R. Washington waived

November
6

This just in from the Jets.

November 6, 2007—The New York Jets have waived safety Rashad Washington. The announcement was made by Jets General Manager Mike Tannenbaum.

Washington (6-1, 217, Kansas State) was selected by the Jets in the seventh round (236th overall) of the 2004 NFL Draft.  In four seasons, he played in 48 games and tallied 69 special teams tackles, 22 defensive tackles, 1.5 sacks and one pass defensed.  He recorded 10 special teams tackles in nine games this season.

For a time, Washington was a very valuable special teams player. In fact, when I polled the locker room last season, he was most constantly cited as the player most likely to make a big play on special teams. But he was awful against the Redskins with two penalties (going on memory here as I try and race out the door to Hofstra) and he also was  clobbered on the Redskins’ successful onsides kick.

No disrespect to Washington but, finally, some signs of life from coach Eric Mangini and GM Mike Tannenbaum. Too often, they’ve threatened changes and, Clemens for Pennington notwithstanding, most of them have been cosmetic. This move, though seemingly minor, might actually get some players’ attention in the locker room.

It was two penalties: An illegal block on a punt return in the fourth quarter, and offensive holding on the opening kickoff in overtime. Who knows whether the Jets would have scored in overtime without the ten yard penalty… I’m glad Mangini is making personnel moves like this, but in the end this is really cosmetic as well. Abandoning the 3-4 when he doesn’t have the talent would be a big move, for example.

I think I remember some other costly penalties in a few of the previous games. Its too bad, he was often the first guy down field on kicks last year.

I hear the Vikings are looking for a QB. Do they have any decent starters on OL or DL? Could we trade Chad for a starting NT or DE?

Vikes play a 4-3 so its unlikely there would be a really good fit, but you never know… Chris Long, first round draft pick, NYJ…

Greg, trading deadline has passed. Vikes will start Bollinger this week!

I proposed this trade four weeks ago, of course the front office did not listen to me :)

Too late now, will get nothing for Chad.

He will be released this off season when his big bonus comes due, and will likely start the 2008 season for the Vikes, Chiefs, or someone else.

Certainly a nice fit with the Vikes, great offensive line and running back, and a very solid defense. Chad could be the missing link.

Is it too early to talk about the draft?

No, absolutely not… Chris Long. No NT worth taking top-5 other than Dorsey who is 300 lbs…

The Jets have significant needs at many positions. Better to trade a top 3 pick for a basket of picks. You get more talent and its friendlier to the cap.

Just remember that Cotchery, Coles, B Smith and L.Washington were not first round picks, whereas B Thomas and Ferguson(4th overall) were.

I’m agreeing with Greg, Jets glaring needs are run stoppers “D” and run blockers “O”. Multiple 1st and 2nd round picks could make this happen…

at least one of those penalties was bullcrap he hit the other player in the shoulder but was called for hitting in the back
