Looking at the bright side

October
26

After an atrocious 28-24 win over the visiting Chiefs and their third-string quarterback, here is what Jets coach Eric Mangini said to start his press conference.

“We were pleased with the way we finished,” Mangini said, “with being able to come down and score with one minute lest and take the lead after we lost it on a turnover.”

As a matter of fact, if you’d listened to the first few minutes of that presser, you’d have little idea that the Jets nearly lost what amounted to a homecoming game against a 1-5 team they were favored over by like 13 points.

A game that had quarterback Brett Favre trying to tackle Chiefs CB Brandon Flowers after a wounding interception returned 91 yards for a touchdown. Favre missed Flowers, and sat for a few seconds alone on the Jets sideline with the home crowd booing until Kellen Clemens finally walked over and gave him a hand up.

But then Favre redeems himself with a 15-yard touchdown throw to Laveranues Coles with a minute left to win the game.

More items of interest:

  • LG Alan Faneca fell on Favre’s arm in the first quarter and backup Clemens began to warm up, but Favre didn’t miss a series. LB David Harris sustained a hip injury in the second quarter and rode the bike on the sideline. S Kerry Rhodes went out briefly with a neck injury, but returned to the game. RB Jesse Chatman had an apparent left leg injury in the fourth quarter. FB Tony Richardson needed stitches on a finger on his left hand in the fourth quarter and did not return. TE Chris Baker aggravated a hip injury prior to the game and didn’t play. OL Rob Turner went in for him.
  • Coles sustained a concussion last week but was in the game yesterday. Mangini said the team had gone to an outside specialist for a second opinion and was taking the injury seriously. Coles was asked if he had any say over whether or not he plays. “I don’t know,” Coles said. “I have to look at the collective bargaining agreement and see if I do. That’s one of those things they tell you, you can play. And you say you can’t play, I don’t know how that works.”
  • Former Jets coach Herm Edwards talked to current coach Eric Mangini after the games. It was the second time Edwards has returned with the Chiefs to play the Jets. “I told him, ‘Good job,’” Edwards said. “They’re a good football team. I talked to a lot of the players. They’ve got a good football team.”
  • The R & B singer who performed the National Anthem yesterday may have been unfamiliar to some in the crowd, but RB Thomas Jones knew him well. The artist, Myko, is signed to Jones’ Outta Pocket Entertainment, and his song “Late Night Creep” has been getting play on local airwaves.
  • Leon Washington had another sold game, with three carries for 67 yards, three catches for 34 yards including an 18-yard touchdown catch in the first quarter for a touchdown. The 5-foot-8, 202-pound RB also returned three punts for 71 yards and four kickoffs for 102 yards. “I know a lot of people look at Leon and look at his size,” 349-pound NT Kris Jenkins said. “That’s a big man, just the rest of his body is invisible. You can’t see it.”

Another bad game for the offense. The pass to LC for the winning TD was terrible. Only a great catch by LC made Favre look good. If the defender had kept his feet it could very easily been intercepted and returned the length of the field. Favre is just throwing the ball up for grabs. An earlier pass should have been intercepted for a TD, but was dropped. Favre now leads the league in one catagory (INTs). And why is it that young QBs feast on us. In case nobody has noticed, The Dolphins have beaten the Chargers & Patriots (2 teams that beat the JETS) and our next opponent the Bills. They have the best Division record right now and have looked very good in recent games. If we lose to the Bills next week, which I think we will. It will be time to see what we have for the future. Even the fans at the stadium were booing Favre.

I’ve decided that Brian Schottenheimer is the Wile E. Coyote of offensive coordinators.

Not that I’m exactly thrilled with the way the coaching has been going, but it has been reported that the reason we didn’t run yesterday was becasue Chris Baker was a last minute scratch.

Is Mangini giving the players the day off today?

PLEASE…There is no BRIGHT SIDE to this game. It was a LUCKY win. Bad pass for the winning TD. And so what if Chris Baker was a scratch. He doesn’t dictate our run game. This coaching staff in bending over backwards to let Brett throw the ball whenever he wants. Aside from the St.L game he has 9 TDs & 10 INTs. Time for a change.

Anyone who thinks the winning TD pass was bad doesn’t know much about the game.

pg..If you think that was a good pass you don’t have a clue. If the defender didn’t fall down it could have been 6 the other way. And Coles had to reach back behind himself with one hand. I’ve probably forgotten more about the game than you will ever know.

I suggest you take another look at the video – the highlight reel is at nfl {dot} com. Patterson, the defender, is ahead of Coles and his momentum is carrying him into the end zone. The pass is thrown perfectly so that Coles can get it and Patterson can’t. Patterson falls down attempting to reverse direction to get to a ball he has no play on.

Go ahead and pretend the Jets lost, though, if it makes you feel better.

the Jets won. This is undeniable. But anyone who says “A win is a win”, is just Parroting the Mangini mantra. You may also believe they gave “110%!”
But the fact is, in the last 2 games, against two of the worst teams in the league, the Jets are LUCKY to escape 1-1.
Can you pick any aspect of the game which impressed, other than Leon Washington? After spending so much, trading for Favre, we had, perhaps ignorantly raised our expectations.

The process of lowering them, is often painful for the fans, but appears inevitable with this team. Of course a sound thrashing of the Bills would change that.

pg…You sound just like I use to sound. Making excuses and calling bad plays good if they work for us. Being a New Yorker all we saw of Favre were the highlights of his career. However with the NFL network you got to see more of his game than just the highlights like the heave in Philly playoff game and the one against the Giants in OT. . Last year he had a good season because the division he played in sucked. Plus he caught SD & NYG early in the season. Granted he was a very good QB, but now he is only padding some of his career stats. jonathan swift hit it right on the head…[Can you pick any aspect of the game which impressed, other than Leon Washington? After spending so much, trading for Favre, we had, perhaps ignorantly raised our expectations.] If you think this team is any good, so be it,you are entitled to your opinion. And if you think that pass was meant to be where it was, think on. However anyone who knows anything about football knows that was a bad pass. The 4 teams they beat have a combined record of 8-21. Don’t worry, after a few more of these games the season will be over. Even if they are lucky enough to beat Buffalo you are still looking at a sub par team.

To be clear, I think the Jets played poorly overall and have a long way to go.

But that was a perfect pass.

  12. TC

The pass was thrown the way it was to cole’s for a reason. It was intended that way!!!! The reason Favre had a good year last year wasn’t because of the division,It was because the Packer’s had a good team and very good wide reciever’s…......

  13. Alex

I’ll weigh in on the side of perfect pass. Coles was expecting it where it was and reeled it in when it was there. The defender had no chance, considering it a sure fade route. Coles sold it really well.

  14. miloslav Mecir

How was that pass on the previous drive, down around the 9 yard line, you know the one
which was picked off, and returned for 6 points for the Chiefs???

if he throws the same number of pics as TD’s it would be silly to just look at the TD’s..

  15. pg

I’m pretty sure no one is saying the INTs were good. I was responding to a specific assertion here that the winning TD was actaully a badly thrown ball that should have been intercepted.
