Pete Kendall part Deux????

February
18

Now you all are probably what in the world I’m talking about.

If you all have read the report out of the Newark-Star Ledger then you have a clue of what I’m talking about but for those of you who have no clue, the long of the short of it is that Laveranues Coles is looking for a long term contract despite having two years left on his current deal.

I’ve never claimed to be an expert on how the NFL contracts work but I do know this… if Coles decides to skip the off-season workouts and then it builds to the point where he leaves (yes, I know that this is the worst case but we all saw what happened with Kendall) this is going to be really bad for the Jets.

Coles is a warrior and one of the guttiest wide-outs I’ve ever seen play. He makes the other wide-outs better, and he makes the quarterbacks better. Look at it this way, not many wide-outs would get some of the high balls that Chad Pennington or Kellen Clemens throw.

Give Coles what he wants… he’s earned it. What do you guys think?

I think this is an example of what is wrong with sports journalism. Your writing leaves out a number of points that a knowledgeable and unbiased reporter not trying to stir up the soup would include:

    • Unlike with PK, the Jets have offered to guarantee LC the last two years of his contract. That guarantees him 11 mil even if he doesn’t play a game (e.g., he pulls a Duaner Sanchez). BTW, since the franchise has apparently never done this before, an unbiased reporter might note that this is quite a concession to a non-pro bowl player.

    • That means, being guaranteed 2 more years salary is not enough. How many years salary do you want to guarantee a player who missed time because of a concussion? Do you remember Q or Toon? If LC goes down early this season will you be thrilled if we are paying for him for 3 or 4 more seasons while he cannot play?

    • Coles is a warrior. But he also whines about money. Do you forget he had a contract when we traded for him and he renegotiated that deal for the one he is now unhappy about. Are contracts only supposed to be one way?

    • 11 mil for two years work is not chicken feed. I believe Coles would be paid this year more than Randy Moss made last year. Who was the better receiver? LC is short, cannot stretch the field, and is not the dominating WR like a TO, Moss, or Anquan Boldin or Andre Johnson.

I am sick of this stuff. Read Bob Bullocks piece for an example of the type of stories that should be being written: http://blog.nj.com/jets/2008/02/another_unhappy_jet.html

Coles wants to be paid like he’s going to be a top-15 WR over the next 4-5 years. The facts say that’s just not what he is (or will be).

He’s broken 1,000 yards once in the past 4 years. This year, he was 39th in the league in yards/game (Cotch was 9th, so this isn’t just because we had QB problems). He only had 9 catches over 20 yards (Cotch had 18). He’s 30 years old, and he missed 4+ games this year with a serious injury. If other teams had their choice of any WR to take for the next 5 years, based on age and performance and all the rest, would Coles be in the top 30? 40?

I love Lav’s toughness and leadership as much as the next guy, and guaranteeing $11M seems like a very fair offer to reward those traits and keep him around. For him to be insulted by this offer is beyond me.

Totally agree with Harlan, couldn’t say it any better.
But poor Coles needs to support his 8 million dollar 21 acres, 25,000 sq foot mansion in Florida

I think the jets should keep chad pennington and the receiving core that they ahve around him. He is a smart quaterback and can mange the game well, yes arm strength is an issue, but he can get the job done. Chad is the one that can bring the jets to the playoffs and give them the best chamce to win a championship. Give him one more chance to prove himself, he deserves it.

We should all know by now the NFL is a cutthroat business. Coles left the Jets for the payroll of Daniel Snyder and complained it was the Jets fault. When we traded Moss to get him back he held up the deal for what? A new contract. We gave it to him. He’s made his money. Have you noticed the concussions he’s been having? Think Wayne Chrebet. Think Al Toon. He’s probably gonna spend a lot more time on the sidelines due to concussions. I appreciate the warrior he’s been for us, but nows not the time to invest heavily in a receiver on the down side of his career. Go get Berriman. With Coles lets not make the same Pete Kendall mistake. He has to play for what he’s signed for or he has to sit out and NOT get paid. Period.

I love Coles and I hope they work this out in a way that is amicable to be both parties. Having said that, from a business standpoint, it is hard to argue with the logic posed by the other contributors on this thread. I think he is stuck, no matter what, but nobody wants a disgruntled team captain…especially one with the potential to be as ornery as Laveranues.
