So we have the quarterback competition story in today’s paper. This is obviously just the first installment in what will be an ongoing saga. Both of the players (in the AP photo left) talked yesterday after practice.

Chad Pennington: “Everyone knows there were discussions at the combine. After everything is said and done, this is the best place for me to be. Looking at the situation, I feel good about it. I feel really good about how I prepared this offseason. I really tried to take a look at some things, physically and mentally, to get better and to become a better quarterback so I can take new steps.”
Kellen Clemens: “Well it’s been clearly communicated, there’s a quarterback controversy right now, an awesome competition, which is going make Chad better, it’s going make myself better, and in turn it’s going to make the team better. So we’re excited about it, were out there working hard, and getting ready for 08.”
What do you think? Strong arm versus accuracy? Potential versus experience?

I’d rather see Pennington as the starter. If it goes well in this coming season we continue with him but if not we need to draft a Quarterback in next years draft. I don’t see Clemens at least at this point as a starter, maybe he’ll surprise in this years camp but if not Pennington is the better choice. My 0.02 cents, my opinion.
(Correction – my 0.02 cents – my 2 cents). With the Jets signing many players to make the line much better and hopefully giving the Quarterback a little more time to make the plays, it figures Pennington will be able to go and make better plays than Clemens can, we saw them both last year and both didn’t play as good as needed or even close. Pennington has an advantage of experience, that’s why (besides that I think he is the better player) I think Pennington will win the starting position over Clemens.
Excellent article in today’s paper.
I’d like to see Clemens get the nod and have Mangini stick w/him, unless he clearly is in over his head after week 8. We have to know whether Clemens can do the job or not and move on if he busts.
Chad is a great B/U QB at this point in his career, but his pitiful arm strength is too much of a liability for him to take us deep into the playoffs, so let’s not waste any valuable time this season and let Clemens get his shot.
Clemmens didn’t get a fair opportunity to showcase his skill set. He was starting for the first time with an offensive line that wouldn’t hold up in the arena league. Now we’ll find out what he’s made of. There are no such excuses for him this year. It would be nice to see a quarterback that can actually spread the field and make the defense respect the long ball. Chad will eventually make a great qb coach. He is smart and knows what should be done, but he just can’t physically do it himself.
Clemmens is a stiff, and we all know it. If he was even
average, Pennington would be off this team right now.
Its depressing to think that Man-Genius will take 2 steps back, and put in the “10-yard-and-under” rocketless armed
Pennington. And how many concussions does he really want to endure?
I’m sure the other teams are licking the chops and getting ready to crowd the line as we speak.
