Graham out, Chatman back, E. Smith speaks

A lot happened today at the Jets practice facility. Going into the bye week 2-2, coach Eric Mangini released punter Ben Graham, signed Will Montgomery to the active roster and released RB Paul Raymond through that rotating door.

Coach Eric Mangini said the Jets decided to give punter Reggie Hodges the opportunity they offered before he got injured.

“When we signed Hodges we liked him coming out,” Mangini said. “We like the things he did here. It’s unfortunate sort of his early stages there, not being able to have that opportunity.”

S Eric Smith spoke about the helmet-to-helmet collision with Cardinal WR Anquan Boldin with :27 seconds left in the 56-35 win that sent both players to the ground. He said he can’t remember the play, and only watched a highlight after being told that Boldin was OK. He didn’t think it was a “dirty” play as some have speculated, and expected the NFL to release a decision in the next day or two.

“I really don’t remember the play, leaving the field,” Smith said. ”…Things are a little fuzzy.”

S Abram Elam talked to Boldin’s mother Sunday night and was told Boldin was released from the hospital that night.

“We grew up together, playing against each other in high school,” Elam said.

RB Jesse Chatman, who was suspended for four games after testing positive for a masking agent, was back at the Jets facility this afternoon, hoping to sneak into the locker room without running into reporters. But we had him surrounded and ultimately he said he was glad he got it over with.

”(Mangini) was very supportive and he and what happened and as long as you tell him the truth he’ll stand by you,” Chatman said.

Chatman said he and his agent had been fighting the veracity of the positive test, but ultimately decided to accept the suspension even if it meant some people will believe he used a performance-enhancing drug.

“I’m not a cheater and I never have been,” Chatman said.

Maybe Chatman can prove to be better than than Thomas Jones….Jones does nothing particularly spectacular. I expected more when we got him from Chicago (granted the O line was awful last year).
