Damien Woody missed his second straight practice for family reasons today, and Jets coach Eric Mangini said he couldn’t go into more details about the nature of the situation.
S Eric Smith, TE Bubba Franks and LB David Harris weren’t in uniform either, although I saw Franks in the locker room earlier and Harris rode the stationary bike. No Smith sighting however and Mangini expressed optimism about the two others playing later this week without mentioning Smith.
Smith sustained two concussions in three weeks, and was taken out of the game last Sunday after a third hit.
The Jets also practiced outside again in the elements—cold and wind. Yesterday it was sleet. Mangini said it was something the Jets needed to get adjusted to.
“The fellows lobbied pretty hard,” Mangini said, “seeing as how we have such a beautiful indoor facility, and we will get there at some point, but I think not right now.”
TE Dustin Keller and OL Rob Turner are two of the players Mangini said might see more time against Buffalo given injuries to Franks and Chris Baker. Keller will be expected to do more blocking, and the first-round draft pick says he’s up for it.
“I just want a chance,” Keller said. “Really, I know eventually that’s going to change.”
The Bills will be a tough opponent, especially since the Jets have had struggled against teams with a losing record.
“It’s good for us to string together a couple wins,” LB David Bowens said, “beat a division opponent regardless of the record, and beat a team that’s got a winning record.
