Favre’s Green Bay house for sale

Brett Favre really is a Jet, the Green Bay Press Gazette has a story that his house is for sale there. Here is what gets me: it’s on the market for $475 K. Now as a sportswriter based in Westchester, who makes significantly less than Favre’s $12 million a year, I am shocked that his home is so… modest. This is not a setting for MTV Cribs. Where is the faux Grecian facade? The circular driveway and lavish fountain? The petting zoo??

For the love of heaven he has hosta in the front yard. Hosta! Even so, pop that house in your average Lower Hudson Valley neighborhood and the lawn alone would cost more than that, much less the bricks.
The picture above ran in the Green Bay Gazette. The house is listed at 3,000 square feet and has three baths.
Favre ended up renting in Morristown, N.J., and admitted to a little sticker shock when he started looking for a home and told a broker he wanted to spend $800 or so a month. He soon found out what he could get for that.
“You ain’t in Kansas any more,” Favre said. “Looking for a tent.”
UPDATE: Thanks to a reader, Barb, who sent me a picture of the REAL Favre home in Hattiesburg, Miss. I guess we can see where the money goes. Sure, you can slum it during the season when you’ve got the compound waiting for you!

I can almost see Favre showing the MTV film crew around now, opening the door to the master suite, “And this is where the magic happens…”
OnMilwaukee.com posted similar aerial shots identified as the Favre home… While I was checking that out, I ran across an Oregon company that makes synthetic turf and has a testimonial from Favre:
“The putting green you installed at our new home in Hattiesburg is great. It’s the closest thing to a real grass putting green I have putted on.”
And there are the Greek columns I would expect a quarterback of Favre’s stature to have. So Greek columns, a putting green, 400 acres, that’s more like it.
For a minute I was afraid that he really was just a regular guy!

You know The Jets are on a bye when this is what you see on new york sports sites
Albany, NY – Times Union Center officials are pleased to announce that arena football will be played this spring and summer in Albany. Capital Cities Professional Football, LLC has re-branded its arenafootball2 team as the Albany Firebirds. The Firebirds are returning to the Capital Region this season thanks to a number of people as a deal was negotiated between SMG, Albany County, the Times Union and Walter Robb, owner of the Albany River Rats.
“Albany’s team is back and I couldn’t be happier,†said Firebirds owner Walter L. Robb. “This has been a process of working with supportive partners who were all interested in being able to provide our community with top notch professional sports entertainment. Our staff is excited to begin the rebirth of one of the City’s most storied teams and I look forward to greeting all of our fans when we kick-off in 2009.â€
“Bringing the Firebirds back will be like bringing the Dodgers back to Brooklyn. We can revisit the Firebird glory years of the 90’s. We are thrilled that our efforts with Walter Robb, the Times Union and SMG will bring the Firebirds back.†– Albany County Executive Mike Breslin
I am not positive, but I thought that this was Favre’s second home in GB. He had a bigger house in the past, but sold it and downsized when his older daughter stayed in MS. He and his family were spending less time in GB so he went with a simpler house. Peter King said that the Favre house in MS is incredible, but that must be due to his wife’s taste. As you can see from how he dresses, Favre is not a money person. He could care less. That is why all of the negative comments about his taking the GB offer for $25M were so bogus.
DC Packer Fan is correct – Favre had a McMansion in Green Bay which he sold a few years back.
This probably doesn’t deserve too much analysis, but hey, the Jets are off, so here are 2 thoughts:
– Favre’s decision to sell at this time strikes me as kind of momentous, emotionally speaking. He and the Packers organization have gone out of their way to emphasize that he’ll “always be a Packer.” If he intended to have a close relationship with the team after he retires (permanently, that is), you’d think he’d hang onto that house so he has a convenient place to stay.
– This reminds me of a famous practical joke Favre played on someone in the Packers organization (one of the coaches, I think) a few years ago: He swiped a for-sale sign and planted it in the victim’s front yard. Soon the entire town was abuzz with rumors that the person had been fired or was taking a job with the Vikings or something . . . .
That all makes sense about this being a 2nd GB home. And it does make it seem like things will be strained in the immediate future when Favre really does retire. Guess he won’t be spending a lot of nights up there for a while, or in any front office capacity.
