Well that was quick.
It didn’t take even 14 hours for the Jets to unload Jonathan Vilma. Today they sent him to New Orleans, who along with Detroit had shown the most interest, for a conditional draft pick. It’s unclear what conditions need to be met, but John Clayton of ESPN is reporting that it could go as high as a third-rounder if he performs well.
I can’t figure out whether Jets fans should be happy about what we got. On one hand, the guy was a franchise player not long ago and could be an excellent middle linebacker again in a 4-3. And he was a first-round pick. On the other hand, he’s coming off season-ending knee surgery and hasn’t even started running again. Maybe we should be happy to get anything for him.
Either way, the David Harris era has officially begun.

It seems like the Jets got fleeced on this one. I’d have rather just held onto him and moved him to an outside linebacker position, where I’m sure he would have filled in quite nicely. It’s like they practically gave him away for a gameshow parting gift or something.
Jon is in rehab after surgery. Doesn’t that set off warning signals to you? They are willing to take a chance and compensation necessarily has to wait until that plays out, or doesn’t. That’s the chance you take and they are taking it!
I’ll grant you that, but operating under the assumption he has passed his physical, I’m anticipating he is on the road to full recovery. It seems to me that if he hits his targets with the Saints, he would have to be worth more than a third round pick and that is my problem with the deal. It’s a “conditional” pick, so if he comes back to full speed, wouldn’t he then be worth a second round pick?
David,
The Jets can obtain a 2nd round pick if Vilma has a “very good year.” Whatever that means is up to interpretation.
Erik, if that’s true, then I have mispoken. I was under the impression it couldn’t be better than a third rounder. The possibility of a second round pick makes it a fair deal in my mind…assuming “very good year” is within the realm of reasonable expectations.
I heard it on espn radio. I’m not sure they completely knew the deal….Still partially in the dark.
