Coles concussed

For anybody who saw Bills cornerback Terrence McGee hit Laveranues Coles from behind, causing the Jets wide receiver’s helmet to slam into the Giants Stadium turf at great speed and without anything to check his fall, this should come as no surprise.
Honestly, the surprise was the seemingly-indestructible Coles was in sweats for today’s practice, not taking part in the session. If anybody can recover quickly, it’s Coles, but, at this point, his streak of 104 straight starts – the longest for an NFL receiver – and 107 consecutive games is in serious jeopardy.
Coles, for two major reasons, hasn’t been as chipper this week. But he is dealing with a concussion and the fact that Chad Pennington, his very good friend, was benched. Coles repeated today that he was cool with the move as long as Pennington was. But he didn’t give us any inkling of whether that meant Pennington was cool with what went down.
Coles also became agitated when a reporter persisted in asking him about the injury. Mangini does prevent his players from talking about their injuries but, in other weeks, Coles might not have snapped as quickly.
Coles also declined to participate in a conference call with the Redskins’ beat reporters. This could be because of the injury and the way Coles feels or because he doesn’t want to answer questions about his old team.
In other practice news, my boy Mike DeVito looks like he injured his right shoulder or arm in a tackling drill. Fullback Darian Barnes lowered a helmet into DeVito, the grandson of late Suffern coach Ralph Consiglio, and DeVito immediately walked to the sidelines for medical attention. He rejoined the other defensive linemen but just walked through the drills and did not do any more hitting, at least not in the 30 minutes of practice the media was allowed to watch.
DeVito, an undrafted free agent out of Maine, was on the 45-man active roster for the first time this past Sunday, making his NFL debut in the second quarter of a 13-3 loss to the Bills.
Also from practice today, Darrelle Revis was fielding punts as Leon Washington had trouble handling some of Ben Graham’s boots into the sun.

I love Coles, but hope he doesn’t play this Sunday.
I’ve seen enough of what happens, with multiple concussions, and if I recall, Coles had one last season.
I’m happy to hear that Revis is taking some punts.
Leon hasn’t looked as good on punts, and I also think that it’s had an effect on his running back duties. It could be just the playcalling, but Leon’s not as effective this season, when he comes in to spell TJ.
Agree that Coles should not start this weekend. Everyone knows what a tough, tough player he is, but with it being a meaningless game, he should sit. If someone had more sense with Wayne he would still be playing… Dont want to see that happen with LC
LC will be smarter than Wayne. He will quit before there are permanent effects. I fear that it will be sooner rather than later. I predict that he retires before the end of next season, perhaps even at the end of this season.
i hope laverneus is ok. he is one of my most favorite players. i do not want to see him leave football like al toon—another favorite who has post-concussion syndrome. hey andrew you should call al toon and find out how is doing.
Coles is a warrior so he made need to be protected from himself. The only legitamate pro bowl candidate on this underachieving team, he will be sorely missed, but he should sit this week and the week after the bye at a minimum.
This ship be sinking, with or without him, no need for heroics.
I hope this does not result in his premature retirement, but since he has two known concussions and probably more undisclosed, it may very well be that he is nearing the end of his career.
Dangerous sport.
As far as effect on the field, Clemens has good chemistry with Mc Carreins, so the door should be opened on the dog house, but Justin should remain on a short leash. At the first sigh of the dropsies he should be whistled back into his house and the door locked behind him.
If it gives KC some comfort to have JM on the field to begin his run as starting QB of the NYJ, I understand, but a real effort should be made during he remainder of the season to get Brad Smith significant time at wideout. And Wallace Wright too.
HOW MANY TIMES HAVE WE SEEN OUR RECIEVERS STRUNG OUT TO DRY,BY HIGH/FLOATING PASSES THIS YEAR???WHEN CLEMMENS THROWS THE BALL,IT MAY BE A BULLET,AND HARD TO CATCH,BUT HE IS RARELY GOING TO STRING A RECIEVERS OUT TO DRY,TO GET SMACKED IN THE MOUTH BY A HUNGRY DB…OR CONCUSSED…THIS MAY HAVE ALSO PLAYED A ROLE IN THE BENCHING OF PENNINGTON.
