Wild game vs. Broncos

November
30

Jets are looking porous against the pass in the first quarter, already a wild game against the Broncos. The Jets failed to score on the opening drive for the first time in seven games, and gave up the first touchdown on a wacky botched reverse.

Jets WR Brad Smith took the direct snap and flipped it to Jerricho Cotchery. Cotchery fumbled, and Broncos S Vernon Fox picked up the ball and ran it in for a touchdown.

The Jets tried to review the play, but as it was explained to them, a live fumble isn’t reviewable if Cotchery never had possession, which was the ruling on the field.

Thomas Jones however, scored on the very next play from scrimmage, a 59-yard run that is the longest of the jets running back’s career. With that run, Jones has 1,014 yards this season, his fourth straight 1,000-plus-yard season. Score 7-7 with 8:21 left.

But the Jets have been giving up yards to the pass, and Eddie Royal scored on a 41-yard pass with 6:44 left in the first, 14-7 Broncos. The Broncos got close enough for a field goal at 1:44 to end the first up 17-7.

Now for another weird play. Jones got the handoff from Brett Favre and seemed to be brought down. Jones landed on Broncos DT Kenny Peterson and rolled over him, without any part of his body or the ball touching the ground. Jones popped up as the Broncos defense stood around and ran the ball 29-yards into the end zone. The review let the play stand, the kick was good and the Jets trailed 17-14 with 12:44 left in the first half.

Reminded me of Leon Washington’s heads up special teams play a few weeks ago, where he stepped out of bounds before grabbing the ball. Buffalo I think. Gotta know the rules inside out and then take advantage.

The Jets were not as successful on defense however. Peyton Hillis scored on a 1-yard run, Favre gets picked and the Broncos again lined up for a 35-yard field goal to end the half up 27-14.

In the first half, the Jets have given up 316 yards of offense (230 passing) and gained 178 (only 66 passing). The Jets have a lot of ground to make up in the second half…

Big holding call against the Broncos C Casey Wiegmann when they were in the red zone. Had the play been clean, Hillis would have added another touchdown to Denver’s scoreline. Instead, rookie CB Dwight Lowery intercepted a later pass in the endzone with about 6 minutes left in the third quarter.

Update 8:30 p.m.: The Jets lose 34-17. I’ll have more from the locker room later tonight but I have not seen Eric Mangini this pissed all season, and Kerry Rhodes—who is usually the most agreeable interview in there—refused to say a word about Broncos QB Jay Cutler because he was so visibly annoyed about the loss.

Jets gave up 357 yards to the pass, and had some play-calling issues—two passing plays on 3rd and 1 and 4th and 1 as I recall. Red zone efficiency? 0-2. Mangini lamented the tackling as well.

Jane, what did you think of the call on the Cotchery fumble Fox picked up and ran in? (CBS is feeding us the Patriots-Steelers game here.)

The Jets radio guys say it was an “atrocious” call – they say Cotchery was down before the ball was out.

3rd and 1, then 4th and 1, at midfield with around 5:00 in the 3rd quarter – play action both times and turned over on downs!

They couldn’t just try handing off twice to Jones or Washington????

  3. pg

Sorry, it was actually 10 min. to go in the 3rd.

    Ugh…..
Can someone take back Mangini’s coach of the week award???

I can hear the air coming out of the figurative balloon right now..

    same old, same old..

    win one, lose one…

When are we playing the RAiders again, oh wait…the bronco’s lost to the raiders.

    sheesh

The Giants top player shoots himself in the leg, what do they do? win by 15.
The Jets opponents lose 4-6 starters..and what do they do?

    stink up the joint..

I can’ wait to hear Mangini’s inciteful remarks after this one.

Why go for 4th and 3, and then 2 minutes later, punt on 4th and 4??

  6. pg

Punting with 8:44 to go and down three scores???

  7. pg

Milo – “Inciteful” – was that intentional? If so, good one.

pg…umm….yes…. of course…it was on purpose..I misspell stuff all the time when a
    joke is in order.
I can’ say Mangini’s remarks too insightful, would you agree?

Favre is having a crappy day. The last time he played in bad weather, the Giants profited.

What happened to all those quick drops from last week??

Why is he throwing into double coverage?? How come Matt Cassel can pick apart the Jet prevent defense, but Favre can’t deal with the back-ups on Denver.

Anyone who thought the jets train was an express, I’m sorry this is VERY much a local.

JUST WHEN YOU THOUGHT IT WAS SAFE TO GO BACK IN THE WATER. AND THIS HAPPENS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This was our wake up call, Jets fans. We should feel fortunate to remain in first place of the AFC East. The Jest won’t take anything for granted after this one. Schotty outsmarted himself early, by calling the gadget in messy conditions. The Jets defenseive braintrust gave the Broncos big gun all day to pick his targets. The coaching staff got too smart for their own good, again. Stick to the obvious and trust your team to attack the obvious weaknesses of the opponent. We make the friggin AFC west look like the best division in the league.

I just drove 1 hour to long island to watch an atrocious game! The Cotchery call was blown, they claimed he did not have possession. lying on top of the ball in your gut is possession.

I never have been on the Mangini bandwagon. Herm could not manage the clock and now we got a guy that can’t make proper in game decisions. How do you go for it on 4th in the 3rd quarter and then punt with 8+ in the 4th and down 3 scores. How do you not set precedence on the line of scrimmage against a horrible run defense. We did the same against Kansas City. When a team can’t stop the run, you just keep running. don’t try to psych them out. How do you not make any attempt to get coles involved in the game earlier on. How do you not blitz and let him sit in the pocket the entire game. We got lucky in New England with this same game plan of not blitzing on the edge.

I hate the giants, but they just take advantage of whatever the weakness is of the other defense. We are still playing scared and hoping a miracle happens, or we get a last ditch play from someone.

    JoeB, Tony V, David,
    I feel your pain fellas…

But as long as the other teams in this division keep losing, we will back into the play-offs.
    Can we beat the STeelers??
    Can we beat the chargers?
Can we beat any of the top 3 teams of the NFC?

    hmmm..

I’ll give the J*E*T*S a pass on this one due to the weather conditions and the blown call by the officials on the lateral play. That set the tempo of the game. He should have been down by contact. I can’t believe they couldn’t review that play. Another blown call by the officials. However this is what I have grown accustome to with this team. We play up to good competition and down to bad competition. Week 17 against Da Fish may be our waterloo. We have been the talk of the league. Lets hear what they have to say about us now.

  14. Tony V

we aren’t the talk of the league anymore.. all the media is coming out with and will continue to come out with the “told you so” about the JETS. Good teams win no mater what the weather condition. The weather did not seem to affect Denver. We did not play our game and dictate. Instead we let the opposing team dictate. They are a bad team so we play waiting for them to shoot themselves in the foot. Instead of creating opportunities, we wait for the other team to blow theirs. We can’t play this way, but unfortunately that is the way we will continue to play as Mangini refuses to bend from his ways. I don’t have the pessimistic perspective as many Jet fans do, but you really got to call it what it is. We can’t get pressure on Qbs and in the NFL you will get picked apart by the average QB. Mangini needs to teach them with a little fire in their belly… not just this strictly cerebral approach to football.

  15. Alex

Down by three scores, why throw all hope out the window by going for it on 4th down instead of kicking a field goal? Extend the game and you still have a chance to win.

MM is taking this well. I like it. And, yes, we’re all feeling the same pain. Run the table, Jets.

  16. pg

joe b, I hear ya. Hang in there!

  17. Erik Sec. 309

We can’t give the Jets a pass because Denver played in the same conditions…..This type of showing is inexcusable. Anyone remember the good feelings from last week?
