Day II: It’s a wrap

The buzz today was Brett Favre. Mike Tannenbaum and Eric Mangini did not address—or dismiss—the early report on espn.com that the Jets had requested permission to talk to the three-time MVP.
More telling was Chad Pennington, who said that Tannenbaum told him after practice that there were stories that the Jets were interested in Favre and that the team had gotten a phone call about the matter.
Pennington said he didn’t think Tannenbaum was refuting the reports, and wasn’t going to freak out about it. OK, I’m paraphrasing. But he did say this: “This isn’t my first time at the rodeo.”
Tannenbaum’s piece of information that the Jets were call-ee rather than caller—which he did not reiterate for reporters—adds to the confusion of who wants who.
Right now the rumor mill is in full force, and depending on the source you can find reports that Favre isn’t interested in the Jets, that no team is interested in Favre and that Favre will or won’t play for the Packers this Sunday when camp opens.
In other news: Danny Woodhead had to be carried off the field with an apparent leg injury. The Jets wouldn’t comment on specifics, but he was helped off by Thomas Jones and a team trainer. The NCAA rusher from Chadron State (what up Nebraska!) had performed well up to that point, getting quite a few reps. Say what you will about the future of a 5-foot-7 running back in the NFL, but Woodhead is still a Jet. And there is no room for charity spots on the 80-man roster this season.
I wasn’t able to watch all of practice today with the breaking Favre stuff, but I thought Pennington and Kellen Clemens looked about even.
And one last observation: As slim as Brett Ratliff’s hopes of being the starting QB are at this moment, how rough if he is not only third string—but the No. 2 Brett at his position?!?
