The Tao of Favre

Brett Favre invited comparison to that other famous New York Jets quarterback today. He wasn’t quite as cocky and he didn’t use the word “guarantee,” but Favre said this team will make the postseason.
I asked him if missing the playoffs would change the way he looked at his decision to come to the Jets. You can listen to the response by clicking on the audio clip below.
“I expect to make the playoffs,” Favre said. “I didn’t expect us to lose the last two games. But I don’t know if too many people expected us to win five straight, maybe our team did. So if we’re able to win five straight and accept that, then we have to be willing to deal with these two games that we’ve lost and figure out a way to turn that around.
“The bottom line is we’re 8-5 and we’re tied for the division. There’s several divisions out there that are similar to ours that it’s up in the air. So there’s three games left. We can’t worry about the remaining two. We have to worry about this one. It will be tough, obviously, especially based on the way we’ve played the last two weeks.
“But I expect us to make the playoffs. I would hope every guy in the locker room feels the same way.”
Favre got pretty philosophical today, and addressed the differences between winning and losing seasons, about the relative strengths of veterans and league newcomers. He said he took his Super Bowl ring with him on the plane to San Francisco and showed it to some of his teammates.
“More or less to prove to them that I did play in a Super Bowl,” Favre said.
Obviously, it didn’t have the desired effect.
He said he’s aware of the sad history of the Jets and playoff runs, and that these two losses might be giving fans ulcers.
“Oh there they go again same old Jets,” Favre said. “I haven’t read that, but I’m assuming that’s (what they are saying). Why wouldn’t you say that? I consider it a challenge.”

On defense, desire and passion are great if it can be focused. The Jets must stop the run and pressure the quarterback to give the offense more possessions.
Opponents have realized that they can stop Favre by sticking like glue to his receivers. Favre and the offensive coordinator need to try some things (e.g. pump fakes, play-action passes, throwing to the outside shoulder on passes down the line, and throwing short of the receiver ) These can work IF there is a clear communication and chemistry between Favre and his receivers. No trick plays please.
It also seems to me that the short dump off passes are wasting Favre’s talent. At that rate it takes three plays to make a first down. At 10 yards a throw Favre only has to connect once for a first down, and he seems quite comfortable at twice that yardage.
Paul, couldn’t agree more. Favre has one of the best arms in the history of the game and it’s still real strong. These dumpoffs are killing me.
And yeah – I recall having the argument with a guy I was coaching a little league baseball team with few years ago. It was true for those 11- and 12-year-olds, and it’s true here: NO TRICK PLAYS! Just play the game.
Don’t be cute – execute!
