As mentioned yesterday, safety Erik Coleman does indeed have a “concussion.”:http://www.lohud.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20071004/SPORTS01/710040440
While there’s nothing definite on his status for Sunday’s game against the Giants, don’t count on him playing. He’s missed practice today and yesterday and that’s usually a good indication, at least on the Jets it is, that a player will be sidelined on Sunday.
We chatted with second-year pro Eric Smith today, who gave us short, clipped answers about his training camp injury and his improvement and ball-hawking skills. Turns out, he seemed a little in the dark about Coleman’s injury. Either that, or Smith is a bit of an actor but I think it’s more of the former.
Then again, Eric Mangini admitted it had been a clerical error to list Coleman as having a head injury in yesterday’s player participation report. The cynic might suggest a clerical error discovered when the NFL told the Jets to clarify things. Then again, who wants to be cynical on such a nice day.

Certainly not at the expense of a concussion to E Coleman, but I would like to see more of Eric Smith on the field. I was looking forward to him maybe having an expanded role with the good camp he was having until the injury. I think he has the speed and the ability to tackle, we need that this week.
