Jonathan Vilma update

Any of you who get the emails from the Jets website already know this but for those of you who don’t; the defensive captain Jonathan Vilma has begun his off-season rehabilitation to make his comeback.
If any of you have read the story by Eric Allen on the Jets website; I’m not totally sure if both Mangini and Tannenbaum really sound to keen on getting rid of the guy. And I’m not too sure that they should unless it’s for more draft picks.
I love Vilma… but putting him on the inside in the 3-4 really doesn’t allow him to take advantage of his speed to the outside. I’m thinking that you let David Harris; who was named to the NFL All Rookie team; stay on the inside and let Vilma roam free as an outside linebacker – with the help of Brad Kassell and Eric Barton. That could be a formidable linebacker core.
I don’t know; I could be looking at this in the wrong perspective but I think it would be a good move for the Jets unless they could get some real value for Vilma.

I like the idea of keeping vilma, but the only way i see this possible is if we get someone on the dline who can occupy blockers and keep them off vilma (ala shaun rogers). The biggest knock on vilma is that he cannot shed blockers and he gets taken out of plays when the interior lineman lock onto him, this problem would only be exxagerated at the OLB position where he would need to be even bigger.
I’m more into gymnastics and swimming, but I do enjoy all sports. Still, I’m pretty sure that any football fan with even just a passing knowledge of the game will understand the difference in physical stature between the converted DE-hybrid behemoths in the NFL that roam the outside in a 3-4 and a guy who is about the size of a running back. I thought it was the unwashed masses with the blogs that weren’t real journalists.
Vilma needs a place to be play an we need a QB… I’ve got a brainstorm! What about LG? RT?
Debbie – Umm, how can I put this kindly… That’s dumb.
I’m sure you’re not dumb, but this specific argument you’re making here is really dumb. Vilma has played in a 4-3 his whole life, at MLB, and he’s undersized for THAT position. Furthermore, even if he could magically bulk up 30 pounds and 2 inches, he’d still be a bad fit for a 3-4 OLB, because he’s not a passrusher, he’s a run pursuer.
It’s not going to work. Bite the bullet and deal him now.
Eric…
I see your point; but your last statement nailed mine. He’s a run pursuer. How many times have we seen in run schemes that you have no one (with the major exception being Harris) with the speed to cut off the edge?
That’s what Vilma does.
The only way I’d deal him is for good value in return; other wise I’d keep the guy.
Ok, so we keep vilma and he has a subpar season yet again, becuase his first two years weren’t flukes he just was out of place in the scheme. So he has a subpar season where he obviously will not want to return and we garner 0 in return. What exactly does this do for us? I really think people need to take a step back replace vilmas name with someone else and think the situation over again, because they’re letting their love for vilma and his play in the 43 cloud their judgement on how bad of a fit he is in this system.
I say trade him this year, normally i wuold want a first, but because of the deep draft a high second or mid second is plenty of value.
