FLORHAM PARK, N.J.—When Brett Favre takes the field on Sunday, the 39-year-old Jets quarterback will be going up against another veteran in Titans quarterback Kerry Collins.
Both have stubble flecked with gray, but age hasn’t prevented them from positioning their respective teams well going into the last six games of the season. The Jets are 7-3 as Favre stays in the game he loved too much to give up following his official retirement after last season with the Packers.
“You just appreciate the moment a lot more because you realize it won’t be there forever,” Favre said. “This game could be my last. When you’re 22 years old, you’re looking for that new contract, you’re looking for commercials, you’re looking for whatever. You just always say you’re on scholarship still. As you get older all you want to do is win, get by, go to the next game and win. It’s amazing how you change. I hear people talk about going back to school after they’ve been out of college for a long time, how much better they are at studying or doing their work. To me it’s no different in pro football.”
Collins, a former Giant, is in his third year with the Titans and his team owns the only perfect record left in the league at 10-0.
“With maturity comes better decision-making,” Collins said. “That is what all quarterbacks strive for, is to lean on their experience and hopefully to continue to make better decisions as their career goes on.”
Just as earlier in the season when the Jets played Arizona and veteran quarterback Kurt Warner, Titans coach Jeff Fisher said many will be watching this game to see Collins and Favre.
“I think it’ll be a great matchup,” Fisher said. “Some people have tagged this as it’s going to end up being a shootout. You never know. I think it’ll be a great matchup. Both quarterbacks are capable of making plays. I think it’ll be one that a lot of people are going to want to watch.”
The fact that both teams are hoping to finish with the best record in the AFC and position themselves well in the playoffs is another reason.
