Rhodes gets five-year extension

After spending Woody Johnson Jr.’s college fund on a bevy of outside free agents, the Jets have started locking up their own guys. Yesterday it was Kerry Rhodes getting a new five-year deal worth a reported $33.5 million, $20 million guaranteed. He would have been a free agent after the season. The fourth-year safety and the team had been negotiating for months but were always far apart.
Rhodes was probably the best player on the team. Needless to say, it’s good to have him back. He’s started all 48 games since being drafted in the fourth round, making 10 interceptions, eight sacks, and 213 tackles (71 per year). He’s a deadly weapon on safety blitzes. Seems like when he rushes the passer he always either takes him down or breaks up the play.
His extension follows a guarantee of Laveranues Coles’s two remaining years at $11 mil. The clubhouse aught to be satiated at this point. Those were the two vets squabbling with management. Now that they’ve been taken care of the Jets can all be one big happy family.

Nice to see the Jets giving money to their good players. If the Dolphins started speaking to Jake Long, maybe the Jets should start speaking to McFadden and others, you know to avoid problems after the draft and make the draft pick easier and faster.
