Justin McCareins — Are you kidding me?

December
16

Is there any word other than atrocious to describe No. 81’s play today?! He had five catches, but when it came down to it… the guy couldn’t catch a cold in Antartica. The guy serious needs to add the glue to his hands because he missed some real crucial catches. … In the endzone, you have got to make the catch. No two ways about it. If he makes that catch, this is a different ball game, folks. There was that one catch that he had to go up for on third-and-13 in the first half that McCareins should’ve come down with the ball. As my dad said, if he did that then, there probably wouldn’t have been Kelli Washington’s blocked punt.

Now about the rest of the game; it was nice to see Chad Pennington in the game and he did one heck of a job. I give him a lot of credit. “The General,” as my 30-year-old brother has called him for years, came in without having any reps with the first team and played Tom Brady on the scout team and was as accurate as I’ve seen him in a while.

I like how he moved the chains and on the drive that brought the score to 17-10 in the third quarter. I thought that drive was a vintage Pennington drive. Yes he dinks and dunks the ball but it does move the chains as methodical as it is.

He was 25 for 38 for 186 yards with a 77.3 passer rating and even though he had no offensive touchdowns, he threw no picks and in that sloppy mess, there were a couple of chances but in the end, he didn’t throw an interception. He played well and I’ll be honest, I’m very proud of his performance. I would like to know what you all thought of No. 10’s performance.

I know we’re all going to play Monday morning quarterback on Sunday but in all seriousness, did Mangini go to the well one to many times with Brad Smith under center? Absolutely!!!! The option play in the first quarter was cute and it worked (which surprised me), but you can’t keep going to that especially when you’re playing New England. They’re not stupid. “Fool me once, shame on me. Fool me twice, shame on you.” Every time the Jets tried to run that option after the first one, it blew up in their face. When you had Pennington make a good throw on third and about 16, why would you let Smith attempt a pass? It didn’t even land in the vicinity of a receiver.

I do understand the Jets going for it on fourth downm but I do think that when you get into the red zone, you need at least come away with three points and maybe you could explain why they wouldn’t let Mike Nugent kick a field goal? I know he missed one at the end but still; he has shown a knack for finishing the season strong.

I give the Jets defense a lot of credit for their play today. They kept the most dynamic offense in the NFL to 10 offensive points. For a team that averages 38 points a game, that entire defensive unit played well despite the fact that they only sacked Brady once.

The Jets played a heck of a game and kept it closer than most of the country thought they would. It wasn’t the new Boston Massacre, but they had opportunities to change the outcome of this game, bottom line.

Next up: Tennessee, and Mr. “You Play to Win the Game” Herman Edwards and Kansas City. And on the line for the Jets, what draft pick will they have? Pick No. 2, 3, 4 or 5?

I think it’s fool me once shame on you. fool me twice shame on me.

Was very upset with Jmac and, as many noted in earlier thread, Mangini & co. What were they thinking with the Smith trickery early in the game? Thank God they finally came to their sense, but as usual, coaching cost us as much as anything else.

  3. BigEd

Think we will win the last two, defense is playing the way they should. So when it comes to draft pick. We may not be in the top 5. Sorry to lose Chris Long.

If this was the only game that’d be one thing. But Justin has done this all year. He’s got the worse hands I’ve ever seen. Remember game 2 vs. Baltimore? He was beyond atrocious today. How about the punt that he didn’t down at the one. Its a great example of what they need on offense a 3rd receiver who is a playmaker, who has hands, who can be a starter if a guy goes down and can eventually take over for Coles when he’s gone.

Lot of needs on this team, but it all starts with the O Line. Want to see Bender get some reps, either at Guard or RT, the position for which he was drafted. Why keep sending QB killer Clarke out there? Boy Montgomery and A Jones must be terrible if this guy is the best they have.

Need to fix the O Line first and formost. SIGN FANECA, whatever the cost. Can’t beleive I am writing this but draft Jake Long, if he is there, move Brick to RT.

Need a big wideout, either through free agency or find one in the draft with the high second round pick.

Enough of these talented project undrafted free agent types. Brad Smith is not going to make it at WR, sad to say. Perhaps time to try him on defense?

Coles will be “day to day” the rest of his career, and Cotch is Wes Welker reincarnated, a top flight possession reciever, but not a number one.

McC is gone, why do they keep throwing him out there? Can we take a look at the 5 young wideouts on the roster, PLEASE? Can’t be any worse than Justin.

I know they were helped by the weather, but thought they had a great defensive scheme and overall the D has improved since the bye (and since Vilma got hurt).

Need a pass rush, but right now the offense is more broken than the defense.

Yes, Chad was terrific, should have had the TD to Justin, and if Baker doesnt fumble there were more points to be had.

Not sure what to do now. Draft a QB? Have we seen enough of Kellen? Shown me nothing so far. Right now closer to Browning Nagle than Ken OBrien. How much of it is the O Line’s fault, or the conservative play calling?

Tough call all around, not going to get there in one year.

OK J*E*T*S fans Here we go again. Have we seen enough of Kellen to let Chad go at the end of the season. Will the J*E*T*S release him without an NFL caliber QB on the roster. Unfortunately there are only about a dozen top notch QBs in the entire league. The talent is so slim that no teams will be letting quality back-ups get away. Now on to the NE Patriots undefeated season. As a J*E*T*S fan there are two teams in the NFL that I hate. The Pats and the Dolphins. However I am now rooting for the Pats to go undefeated. Why you ask ? As a sports fans you only get to see greatness a few time in your life. I got to see Jackie Robinson play and steal home plate against the NY Giants, I saw Don Larsens Perfect game. I saw Cassius Clay fight as an amateur. Saw Mays, Mantle, Snider, Ted Williams, Sandy Koufax, Jim Brown, Bill Russells Boston Celtics and the 17-0 Miami Dolphins. You may never get to see a team go undefeated. This may be some sports fans only vision of greatness. Just think about that when you root against the hated Pats.

I disagree about Smith at WR.
He’s never gotten a chance to focus on WR… he practices with the WRs, QBs, RBs, and STs. That’s too much for most players, let alone a youngun.
Let him focus on WR, THEN, you add the other stuff.

Chad was Chad. Give him an OL, some kind of a running game, and an OC, that actually tries to exploit opponents’ weaknesses, and he’ll win games. One by-product of Chad’s performance – - he raised his value, should we trade him.

I’m not as down on KC. He’s been playing handicapped, with a weak OL, running game, and OC. The bottomline on KC, is he needs to improve his accuracy. He’s shown he can ove the team effectively, especially in crunch time.
I put his regression, on Schott, who I think is an atrocious
OC. I thought so last season, too.
You’ll notice how the D coaching staff, has made adjustments… same weak line, same players, but they’ve stepped up, and the D is playing better.
    On offense… nothing.
Let’s hope that some team still thinks Schott is head-coaching material, and takes him.
As a side-note, I think that yesterday’s game, shows the team is on the right track, with Mangini.
The attitude is there. The players are behind him, despite this ugly season… and they play hard, competitive football, most weeks. Add some talent, and we may have a team here.

on defense, the jets are playing well together, and playing solid team defense. you can be effective playing solid team defense, but on offense, you really need “difference makers” that don’t drop passes in the endzone. right now, the jets have very few of them on offense.

other than the fumble, chris baker had a really solid game.

The good thing about how the jets are playing the last 4-5 games, is that with the strides they’re making, adding a few key pieces in the offseason, could potentially make a big difference in us winning these close games.

we need veterans on the offensive line, a star WR, and a Star pass rusher.

Burf , I disagree with you on Clemens. He does not seem to have the brains of a top qb. That is an aspect of Chad’s game that was evident from the first time he took the field for the Jets, replacing VT. I am not saying he is dumb—just not a difference maker like Chad is when he changes the play at the line of scrimmage to adapt to the defense. Given our weak OL, a Jet qb needs to be more creative and a better reader of defenses than qbs on other teams.

I am not arguing for Chad. His arm weakness can hurt us badly. He should have had one of his passes picked for a pick-6, but the cb could not hold on. His lack of arm strength hurts him on the side line pass when it is not a timing pass.

However, I do think both qb’s would be better if there was a line that could open a running attack and give a little more time to pass.

Btw,what happened to Chansi Stuckey ? How bad was this foot injury ? Is he lost forever ?

  10. Bernie

Wow, I could not disagree more with these people saying the offense is in worse shape than the defense. Are you kidding me? Don’t let yesterday’s game in the slop fool you. If the weather was nice, Brady would’ve massacred us. We have absolutely no pass rush to speak of. The only time we sniff a QB is when we blitz a DB. Give me a break, we have the worst D-line in football, period. And could it have been any easier for Maroney to run yesterday? If we go into next year without addressing this d-line, we will get the same results. I mean, I agree that we also need to fortify the o-line (especially the right side) but defense wins championships and we have not had a dominant defense in decades – not since the Sack Exchange of my childhood. Please please please Tannenbaum, don’t ignore this d-line like you did last year (Kenyon Coleman for $20 million was the only upgrade – and it showed all year).

I’m a guy who favors trading a high draft pick for multiple ones in order to build up the lines, especially for a rebuilding team. But there are very few quarterbacks that come along that have the ability to be elite, and if you pass one over you will never, ever forget it. Matt Ryan might be one of those guys. If you watched a couple of BC’s games on tv this year, he’s a special player. A little bit prone to tunnel vision at times, but his deep ball is as accurate as any I’ve ever seen, he’s surprisingly mobile in the pocket, and he’s some kind of leader. He played most of his junior season with a broken foot and still won 1st-team all-ACC. If he had played on Florida instead of Tim Tebow, I have no doubt he’d have a heisman trophy in his house right now. He’s ready to start in the NFL today.

  12. Wayne

I watched Matt Ryan play two games all year, both against tough opponents, and he melted down the stretch of both of them.

The Heisman voters were searching far and wide for another candidate before reluctantly voting for a SO.

If Ryan were the goods he would would have won hands down in a horrible year for offensive division one players.

He will likely be there in round two anyway, no need to waste a top 5 pick on him.

He is this year’s Brady Quinn, will drop like a stone.

  13. David

The phrase “tunnel vision” scares the crap out of me. In the NFL, tunnel vision is almost always a precursor to a feeding frenzy, in the opponent’s secondary.
