The Jets will get an extra roster spot when S Eric Smith is suspended for one game, and today they signed LB Brandon Renkart. Coach Eric Mangini said WR David Clowney and K Mike Nugent should be ready to return in one to two weeks, on a progressive basis.
Based on his six passing TD performance against Arizona, Jets QB Brett Favre has been nominated for league player of the week. You can vote for Favre (or another worthy player) here. Results will be announced later this week.
And Favre announced today that he is green! In the environmental sense! OK, he didn’t come out and say it but read between the lines on this Freudian slip. The context is being asked if, as a withered old quarterback, he needs the bye week for a long nap. (Perhaps it was put more nicely, but that was the upshot)
“Mentally sometimes as you get older, you need to, as you say, recycle, recharge the batteries.”
See?? Not only does he recycle, but he uses rechargable batteries! Go green, Brett!
RB Jesse Chatman (No. 22) got the ball today in practice, his first back with the team after being suspended for testing positive for a masking agent, in violation of the NFL performance- enhancing drugs policy. He knew the suspension was evident even as he had 29 carries in a preseason game against Washington.
On Smith’s injury, Mangini said that the team has taken baseline tests of players in the off-season, and would see how this head injury has affected him. Mangini said he anticipated Smith being ready to play after his suspension.
“We will monitor it throughout the course of the week and follow up with tests to see progress, no progress, that type of thing,” Mangini said.
NFL standards on concussion management state that a team does not have to come and publicly with the medical diagnosis of a player, but that it must treat the condition and that “medical decisions must always override competitive considerations.”
