Favre and the AFC East

November
12

Brett Favre gave his weekly State of the Starting Quarterback address yesterday, and the questions centered on whether he has gotten into the AFC rivalries after a career in the NFC.

“It feels different, obviously, because it’s not (Green Bay),” Favre said. “I played 16 years straight in Minnesota, in the Metrodome, and Soldier Field. We had the one exception when we played inĀ  Champaign. That I can’t wipe away. I’ve played in Foxborough before. I’ve played in both stadiums up there. The bottom line is it’s still football. I know exactly what this game means and the weight it carries. I’m well aware of what New England has done over the past decade or so. Once again, it just comes down to football. I’m well aware of what this game means.”

The Jets rarely win this matchup. Bill Belichick has owned his former assistant in the one way it matters: wins. The two don’t speak, and the personal enmity only adds to the tension in this traditional rivalry.

Favre was asked if he felt more pressure knowing that this may the one game in the season he was brought in to win, and he deflected that with his homespun wit.

“I haven’t really thought about it,” Favre said. “That may be true. Then again, it may not be. That may have been why we brought Kris Jenkins in. Let’s put it off on Kris.”

With injuries to QB Tom Brady and LB Adalius Thomas, and the Jets playing consistent and conservative football, this will be an interesting one to watch. Jenkins is playing well, and the running game with Thomas Jones has been reliable. Jones was even nominated for the Fed Ex NFL player of the week. Fans can vote for him or another nominee here.

Here is the injury report from Wednesday.

Jets: TE Bubba Franks (hip), LB David Harris (groin) and S Eric Smith (multiple concussions) did not practice. WR Laveranues Coles (thigh), WR Jerricho Cotchery (shoulder), K Mike Nugent (thigh), WR Brad Smith (shoulder) and LB Cody Spencer (shoulder) were limited.

Patriots: RB LaMont Jordan (calf), CB Lewis Sanders (hamstring), Thomas (forearm) and Terrence Wheatley (wrist) did not participate in practice. LB Eric Alexander (hamstring), RB Sammy Morris (knee), G Stephen Neal (knee) and DE Ty Warren (groin) were limited in practice.

I can’t believe that slimeball Belichik hasn’t signed Justin Miller yet.

Don’t know what to think about Mangini’s “just another game” approach.

On the one hand, it is just another game, in a long season in which anything can happen. On the other hand, the best way for the Jets to position themselves for a good run in the playoffs is to win the division. And it now appears probable the only impediment to them doing so will be the Patriots.

Compare their schedules. After this week, the Jets have one game left against a truly strong opponent – the Titans, next week. Meanwhile, NE has Pitsburgh, Arizona, and Buffalo.

It’s true, the Jets have to play Buffalo again, too. But I think they match up against them a lot better than NE does. And the Jets will host the Bills, whereas the Patriots will have to play in Buffalo, on Dec. 28. And I’m not worried about Denver at NY Jets, either.

So the way I see it, a loss to the Jets this week could be the beginning of the end of the Patriot’s hopes for winning the division. If the Jets win tomorrow, they have a decent shot at finishing 12-4 or 11-5.

Mangini’s right – they still have to show up against Denver, SF, Seattle, etc. But come on – tomorrow’s game probably defines their season.

Excellent point, Cliff. I just emailed the staff asking if Miller passed though waivers.

And pg—such bold predictions! Aren’t you waiting for the other shoe to drop?

  4. pg

No! Look at the improvement in the O-line. Do you realize what a team with Favre can do when they can block and run the ball?

    Yes, it’s all about Favre.

  5. pg

Note, on the other hand, I’m not making any bold predictions about tomorrow. The Patriots are vulnerable and this is probably the perfect time for the Jets to play them, but you know they’ll make it interesting, no matter what.

Walk on water pretty much sums it up.

Favre is as fierce and fearless a competitor as this game has ever seen. Give him a few tools to work with, and look out.

Hope things pan out and you get to see what I mean.

  8. JJ Walker

Me too. If it rains really hard we’ll get to see this walking thing he does… that would rock!

  9. rm

Yeah, the Pats have to lose the NFL MVP and fight other injuries on both sides of scrimmage… The Jets have to acquire record-beaker Favre to have a chance of overtaking the Pats. That’s how pathetic the Jets are.

You guys are funny since Mangini is Belichick’s #1 student. So could we call Mangini, Slimeball Jr.?

  10. pg

Hey, rm – It is what it is!

  11. David

I don’t expect it to happen, but this would be a great night to unleash a secret form and activate Clowney for the game. He’s something New England hasn’t seen and might be able to speed past the secondary for a big play, when they least expect it.

Tired of all the comments at this site and comments to newspaper articles at Jets’ News saying that the Jets needed Brady to go down or pointing to other Pats’ injuries to give the Jets a chance to win.

As if the Pats cried a river all the games Pennington missed because of injuries, not to mention many other Jets’
injuries. You play with what you have. Time for the Pats to get their payback.
