Jane McManus of The Journal News on the Jets.

Namath and Co.

October
26

Joe Namath and other members of the 1968 Super Bowl champion Jets were in the pressbox this morning reminiscing about the victory. With dimples now joined by deepening smile lines, they talked about the effect the game has had on their lives.

p1_namath_si.jpg Larry Grantham stills wears his Super Bowl ring, and Namath said he is constantly approached by Jets—and Colts—fans, who congratulate him for the win.

Namath remembered how, after his famous guarantee of a win, Weeb Eubank was furious. Until Namath reminded him that Eubank was the one who instilled the players with such confidence in the first place.

Don Maynard, with lambchop sideburns, cowboy boots and skinny blue jeans, said that the players and coaches today don’t have the same skills as players in his day did.

“We needed to win that game,” Namath said. “We felt strongly about the AFL.”

Namath declined to take questions about the Jets current quarterback Brett Favre, and said he just wanted to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the Jet’ one Super Bowl win.

Some pregame notes: Either the Jets will have just a few receivers, ot coach Eric Mangini will have to play the ones on the injured list. TE Bubba Franks and WR David Clowney are on the inactive list. Jerricho Cotchery is questionable with a shoulder injury along with Chris Baker, Laveranues Coles (probable) sustained a concussion last week.

That leaves Wallace Wright, Brad Smith and Chansi Stuckey as the only Jets active and healthy.

With those limitations, it may be a good thing wide receiver Don Maynard is on site.

Other Jets inactives: Mike Nugent, Brett Ratliff (3rd QB), Erik Ainge, David Barrett, Marques Murrell and Kareem Brown. LB Cody Spencer was added to the injury report as questionable with an illness.

For the Chiefs: P Dustin Colquitt (he is replaced by Steve Weatherford), Quinn Gray, Larry Johnson, Erik Walden, Brian De La Puente, Barry Richardson, Jeff Webb, T.J. Jackson.

This team ain’t goin’ nowhere. Thankfully Herm is even more pathetic of a coach than Man non-genius. What a joke.

Mangini should utter two simple words after that near debacle:
    “I resign”
Wouldn’t it be refreshing to hear someone in sports publicly come to grips with their own
incompetence, hold a press conference and simply state:
“It is clear that I am not able to lead this team to a positive result, hence i am resigning, and will not seek any compensation. I apologize to the fans and to the team”

Why he was passing against a team that is worst against the run in the NFL is baffling.
In the fourth quarter, the punter placed a kick on the two, only to have a jet push it into the End zone – result, chiefs get it on their 20.

    Pathetic.

That game was simply awful….3rd and an inch and we go into the shotgun?......baffling. Joe B stated at the start of the season that Favre was a mistake. I fought him on it, but I am realizing that he was right. His mistakes are awful and they are killing us. We are lucky that Leon is on the team.

    Erik – totally right on.

The irony is, I heard on the radio that Leon was selected with the pick the Jets got from the Chiefs when Herm defected.

    small world huh?

Erik Sec. 309..I wish I was wrong. But watching Favre over the last few years I began to get frustrated with him. He would just throw the ball up for grabs when he was pressured. He had his days, but now they are over. Unfortunately he is going to end up like many of these athletes who retire and than think they can turn it on whenever they want. I loved Joe Willy, but when I watched him play for the LA Rams and get destroyed it broke my heart. Favre should have stayed retired after going to the NFC Championship game. I stated earlier that he would probably have about 22-24 TDs and 20+ INTs. That doesn’t get you to the play-offs. It’s time to see what Clemens or Ratliff can do for us. Also, I think all of the top 10 picks in the draft are either starting or getting significant playing time. All except Ghoston. This organization needs a complete turnover. Unfortunately we just did that 3 years ago. Been a JETS fans since they were the TITANS. Don’t know how much longer I can take this.

Joe B – Ratliff is much better than Clemens, and should be considered #2.

The turn over thats needed is the General Manager. Consider all the bone head coaching choices: coslet, Kotite,Herm, or competent coaches we couldn’t keep – Parcells/Belechik

Starting to remind me of the knicks, although the knicks were in the finals as recently as 98(got smoked by Spurs), and a few Starks buckets away from a championship in 94.
These Jets are much farther away

Cool blog. You might want to add some anecdotes in your posts in order to make them more interesting.
