Fort Favre

Jets quarterback Brett Favre easily gets the headlines coming out of today’s practice at the Jets HQ, Fort Florham. He spoke frankly and at times eloquently about the last game he played in Oakland, just a day after learning that his father died. When the Jets head back there for the 4:15 game, it will be the first time he’ll return.

“I think from the time I found out, I really felt like I was going to play, ‘cause i knew we really needed to win the ballgame,” Favre said. “It’s not like the game meant nothing to us. So it was a question of could I play and help this team win, was really the most important thing to me.
“I knew my dad would want me to play, all those things. But the shock of it. I mean, really, when I got out for the pregame the next day, I’d forgotten everything I studied all week.”
Somehow, Favre got his head into the game and had what he considers the best game of his career. We’ll have more on that for the papeer tomorrow.
Favre also addressed the Jets history, which was similar in some ways to Green Bay, he said, before he got there. The sense that, no matter what happens, there is probably disaster on the horizon.
“It was almost like they anticipated something bad happening,” Favre said. “It’s kind of hard to change that thinking. I mean, I haven’t heard that. I haven’t discussed it with anyone. But I think good things happen when you start believing good things will happen.”
That kind of mind over matter may be simplistic, but it’s not just a matter of going I think I can all the way up the train tracks. The Jets have also gotten LB Calvin Pace, NT Kris Jenkins, OL Alan Faneca—critical pieces who really are making a different when it comes to the team stats.
Favre brings with me the sense that anything can happen. Even when he throws two picks against Cincinnati, the Jets now have the ability to pick up yardage fast enough to limit the damage.
So, Jets fans, is there more optimism here now? Do you feel good enough about Favre and the pieces around him this year to relax a little more?
Or are you waiting for the other shoe to drop?
Vintage Favre from 1992:
In other news: Favre said he wouldn’t commit to another year at this point… OL Kyle DeVan was signed to the practice squad. … Jets coach Eric Mangini said that Eric Smith should be medically fine to play this week after serving a one-game suspension for a helmet-to-helmet hit on Cardinal wide receiver Anquan Boldin.
Players of the week: Offense—D’Brickashaw Ferguson. Defense—Sean Ellis. Special Teams—Wallace Wright. Practice—David Clowney.

Have you seen this? Post-game with Favre, Sept. 20, 1992. The interview with Brett begins at about 3:30. Note the question about how long they expect Majkowksi to be out – Favre hasn’t missed a start since. Oh, and Bob Costas tell us how to pronounce the last name:

That is wild pg. I mean, when was the last time you heard Bob Costas say, ‘Brett, OJs got a question for you.”
Chills.
Jane,
Please dont address all of us as “Jets fans”
I am not a Jets fans. But I am a fan of this blog!
Asked anybody who watched Favre’s historic OAK game- eerie.
ABOUT THOSE JETS:
As for the 2 picks against Cinci, one was a good throw; it just got bobbled away. And the fluke fumble at the start is the unpredictable nature of turnovers. Cinci just didnt capitalize on those breaks, and Jets came back. If the Jets can run the ball, then play some D, they can at least make the playoffs. NE is hurt and BUFF can be beaten.
GO JETS
I know that it is human nature, but please don’t start asking Brett if he is returning next year! First of all, it is only game seven, so a lot can happen. Having said that, if he stays healthy and the Jets play well, I could see him returning. I don’t know where the comments come from of his playing with another team, since the Jets have a contract for him to 2010. They would need to trade or cut him. I remember when Favre signed this extension, and the commentators were saying that there was no way that he would play until then. Brett wants to be wanted, so the Jets management will be very important to his return. Unfortunately, Ted Thompson did not want Brett back and was pushing him out the door for the past two years.
Just to expand a little on what DC Packer Fan is saying – I think Favre equates “feeling wanted” with feeling like the organization is committed to putting a winning team on the field. If the Jets make it clear their primary goal is to be a championship calibre team, Brett will want to come back and play, as long as he feels like he can still get it done. This is not a guy whose life revolves around clubbing and hanging out with Madonna and having a different Rolex and a different Escalade for every day of the week. He restructered his deal in Green Bay to give them flexibility and he’d probably do the same for the Jets if he felt like he had a shot at getting back to the Super Bowl.
