Morning, Jets fans. And welcome.
More importantly, thank you for checking in.
While it’s my name on this blog, consider this a 50-50 proposition. You, the reader, have just as much say regarding content as I do. The whole point is to encourage dialog, feedback, reaction. My job may be to report on the Jets, but your opinion on the team is just as valid.
So before jumping into the Jets season, let’s go through a blog minicamp as a sort of review.
The Jets have been in training camp for a little more than a week; yesterday marked their 13th practice in 10 days. Today will be my 11th day on the beat, having been re-assigned after three-plus years covering the Rangers. Needless to say, I’m undergoing a crash course in covering the NFL.
The early indications are I will love doing this job as much as I enjoyed covering the NHL.
Not that there aren’t differences.
Media access, for one.
Without implying all NHL beats are without friction, or that reporters develop improper buddy-buddy relationships with the coaches and players, the reporter-player/coach relationship is much more low-key in the NHL. To be frank, it’s much more personal. You get to know the players and coaches as people, not just sources.
I’m sure, over time, I will develop good relationships with Jet players and coaches. It just will take some time.
Our only access to first-year coach Eric Mangini is at his daily press conference. There’s no one-on-one “face’’ time for any of the beat reporters. During training camp, we’re only allowed to talk to the players as they run off the field from practice, when they’re hot, sweaty and tired. The players’ quotes are also closely monitored so they’ve been fairly tight-lipped so far, not wanting to get in trouble with the new coaching staff. The assistant coaches are off-limits and, so far, we haven’t been able to chat with either offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer or defensive coordinator Bob Sutton.
Not that I’m complaining. I’m still getting paid to do what I dreamed of doing as a kid. Being granted access to professional teams such as the Jets and Rangers that is denied to most fans is a privilege I don’t take lightly.
It’s my responsibility to let you share in my good fortune.
It’s your responsibility to tell me what you want to know.
Also, please check out LoHud’s new Giants blog, orchestrated by beat writer Ernie Palladino, who brings the insight of nearly two decades of covering the NFL. Plus, he’s an incredibly snappy dresser.
