Taking a peek

The Jets offered the media in attendance today a slight look behind the curtains. Hey, something is better than nothing.

It’s been “well documented”:http://www.thejournalnews.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20061117/SPORTS01/611170400/1034/SPORTS that coach Eric Mangini likes using old boxing videos to motivate his team the night before a game.

Saturday, before a 26-13 win at Minnesota, he showed them champion Aaron “The Hawk’’ Pryor’s six-round knockout over Gaetan Hart in a 1980 junior welterweight title bout. But there was a twist to this one.

Pryor’s wife read about Mangini’s practice of showing fights to the Jets and that he had already shown one of Pryor’s bouts. When Pryor learned of this, he contacted the Jets and said he wanted to send a personal message. The Jets sent him a cap and sweatshirt and he sent back a tape imploring the Jets to take it to the Vikings like he “took it to Gaetan Hart.’’

Pryor’s trademark saying was, “It’s Hawk time.’’ In the video, he says that once and then, near the end, asks, “What time is it? It’s the Jets’ time.’’

Mangini, unsolicited, talked about sending Pryor and his wife game balls off the victory. After his press conference was over, he authorized the Jets P.R. staff to show the video – the fight and the motivational message – to the media.

Elsewhere, here’s what you need to know before tonight’s Colts-Bengals game.

Every scenario above requires a Jet loss, do they control their own destiny? I think they do.

You are right, it reverts to head to head, verified at NFL.com so Jets do not yet control own destiny. I am still rooting to win the division though.
