Coleman misses practice

Eric Smith, your time may have come.
Safety Erik Coleman missed practice today with what the Jets are listing as a head problem. Typically, that’s a euphemism for a concussion or concussion symptoms, not uncommon in the NFL.
However, it probably puts Coleman’s status for Sunday’s game against the Giants in doubt.
Mainly as a by-product of the Jets’ problems in the front seven, but also indicative of his solid play this season, Coleman leads the team with 35 tackles and his absence would be felt against the Giants, who have three strong receiving weapons in Plaxico Burress, Amani Toomer and TE Jeremy Shockey.
Smith, a second-year pro, had a good training camp before being sidelined with a thigh injury that still leaves him limited in practice. But he might make a nice addition to the Jets’ secondary against the Giants because he’s got size and strength over Coleman, useful against the likes of Burress.
Here’s the full participation report:
Jets – S Erik Coleman (head) did not participate; CB Andre Dyson (foot), QB Chad Pennington (ankle), NT Dewayne Robertson (knee) and S Eric Smith (thigh) were limited; FB Darian Barnes (shoulder), CB David Barrett (thigh), LB David Bowens (hand), WR Jerricho Cotchery (shoulder), RB Thomas Jones (calf), TE Joe Kowalewski (shoulder) and RG Brandon Moore (shoulder) had full participation.
Giants – Check Ernie’s blog (just kidding, but not really).
WR Steve Smith (scapula) is out; WR Plaxico Burress (ankle), DE Michael Strahan (knee) and S Gibril Wilson (hip) did not participate; G Chris Snee (knee) and RB Derrick Ward (ankle) were limited; RB Brandon Jacobs (knee) had full participation.

Andrew, no offense to Kowalewski, but Darian Barnes better be active this week and I think we really need to get down to some smashmouth football and let Thomas Jones get 25 touches. All of the cutsie things we have bee doing with the screens and the delayed draw plays have to stop and we have to go out there and punish the Giants defense and keep Strahan and Ummyenora out of the backfield and chasing down our backs!
I like Frank’s prescription…but I would still like to see them come out and open up the first offensive series with a play action shot up the field (deeper than 20 yards). I can’t imagine anyone could expect it.
How come the Jets never let Chad roll to his right ? He can make good decisions while he rolls. It would catch an over eager defense off guard.
Andrew,
Where’d you come up with those numbers?
Solo Assisted Combined
Revis 24 6 30
E. Coleman 11 18 29
Barrett 26 2 28
K. Coleman 23 5 28
Vilma 9 19 28
CV,
It’s out of the game notes for this week and based on the coaches’ tapes.
Well it’s inaccurate. The only way Erik Coleman leads the team in tackles is if you’re adding in Drew, Kenyon and MARCUS.
[...] Coleman’s injury, according to Andrew Gross could be a sign that he suffered a concussion last week. This might be our chance to see what Eric Smith can do consistently against first [...]
