PSL Rally

August
24

Maybe it was because they were situated in Siberia, between the steel frame of the new Jets and Giants Stadium and the  racetrack, but the rally against PSLs held yesterday before the Jets-Giants preseason game drew a very slight crowd.

The organizers, and those who showed up, were vocal however. Jets season ticketholders used the plan the Giants released as a guide for what they could expect to pay. Steve Kern, who organized the event. Said right before the Giants announcement he got a Jets survey asking a bunch of innocuous questions about what kind of foods he likes followed by a few to gauge what he’d be willing to pay in a PSL.

Kern said he wished he’d gotten the survey before they decided to build a new stadium for the luxury box profits. He doesn’t give a fig for the new bathrooms and scoreboards if it means he has to pay thousands for the privilege of a new stadium.

New Jersey assemblyman Anthony Chiappone said he will introduce legislation to bar the implementation on PSLs on fans. We have more on the issue in today’s notebook. One point he made was that the advantage in buying a PSL is only in the reselling, when the seat-owner can make a profit. Since most fans want to keep the seats, there isn’t an advantage there. He also said thatin 15 years the teams could build a new stadium, rendering the current PSLs null and void.

Jets owner Woody Johnson said that Jets ticketholders might have the option of buying their seats for concerts and other events at the stadium, which given the secondary ticket broker sites could be marginally profitable for fans.

Given how this issue affects anyone who owns season tickets for the Jets and Giants, and the sums being demanded ($1,000 to $20,000 per seat according to the Giants plan), I was surprised there weren’t more people at the rally. From what I’ve seen on this and the Giants board, the fans are angry about PSLs, and the 50,000 or so at the game last night will be directly affected. So why did only 30 people show up to talk about it?

One Response to “PSL Rally”

Why did so few fans turn out?

Because we know the owners dont care about us. It wont mean anything to them having to listen to us complain.
Its their business and they can charge whatever they want to view their product. Also, PSL’s arent a new idea. Half the NFL has it, so why should we be one of the teams without it? Its a money grab pure and simple.

Im sad I will be giving up the seats I’ve had for 20 years, but it is what it is. I cant afford to pay for the right to buy tickets. I’ve got a lot more important things to pay for.

I’ve already accepted the fact I will be losing my seats. Its like losing a family member to an illness… I will enjoy my time with the seats as long as possible, and when its taken away from me, I will mourn the passing but wont grieve for long since I have accepted the inevitable fate.
