Anonymous Jets lash out at spending spree

March
6

Interesting story in The Daily News today about two unnamed players ripping management for throwing money at free agents. They’re angry/jealous that existing Jets won’t be treated as well as the guys they’re bringing in.

“You pay guys you don’t even know, and the guys in the locker room – the guys that have your back – you don’t give a damn about them,” one player said Tuesday, speaking on the condition of anonymity. “It shows where the loyalty is.”

Why free agent signings automatically mean existing players won’t be taken care of is a mystery. Especially so soon after the signings. Let things settle, John Doe. Once the team starts cutting deserving players to make cap room then we’ll talk. So far the only players getting cut are ones who weren’t getting the job done. I’m looking at you Anthony Clement.

You figure John Doe has to be a guy who’s unhappy with his contract. Laveranues Coles, Kerry Rhodes, and Chris Baker are all possibilities. Coles has always been outspoken. You could argue that makes him the likeliest suspect or unlikely since he’s not one to hide.

Another Jet complained about the Vilma trade, saying the team is trading off young for old. I say who cares if a guy’s young if he wasn’t performing. And who cares if a guy’s old if he is performing.

This kind of backstabbing before a season is not a good sign at all. You can’t have the locker room divided and resentful before the new guys have a chance to ingratiate themselves. Mangini needs to find out who this is and put a stop to it. If that means trading the bad egg then so be it.

Robertson deal fell through

March
4

It appears the Jets and Bengals had a deal in place to send Robertson to Cincinnati for fourth and fifth round picks. It was contingent on him agreeing to retructure his contract, which counts for a number against the cap that befits a player twice his stature. Cincy and his agent Hadley Englehard couldn’t agree on a figure so the deal fell through. As of yesterday they were still in talks but it’s not looking good.

Incidentally this is the second time the Bengals tried to deal for a defensive lineman only to have the deal fall through. They first tried to get Shaun Rogers from Detroit, but he ended up going to Cleveland.

The Jets desperately need to get something done here. Dewayne has no role with Jenkins in the fold. Not unless they wanted to turn him back into a defensive end. Which I don’t see happening. I think the organization is done with him. And after nearly being traded it’s going to be hard for player and team to smile at each other and pretend like nothing happened. Plus he gets a roster bonus in June that they don’t want to pay. Figure he’s gone before the draft, whether it’s to Cincy or not.

Showing the money

March
3

I guess Woody Johnson has been saving all this money for this time. He’s giving a lot of money to these players in hopes of turning around a 4-12 season. Don’t get me wrong; I think it’s great that Johnson is showing a lot of trust in Mangini and Tannenbaum but some of these contracts are a little out of this world.

The deal for Damien Woody was for 6 years $31 million. I’m glad to see them get someone on that right side since I wasn’t sold on the idea of grabbing someone in the draft. But now who’s gonna go: Brandon Moore or Anthony Clement… I think it’s Clement.

In regards to Clement… I completely agree with Jake. He was horrendous on that right side so in all seriousness; don’t let the door hit you on the way out.

The biggest question for the offensive line is how quickly can this line gel together. That was the problem last year… they couldn’t play as a solid unit to save their lives.

I like the deal for Calvin Pace… money wise; not to sure but as a player itself, I like the deal. He’s a decent pass rusher which is something that we need. The defense couldn’t get to the quarterback at all. If the Jets can get the pass rush going with Bryan Thomas, Shaun Ellis, and now the addition of Pace. This could be a good defense.

On a side note, there have been conflicting reports about Dwayne Robertson. One local radio station said earlier that he was going to Cincinnati while another said he’s not gone but what I think is that despite have a decent year last season; he like Jonathan Vilma didn’t fit the 3-4 system. This is part of the thing that I don’t like about Mangini; I think that he’s really stubborn when it comes to what he wants on defense. He wants the players to fit his system and not adopting the style of defense to fit the personnel.

Sorry for the side tracking, so now that the Jets got a new linebacker and filled a hole on the right side of the offensive line, where would you like to see the Jets go in the draft?

Pace and Woody on board

March
3

Did anybody tell the other 31 teams that the free agency period started? The Jets have gobbled up every guy on the market. It’s incredible.

Two more guys are on board today. First Calvin Pace, Arizona’s linebacker/defensive end, signed for six years and $42 mil, including $22 mil in guarantees. That’s according to ESPN. Pace played linebacker last season in Arizona’s 3-4 defense, where he put up decent numbers that included 6.5 sacks. Presumably he’d line up outside David Harris and continue to rush the passer, which is still an area of need for the Jets. Pace hasn’t had an amazing NFL career but he’s still young and is considered a guy who still has potential to grow.

The second deal hasn’t been announced yet. It’s rumored the Jets are working out a deal with Lions right tackle Damien Woody. That would essentially lock up their O-line. Right guard would be the only weak position. You can live with that. They could even use a mid- to late-round pick on one. D’Brickashaw can now lean on the other guys a little instead of a 3rd-year guy trying to carry his linemates.

Faneca’s new deal

March
2

Just want to amend the Faneca situation. He ended up agreeing to a five year, $40 million deal instead of the four-year, $32 million reported earlier. The new deal includes $21 million in guarantees. That’s a lot for a 31-year-old with as much mileage as Faneca, who’s been in a ton of playoff games as well. You still can’t argue with the signing. They needed a left guard in the worst way and they got the best guy available.

If they draft a right guard or tackle this line suddenly goes from incompetent to impressive.

Faneca’s a done deal

March
1

Piggy backing off of a comment made on Jake’s post; the deal for Alan Faneca according to his agent as reported just a minute ago on SNY is a done deal for the 4 year 32 mil.

He gives huge stability to that o-line and it’s nice to take away from that line in Pittsburgh. But it also gives stability to the quarterback’s left side… fill in the blank of which QB you want. In your face Frank (inside joke).

Now maybe the right side can get a little stability.

But the question is, what would you do with that right side of the o-line? Keep Brandon Moore and Anthony Clement? Or get someone in the draft?
