Jolley farewell

The signs that tight end Doug Jolley was not among coach Eric Mangini’s favorites became very clear Monday when Mangini blasted Jolley’s unsportsmanlike conduct penalty against the Giants – he head-butted Sam Madison on the sidelines after making a two-yard catch on third down, falling one yard short of the first-down marker.
So no surprise today when the Jets dealt Jolley, acquired from Oakland prior to the 2005 season for a first-round pick, to Tampa Bay for an undisclosed draft pick.
“The frustrating thing from the other night, and we talked about this extensively and it’s really unacceptable, was the personal foul on the sideline,’’ Mangini said Monday. “If you want to make a statement, then you make a statement when the ball is in play. I don’t condone those actions, I think that’s selfish and hurts the team. He has done some really positive things and he had the hiccup the other night that we talked about.’Though Jolley’s 29 catches for 324 yards and one touchdown last season fall neatly within his career parameters – 409 yards and two touchdowns on 32 catches as a rookie in 2002 all represent career highs – he was still a disappointment in his one season with the Jets.
The move also comes a day after Mangini praised tight end Chris Baker’s progress in camp.
Interestingly, the Jets also announced today they had acquired tight end Sean Ryan from the Dallas Cowboys for an undisclosed draft pick. The 6-foot-5, 265-pound third-year veteran was a fifth-round pick out of Boston College in 2004 and played in just nine NFL games. Still, the fact that the Jets gave up a draft pick for him is probably not good news for second-year pro Joel Dreessen, who along with Baker and Jolley were the only tight ends with a reception for the Jets last season.
In another transaction today, the Jets claimed wide receiver Sloan Thomas off waivers from Tennessee (perhaps a shrewd move going into the Sept. 10 opener against the Titans if Thomas can help them with the playbook). Thomas was a seventh-round pick out of Texas in 2004 and he played just one game in 2005, making two special teams tackles.

Can anyone say Heath Miller! The Jolley fiasco is over but the pain is still there! Add that to our second round kicker that can’t put it in the endzone on kickoffs. Thanks Terry!!
