Halftime: Ravens 17, Jets 3

September
16

Score aside, there have been some positive signs for the Jets in the first half.

Kellen Clemens has looked in control, though he would have had a much better first half had he not overthrown Justin McCareins on that deep route. Clemens has shown poise and played fast, running the no huddle, going with an empty backfield and throwing out of the shotgun.

The Ravens have two sacks but they can’t really be blamed on the offensive line too much. Trevor Pryce really caught Clemens on a coverage sack after Clemens held onto the ball too long. And cornerback Corey Ivy came untouched on a blitz past tight end Chris Baker, who was standing straight up and went right into his pass pattern.

Thomas Jones has shown signs of life, though the holes aren’t consistently there for him.

And the defensive line, particularly Dewayne Robertson, has been aggressive.

In fact, if there’s anything that can be said about the Jets’ defense is they’re being beaten because they’re too aggressive. In an effort to get pressure on Kyle Boller, the defense is playing tight in the box and bringing some blitzes from the secondary. It’s fine when it works but, on plays like Willis McGahee’s touchdown pass, the Jets came on an angle from both ends toward the middle and Boller was able to play action and roll out to his right, where he found McGahee wide open in the end zone. Linebacker Bryan Thomas was sort of left out in space on the left edge. He had to make a choice between dropping back to cover McGahee, which would have allowed Boller to walk in for the score, or put pressure on Boller. He put pressure on Boller, who immediately dumped off to McGahee.

At the end of the half, the Jets got hurt by the fact that there are two giant TV screens at either end of this stadium because everybody in the stadium, Ravens players, officials, the Jets, the media, saw that Todd Heap had dragged both feet inbounds. They had to review the play.

Please continue to comment and vent, if you like. I’ll be typing up a storm in the second half writing – these 4:15 games actually wind up being tough on deadline since we don’t get back from the locker room until 8:30 or so to start writing.

I’ll check back later.

Very little pressure on Boller. Thomas looks like a guy who only plays well in contract years

A positive, and I may be jinxing things, but they have held willis in check

Andrew, do you think clemens should get another shot next week even if chad is healthy

  4. Spiderpig

A lot of unfortunate drops by the receivers. Jets definitely could have won that game, or at least tied it with little time left in regulation. The soft hands just weren’t there sometimes, including the onside kick attempt.

I thought the offense, was too conservative today.
We don’t have the OL, or defense, to play conservative ball.

Once we started actually attacking the Ravens, they started making mistakes.

I know many think Clemens should be the starter, but not me.
Chad still give us the best shot to win. QBing isn’t only about an arm. While Clemens showed he can lead the team, it’s Chad that can read the defenses.
    Next season, is another story.

I like McCareins as a person, but it’s time he goes bye-bye.
You can’t afford to keep a player, that too often gulps in the clutch.

They win yesterday if Chad plays.

  8. burf

Agreed, Wayne… providing Chad was healthy.

    And where was Leon Washington???
    Brad Smith?

We have to attack defenses, and get the ball into playmakers’ hands. That’s the only way we can overcome, the weak OL.
And the 4th-quarter yesterday, kind of highlighted that.

I know it is sort of an apparition since the other teams are usually in prevent, but when they really seem to be a much better offense in the no huddle spread formation.

Would love them to play an entire game just once in that formation, play a wide open attacking through the air style, a la the Colts or Rams. See what happens, right now it is clear the status quo is not working.

  10. Paul

I love the Jets. You never know. You just never know how they will play. It certainly makes it exciting.

Guys, how much fun is it to see a guy like Cotchery develop into one of the fines receivers in the league…we are very fortunate in that regards…I wish it was him who had the chance to score on the ball JMac dropped…we would have gone to OT if that was the case…This team showed a lot of heart and character…hopefully they can get up on the Dolphins early and play with a lead!!

  12. wayne

I would have taken Wallace Wright over McCarreins in that spot!

    Now for the good news.

As of tomorrow the Jets remaining opponents are off to a terrific 11-17 start, .393 winning percentage.

So much for the tough schedule :o )
