Jets still trimming roster

Just a quick review of the events yesterday in Jets-land and around the NFL:
The team will cut running back Derrick Blaylock and defensive lineman Bobby Hamilton to clear about another $2 million in cap space. Meanwhile, while all reports are that fellow veteran defensive end Kimo von Oelhoffen will be released by Saturday, a source close to the situation told me the exact oppositve yesterday. That not only does von Oelhoffen want to stay with the Jets, the Jets want him to return and not even under a restructured contract.
Anyway, that’s what I was told. Regardless, I still expect otherwise.
The Ravens released veteran running back Jamal Lewis, though Baltimore GM Ozzie Newsome said he hoped the club could re-sign him. Lewis is well past the prime of his career and probably not worth the Jets considering, if he doesn’t go back to the Ravens.
The Texans released veteran receiver Eric Moulds, who also seems like he’s on the downside of his career.
The Vikings released veteran quarterback Brad Johnson and, depending on what his price would be, I’d see that as an upgrade over Patrick Ramsey. However, the Jets most likely want to elevate second-year QB Kellen Clemens to the No. 2 role and there’s no way Johnson accepts being a No. 3.
Also, Dr. Elliot Pellman, the Jets medical director and team internist, has stepped down from his position as director of the NFL’s concussion committee. There’s been a significant backlash against Dr. Pellman’s perceived lack of aggressiveness toward concussion safety. The NFL did announce Dr. Pellman would remain on the committee.
Sorry I didn’t get to this stuff earlier but I covered four high school playoff games at the Westchester County Center where, as I explained in a previous post, I do not have interet access for my laptop.
I’m not scheduled to be there today so hopefully I can stay a little more on top of things.
And, in case you missed the editing in my previous post, our NFL free agency preview package will run in Friday’s edition, not today’s. However, and stop me if you’ve heard this one, there will hopefully be a poll posted on this blog later today.

I’m surprised about KVO. His release would give the Jets even more flexibility.
There are some nice QBs out there who might be available (Carr, Green, and B. Johnson to name a few) who would be excellent backups, but I doubt the Jets would go for any of them. My guess is they elevate Clemens to #2 and grab a #3 somewhere.
Andrew: Any idea if the Jets started working on extensions for Cotchery and Rhodes?
Cotchery – yes, ``preliminary’’ discussions as per GM Mike Tannenbaum.
Rhodes – can’t say with 100 percent accuracy but after talking with Tannenbaum, I believe it’s no, for now. They’ve got a little more time with Kerry so I think the Jets want to get through free agency and the draft first but Tannenbaum understands it’s a necessity. If I have my facts straight, Rhodes is signed through 2008 so they could wait until this time next year, though Tannenbaum obviously realizes the Jets would be wise not to do anything to risk losing the emerging Pro Bowler.
Cool, thanks for the info! If Rhodes has 2 more years, then the Jets can afford to wait a little longer. Bigger issues at hand. But I know Cotchery is a FA next year, so he’s high priority now.
The new concussion co-chair, David Viano is a biomechnical reseacher from Wayne state. They were the pioneers in forwarding a theory based in orthopedics and developed by Notre Dame team dentist Dr. Jack Stenger. Stenger’s theory was the basis of the first story,”NFL won’t bite”, Peter Keating reported on that led to this multilevel story. The N.E.Patriots have the lowest concussion rate in the NFL, click on the “NLF won’t bite” link on the “”Dr. Yes” page to find out more or go to http://www.mahercor.com Thanks to Peter Keating for his efforts and intuition in investigating this story. Parents, coaches, trainers even the U.S. Military should have this basic orthopedic information.
[...] As far as Hamilton, it seems to be a move that prohibits the Jets from releasing Kimo von Oelhoffen … or at least the to relegate him into a backup role on money that would otherwise be burned. After the report the other day about Kimo’s imminent departure it’s hard to know what to expect. Andrew Gross addresses this on Jets Journal by writing [...]
What dedication! I know I’m at the best Jets’ blog when I see that Andrew posted this one at 2:14 a.m. and then posted a response by 9:15 a.m.! Don’t you ever sleep?! You bleed green, as do the rest of us who come here. Just don’t wear yourself out. And—thanks.
