Minicamp, Day 2

No news on the Pete Kendall front, though, to be honest, the next bit of news will almost surely be that the Jets have released the veteran left guard.

Kendall, asked if there had been any progress after he ripped the organization that has not been done since Eric Mangini and Mike Tannenbaum took over, replied, “None on my end.’’ Kendall reported no repercussions against him for speaking out.

“I don’t think telling the truth is that type of conduct,’’ Kendall said.

Meanwhile, while Tannenbaum said he would not discuss contract negotiations publicly, there was an anonymous report that made the rounds last night that Kendall had been given the option of signing a one-year contract prior to 2006 and that, further, the Jets had given him the option of trying to land a better deal elsewhere.

Upon hearing that, Kendall’s agent, Neil Schwartz was nearly apoplectic, saying there was not a shred of truth to it.

This whole situation started over money and, most likely, could be ended by money. But it has taken on a personal edge to it and if you think the Jets were seething after Kendall spoke out yesterday (which they most certainly were), the team is likely to be livid if/when Kendall talks after he is released.

However, the bottom line is this: for all of Kendall’s solid play last season, and the direction he gave to LT D’Brickashaw Ferguson and C Nick Mangold, who is particularly attached to Kendall as a mentor, the Jets don’t view losing Kendall as that big a loss. Ex-Eagle Adrien Clarke may not be a long-term solution, if he does win the job over Matt Mcchesney or Wade Smith or whoever the team might bring in, but the Jets don’t see it as a huge step down.

Kendall again spent plenty of time with the second team at the morning practice, though he was with the first team for the two-minute drill at the end.

In other camp happenings…

CB Andre Dyson cut in front of WR Wallace Wright to make a nice interception of a Chad Pennington throw. First-rounder Darrelle Revis similarly cut into a route and nearly made a diving interception off Kellen Clemens.

And that familiar face standing in the backfield with the other coaches during 11-on-11s was Curtis Martin. Really, the only question is who becomes an ex-Jet first, Martin by retiring or Kendall by being released. My money’s on Martin.

Not that he’s ready to be fitted for a whistle.

“I don’t think he’s headed into coaching any time soon,’’ Mangini said. “I appreciate the insight. It wasn’t a big coaching day for Curtis. I don’t know what those guys necessarily got today.’’

Safety Kerry Rhodes missed his second straight day in the minicamp, again for personal reasons. Mangini said it was not a health or injury issue.

Mangini invited a group of soldiers based in Fort Bragg to attend practice. Most of them have seen action overseas, many in Iraq or Kosovo. Some of done multiple tours of duty.

“They’re really the reason we get to do what we get to do, because of the sacrifices they make,’’ Mangini said.

Hey Andrew. This been some sepeculation that Pennington , a full year away from rehab and with a real offseason of rest would see improvement in arm strength. WHen I wactch old tapes of him he clearly wannt back to where he used to be last year. Do you think his arm is stronger this year then last ?

    Vinny,

Funny you should mention that as I’m sitting here writing a story on Pennington for tomorrow’s newspaper. I can report he does look better, again this is practicing without pads. But his body if not bulked up, looks stronger and he’s throwing with a lot more confidence. Again, you should pluck down 50 cents for tomorrow’s paper, or at least read it online but I’ll be touching on that subject in the space I have.

Hey Pete K you could have signed a one year deal..BUT YOU DIDN’T because you wanted security and now you want to redo the deal..In the court of public opinion..you lose..You signed a contract that no one forced you to sign.Thats the bottom line
