Favre Speaks, Part Deux

The white picket barriers today were up just off the turf Brett Favre addressed the Jets media for the second time since arriving in Hempstead. The former Packers quarterback said he can’t wait to get into the game on Saturday when the Jets host the Redskins, and that playing is the whole reason he got back into football.

“Believe me the system’s not easy and I’m not going to sit here and tell you I’ve got it down,” Favre said. “I’ve got just about enough plays down, to run those plays Saturday. And how it turns out I’ve got no idea.”
As for practice itself, here’s the bad: Favre through another interception today in practice, safety Abram Elam picked off an underthrown ball intended for Laveranues Coles. Favre said it was the kind of pass that would improve with better communication that comes with time. He also had to do another penalty lap with center Nick Mangold.
And the good: Later, he hit Brad Smith with a cresting 45-yard pass that the receiver took another five yards.
Favre’s arm is sore, and he woke up this morning saying “what in the heck am I doing?” but overall said he was fitting into the system, with the players on the team and happy to be back on the field—even with the added scrutiny (see fishbowl for analogy).
“I wondered this morning when I got up what in the heck am I doing?†Favre said. “But the answer to that question is I love to play. I hate to study, at times I hate to practice, but I love to play. And I know I need to study I know I need to practice, I know how important it is—doesn’t mean I have to like it. And the question I have to ask myself is am I willing to do that? And the answer is yes. There’s no substitute for Sundays.”
He worked a little with Coles today, spending a little time on the artificial turf away from the main group to go over routes. Coles is still sensitive about Chad Pennington’s departure, since the two have been friends for years, but the two spoke to each other at several points, even addressing the receivers feelings about his friend.
“I said, ‘I’m not here to take Chad’s spot or replace him,’” Favre said. ”’…Whatever you had with Chad, may that continue.’”
Notes: Shaun Ellis is still working out on the sidelines with a hand injury, but coach Eric Mangini said he should be ready for the regular season. … Dustin Keller took a lap today for a false start penalty. … Some Jets watchers have wondered if Brett Ratliff might move up on the depth chart, but Kellen Clemens is the No. 2 QB, said Mangini. … David Clowney left practice early, and we are waiting for an update on him. Update: Clowney practiced with the team for the second practice of the day.
And on a personal note: I watched “Something About Mary” last night. I laughed so hard I was afraid I’d wake the kiddies, but Brett Favre—not a good actor. Terrific sport, playing himself like that, but acting chops not so much. I think his performance may be better when you remember it rather than actually watching it, because then his wooden delivery doesn’t get in the way.

To say everyone is not concerned about the interceptions would be a lie. But in 5 days of camp he has thrown more touchdowns than Chad and Kellen had in the whole first part of camp, and that was a competition.
No More under 17 points per game , Hello 30’s Woo Hoo….
Can we give the guy a break!!!! He’s learning his receivers and a new system. He’s going to have interceptions- and yes he will have them during the regular season also. I have not missed seeing him play since he arrived in Green Bay. His “gunslinger” mentality has won a heckuva lot more games than it has lost.
So get used to some interceptions, because they will happen- but also get used to some risky throws that will spell victory for the Jets. Sit back and enjoy.
John: I’m with you! I can’t believe the negative comments on the interceptions when he is learning an entire new system after 17 years. Give him a break indeed. It is so funny to read all the press articles on the strength of his arm since GB fans and players took this for granted. I am sure that Rodgers is going to be fine, but he is sure boring to watch. I’ll take Brett any time. Maybe it’s only one year, but treasure it. If I recall, the Jets were 4 and 12. Jets fans are so lucky to have him. I can’t believe some of their ridiculous criticisms. If they were 13 and 3 last year, then maybe I could understand it. I wish he were back in GB.
If people are that upset about losing Chad for Brett than maybe they should root for the fish. I was at practice yesterday and the 3 long passes that Brett completed in stride to his receivers were more exciting than any passes that took place during all of last year’s regular season. I have to agree with some previous bloggers – forget about a couple of practice interceptions. He can only get better from here until opening night in Miami. I can’t wait!
Brett Favre has a tired arm. When he announced his retirement last year, he most likely didn’t train in the off-season like he would have if he knew he was coming back. No mini-camp, no conditioning. He was out making commercials. At his age he needed all the preparation he could get. This may end up being a disaster for this organization. I am a JET fan and I will root for them every game. However I don’t see him making that much of a difference. Our recievers have to change thier game, the RBs probably wont get as many reps, after we went out and got 2 OLs to improve our running game. And by the time we move into Woodys new stadium we will have a 1st year QB, an old OL, probably a new coach and a new system. Typical JETS
What you sound like is a typical Jet fan….Let yourself be happy. Like I’ve said before, this move was made for this year, not 1-2 years from know. I know it’s hard, but try to be excited. I actually think that the running game will see the biggest improvement because of Favre. Now, teams have to respect the deep ball and can’t simply crowd the line. THINK GOOD THOUGHTS.

Actually I am a long suffering JET fan. I was at the first NY Titan home game in 1960 and a season ticket holder since 1965. This is a franchise that seems to get superstars when they are on the downslide. If you look in the NFL record book you won’t find the NY Jets with any positive records. Remember, this is the guy who took a seat to allow Micheal Strahan to break Mark Gastineaus sack record. Lets talk 10 games into the season and see what he does. This is a 3rd place schedule for a play-off QB. Personally, I hope he does well. I just question his motivation and preparation to come back for one season.
I will make this short Joe- Please don’t question his motivation or his preperation- that’s insulting.
If he has a poor year (which I don’t think he will) it won’t be for lack of motivation or preperation.
Have you not followed his career at all??

To who, him or the JET fans. Lets wait and see for 10 games and than we can talk about it. Is he trying to prove something to the Packers organization. Iam just not sold.
PS…I would love to eat crow on this issue
We spent money to solidify the line – a move that we desperately needed to make. It was not “wasting” money on superstars. Yes, Favre is a star. 75% of his best is better than 100% of Pennington. Sorry, it’s true. Try to think a little less glass half empty. The Jets are trying to make moves that will reverse the course of the franchise.
Like I said. Lets see how we both feel about this after 10 games. If you are going to be happy with 75% of Brett, don’t expect much.
