Notes from the Fort

Jets coach Eric Mangini likes to use the music he plays over the loudspeakers to make a point, and this morning, when the players stretched out, they did it to Young Jeezy’s “My President is Black.” (Explicit lyrics, kids.)
Kris Jenkins got pretty philosophical about what the election of Barack Obama meant to him. He has a brother, James Craig McDaniel, who is fighting overseas and said Obama’s composure under pressure was what admirable. But most of all, he voted because he wanted the world to be a better place for his kids.
In his own words:
It’s something Jenkins, who was named the AFC defensive player of the week after his two-sack effort against Buffalo. He said that coming to the Jets and being the NT in the 3-4 defense, he thought he’d be the guy who wasn’t noticed if he did his job well. Instead, this is something he’ll tell the grandkids about.
Jets legend Joe Klecko was out at practice today, showing around two other men who were wearing his #73 jersey.
K Mike Nugent actually put on a uniform today and ran through warmups. TE Bubba Franks practiced on the bike and LB David Harris was no where to be found. Mangini cryptically said Harris was farther away from a return than he was last week. We asked, but he wouldn’t get more explicit. Could mean he suffered a setback with the groin injury or could be getting surgery.
QB Brett Favre spoke, and said he told CBS broadcaster Phil Simms last week that he doesn’t manage games, he plays them. Then Favre smiled and said against the Bills, “I managed the game. As much as I hate to say that.”
He also talked about WR David Clowney and how anxious the 23-year-old is to get in the game. Mangini isn’t playing him even though his right collar bone has healed. Clowney started out at Green Bay, and asked Favre if he’d ever catch a TD pass from him.
“You better hurry up,” Favre said.
In other news, Brad Listorti was cut from the practice squad yesterday to add DL Kareem Brown, who was chopped from the active squad Saturday morning.
