn’t get used. *scratches head* Coaches who come up with a decent and unpredictable game plan on their first drive, then returns to predictable, lame play calling.
The QB, no matter how powerful an arm or how good, needs PROTECTION and decent receivers. Look at Kurt Warner when he loses protection. He may have the 2 best receivers who have played the game in the past 10 years. But, without protection, he throws Interceptions, Fumbles, Under Throws. Eli Manning with no protection and Plax out. Sacks left and right, missed throws, interceptions. With protection, he makes nobodies into somebodies like Hixon.
Favre. Great arm. Great eye. Great leadership. Great instincts. Suck ass receivers. Suck ass line. Suck ass coaching. Suck ass Defense. 1 good runner, 1 awesome runner who isn’t used often enough.
The entire Jets season and their success are because of Favre, Jenkins, Jones, Washington, Hodges. Where did Ghoulston go???
hahahahahaha
Run Osi,
Wow, a personal shot…..Let me guess – You are a person that types tough. Most likely you are a nerd.
Yes, I am a Jets fan. So what? Jets fans are losers? I forgot it takes a cool man to go to another team’s blog and talk about how much they suck.
At least I can say this – I will stick with my team no matter what. I am not a fair weather fan. If and when the GMen stink, you will suddenly become a huge hockey fan.
Keep typing tough – It really intimidates all of us “loser” Jet fans.
Have a crappy holiday season. May the recession cause you to lose your job. At least then you can go back to your real hobbies of computer hacking and surfing adult websites. Loser.
– Erik
As a fan I have enjoyed scanning the comments on this blog throughout the season…just for entertainment, never feeling the need to post. But the lengthy comment written by a “Run Osi Run” was quite disturbing.
You want to talk football, fine. You want to provide us with your in-depth analysis on the JETS player personnel, coaching staff, payroll, play-calling, etc., that’s also fine (although exhausting and quite asinine). Any of us can watch “NFL Live” and cut and paste comments like those.
However, when you attack another blogger with a “loser” comment, it’s just sad. Looks like someone might be getting a little coal in the stocking this year…very naughty. I’m not sure why a GIANTS fan such as “Run Osi Run” would be so inclined to express his anger in such a way, especially during the Holiday Season, but let’s keep this blog merry, shall we?
Thank you for your help!
